The comprehensive correspondence in 1786, a year which was very eventful for Jacobi, reflects, apart from private worries, the philosophical disputes. They began with the dispute between Jacobi and the philosophers of the Enlightenment in Berlin and concerned his »Spinoza Letters« and Mendelssohn’s ›An die Freunde Lessings‹; (To the Friends of Lessing), in which he intervened with his advocacy entitled ›Wider Mendelssohn’s Beschuldigungen‹ (Against Mendelssohn’s Accusations). This was followed by the dispute about the allegation of »Jesuitism« and »crypto Catholicism«, made by the Enlightenment philosophers in Berlin, among others, against Jacobi. The correspondence also shows the close contact with Hamann concerning his ›Fliegenden Brief‹ (Flying Letter) as well as the circumstances of Jacobi’s stay in England and the groundwork for his ›David Hume über den Glauben‹ (David Hume on Faith).

The commentary on the third volume of texts shows even more clearly than the letters themselves that Jacobi was attentively following political events which were under the influence of absolutism and criticized the absolute power of the rulers in writings which were published anonymously. In the spring of 1783 he was occupied with Spinoza’s almost forgotten, succinct destruction of traditional metaphysical concepts. In this volume, the correspondence, which caused a sensation at that time, is presented again in its chronological and biographical context, in many cases rendering it comprehensible for the first time. In addition to Wilhelm Heinse‘s brilliant descriptions, the correspondence with Johann Georg Hamann is the core of this edition. The letters of the third volume are carefully annotated, as are the other letters, and indexes of places, subjects and persons make the volume of texts as well as the volume of annotations accessible.

The correspondence of 1785 was influenced mainly by Jacobi’s publication of the »Spinozabriefe« (Spinoza Letters). During this year he corresponded primarily with Johann Georg Hamann, as well as the young theologian Thomas Wizenmann, Princess Gallitzin, Goethe, Herder, Gleim, Forster, Lavater, Kleuker and Soemmerring. More than one quarter of the letters of 1875 had not been published up to now; this includes just under 90 letters. The volume contains an appendix which includes 138 previously unknown letters written between 1764 and 1784 (either handed down or made available), among which is the previously unpublished correspondence with F. K. v. Hompesch (temporarily responsible for finances as a minister of Karl Theodor’s); which document Jacobi’s political activities in Munich, among other things. The volume concludes with a detailed index of persons.

Jacobi’s library was sold to the Prussian state after his death and each individual title was catalogued. Based on this catalogue and an inspection of the books where they are kept today, Konrad Wiedemann {Wiedemann, K.} reconstructed the library and provided the titles with annotations: precise bibliographical descriptions, information on their current locations and notes on their literary treatment. The catalogue provides bibliographical evidence of numerous works for which there would otherwise have been no documentation – some of these even well-known works – and for some unique works as well.

After the new edition of his Spinoza book clarifying his own standpoint no longer had priority, Jacobi changed his strategy. Contrary to the advice of Johann Georg Hamanns, he intervened in the polemic disputes, taking the side of the crypto Jesuits, Johann Kaspar Lavater and Johann August Starck. It was here that he tried to show that the claim to enlightenment made by »Berlinism« and »Illuminatism« had to come to nothing as long as it was based on a reason which claimed absolute authority without having grounds for doing so. The correspondence which began with Hamann’s flight from Jacobi’s house at the beginning of November 1787 and ended with his death in June of 1788 provides a multitude of references to the status of the debate.

The letters written between January and November of 1787 provide insight into a stage of Jacobi’s life and creativity which was characterized by changes after the death of the »Waffenträger« (armor bearer) Thomas Wizenmann . These concerned the situation at home and in the family as well as the political and social surroundings, primarily however Jacobi’s work as a journalist. In spite of his initially uninterrupted productivity, – his book on David Hume and the translation of ›Alexis‹ by Frans Hemsterhuis were published – he began to have doubts. The generally negative reception of his book on Spinoza, the second edition of Kant’s ›Critique of Pure Reason‹ and Herder‘s restitution of Spinoza put pressure on him to clarify his own position, which Jacobi tried to establish in discussions with friends and companions, first and foremost Johann Georg Hamann.

In 1785, Jacobi became the focus of attention in the philsophical dispute due to his work on the ›Lehre des Spinoza‹ (Spinoza’s Theory) and his quarrel with Mendelssohn concerning Lessing’s real or alleged Spinozism. It did not begin with the publication of Jacobi’s letters and of Mendelssohn’s ›Morgenstunden‹ (Morning Hours) in the fall but rather had already been looming in the previous letters and escalated during the course of the year, fed by rumors and fears. Among the people with whom he corresponded, Hamann must once again be singled out, Jacobi’s »good-hearted father, friend and brother«, and next to him Princess Gallitzin, Goethe and Herder.

The letters in the second volume show Jacobi at the height of his professional and political career. As a minister and privy councillor for the department of customs and trade, he saw to it that serfdom and compulsory labor were abolished in Palatinate-Bavaria. It was during this time that he wrote the two novels ›Eduard Allwills Papiere‹ (Eduard Allwill’s Papers) and ›Woldemar‹. His relationships with Wieland and Goethe were broken off after severe disputes. Among those with whom he corresponded, those who were important included J. K. Lavater, J. J. W. Heinse and J. G. Forster. In addition to his fateful friendship with Lessing, the second half of the volume is dominated by his connection to the Kreis von Münster (Münster Circle).

Along with his ›Neuen Organon‹; Lambert‘s ›Anlage zur Architectonic‹ (Architectonics) was one of the most influential philosophical works of the 18th century. The second and third part of this work in particular continue to deal with the problems of Wolff’s ontology – which Wolff and Baumgarten had already called ›architectonics‹ – while at the same putting them in a larger context. Kant in particular was influenced considerably by this. The objective of these indices, which were compiled using EDP methods, is to contribute to a better understanding of Lambert’s philosophy and to make and to enable a precise examination of its influence. To begin with, they contain the entire linguistic heritage, each part of which is in a main index, and list all the places each word is mentioned with the number of the page and the line. In view of the fact that there are not many reliable reference works for the 18th century, these indices are of interest not only to philosophers but also to literary scholars and philologists, since they document the language of that era unerringly and provide information on dates which can help with questions of historical language analysis. In addition, the volumes also contain several special indices which will serve special research interests. These include an index of persons as well as an index of the linguistic heritage in Latin, which is an important addition in view of the lack of lexica which are relevant to the Latin of the 18th century.
