This study pursues two objectives: firstly the systematische (systematic) reconstruction of the basic structure of Hegel‹s epistemology and Philosophy of Mind based on the writings of the »mature system,» in particular the ‹Wissenschaft der Logik‹ (Science of Logic) and the ‹Enzyklopädie‹ (Encyclopedia), and secondly the beginning of a reciprocally fruitful dialogue between Hegel and current analytic philosophy in the debates on realism/anti-realism, theory of truth, externalism/internalism and the structure of cognitive systems. The author shows that what is at the center of Hegel‹s Philosophy of Mind is a holistic, anti-modular theory of mind, at the center of his epistemology is an anti-skeptical, anti-representationalist, direct realism.

This 1572 edition of the ›Dialecticae libri duo‹ is the last and most influentical of Petrus Ramus (Peter Ramus) works. In the tradition of Agricola, it provides an introduction to the Ciceronian topos and reflects on the extent to which systematic instructions for reaching a judgment are possible. Drawing on the literary classics (Virgil, Ovid und Cicero), it is a stylistic sign of the dissociation from the Scholastic tradition. Although Ramus does deal with formal elements of Aristotelian logic, he does so with a special method which allowed Ramism to become the the counter-concept to Aristotelian Scholastic philosophy in the 16th and 17th century. This edition makes this pivotal text of Ramism available once again, along with a new translation and introduction.

›Subreption and Dialectic in Kant‹ has two goals. In the first place, it traces the history of the concept of subreption up to the philosophy of Kant. Secondly, it investigates the relation between Kant‹s thesis that there is a dialectic of reason and the doctrine of subreption. – In Roman law, someone commits a subreption when he attains an advantage through the concealment of important facts. In philosophy the concept of subreption is deployed from the time of Jungius and Leibniz (using the Latin term »vitium subreptionis« or »error of subreption« in order to criticize methodical errors in philosophical argumentation. In the first half of the eighteenth century, Christian Wolff applies the concept to errors in the empirical verification of statements. The peak of the development of the concept is Kant‹s Dissertation of 1770, in which the chapter on the method of metaphysics centers on how to avoid the »vitium subreptionis metaphysicum«. In the Transcendental Dialectic of the ›Critique of Pure Reason‹; Kant overlays the critique of subreption with a theory of dialectical reason. Yet reason does not appear to be the source of this dialectic. We are therefore left with subreption – a failure of judgment – as the only way of explaining the errors considered in the Transcendental Dialectic. – This work provides the first investigation of the concept of subreption. At the same time it demonstrates the great importance of the concept for the elaboration of Kant‹s philosophy.

Since the appearance of Volume IV,2, six new lecture transcripts have been discovered, a fact that justifies a chronological break in series IV. Accordingly, this volume includes a transcript by Kasper Lavater of Fichte's first five lectures Concerning the Concept of the Wissenschaftslehre, which were delivered in Lavater's living room in the spring of 1794. Fichte's first lectures on Natural Law [Naturrecht] are documented in a fragmentary transcript from the literary remains of Fichte's student Johann Smidt, who later became a politician in Bremen. Also included in this volume is a rough and unrevised transcript of Fichte's Platner lectures on Logic and Metaphysics from 1796/97, from the papers of Friedrich August Eschen (1776–1800) discovered in Eutin, as well as a fragmentary transcript, from the same source, of the 1796/97 ›Wissenschaftslehre nova methodo‹. The literary remains of the Swedish philosopher Benjamin Karl Henrik Höijer (1767–1812) contains a Swedish transcript of Fichte's Platner lectures from August and September 1798. This transcript is here published for the first time in its entirety, along with a German translation of the same. The primary text included in this volume, however, is the transcript of the 1798/99 ›Wissenschaftslehre nova methodo‹; by Karl Friedrich Krauses (1780–1829); which was discovered in Dresden in 1980. This is a text that dramatically improves our understanding of the second phase of Fichte's pedagogic activity in Jena.

These contemporary references, as well as the manner in which they were reflected in the contemporary reception of Fichte's work, are explicated in detail in the forward to this volume. This volume also includes Fichte's treatise on Machiavelli (1807), as well as a translation of his from Dante.

This study of the history of the origins of the modern concept of addiction in Germany in the late 18th and early 19th century, based on opium and alcohol addictions, can help to clear up some of these difficulties. The principal elements of the modern concept of addiction were established around 1800 when a new body image became popular and physicians started to distinguish between subjective well-being and objective health. The history of addiction, the hidden illness, is also a study of the concept of illness in modern medicine.

In the 19th century, there were a number of attempts to use Hegel‹s aesthetics for research on art history. Heinrich Gustav Hotho was one of the main proponents of this project of linking philosophical foundations and empirical knowledge.
