In der Antike (Kap. 1) taucht der Begriff Eklektik nur bei Diogenes Laertios (der massgeblichen Quelle für den Begriff der philosophischen Auswahl-Eklektik), bei Clemens von Alexandria (patristische Eklektik) und in zwei medizinischen Texten auf. Im Blick auf die einschlägigen Argumentationsmuster der Neuzeit sind daneben aber auch mehrere antike Zitate und Gedanken begriffsgeschichtlich wichtig. Aus dem selben Grund muss die Behandlung der neuzeitlichen Autoren mit Petrarca einsetzen und Denker wie Valla (Freiheitsidee) und Vives sowie den Begriff des Synkretismus heranziehen. Das zweite Kapitel stellt aber auch das Auftauchen neuzeitlicher Spuren des Begriffs Eklektik dar, z. B. bei Bembo, Ramus, Lisius, Alsted und in der Philosophiegeschichtsschreibung. In sachlicher Hinsicht (Auswahl) ist besonders der Mediziner Sennert interessant. Die Zeit von 1640 bis 1650 zeigt den Begriff u. a. bei dem Historiker Selden, dem Theologen Taylor und dem Philosophen Heereboord; es handelt sich, so könnte man sagen, um die Zeit der Inkubation (Kap. 3), an die sich die Zeit des Durchbruchs des Begriffs (1650–1675; Kap. 4) anschliesst – eines Durchbruchs vor allem auf den Feldern der Geschichtsschreibung und der Naturwissenschaft. Die Jahre von 1675 bis zur Jahrhundertwende umschliessen die Blütezeit (Kap. 5), womit in erster Linie der überragende Beitrag gemeint ist, den Sturm als Naturwissenschaftler für den Begriff Eklektik leistete. In dieser Zeit schickte sich aber bereits die im Entstehen begriffene Idee des Selbstdenkens an, die Eklektik sowohl zu beerben als auch zu verändern (Thomasius; Budde und die ›Sache selbst‹). Das achtzehnte Jahrhundert zeigt daher den Abstieg des Begriffs in Form seiner Ausbreitung, Entleerung (Eklektik ohne Auswahl) und Auflösung (Kap. 6). Diese Entwicklung setzte also bereits lange vor Wolffs Einfluss (›System‹) ein, der gleichwohl eine deutliche Zäsur bildet – allerdings nicht in dem Sinne, dass nach dem Abklingen dieses Einflusses die Eklektik wieder ihr Haupt erhoben hätte. Auch wenn die katholische Eklektik noch einmal den Begriff der freien, selbstständigen Auswahl aufgriff, so bedeutete Eklektik am Ende des Jahrhunderts doch bei wichtigen Autoren, genauso wie heute, unselbstständige Vermischung, also Synkretismus im pejorativen Sinn. Dennoch gelang dem Begriff eine dreimalige Wiederkehr (Kap. 7): Cousins eklektischer Theaterdonner, der aber sowohl wegen der darauf bezogenen Kritik der Künstler wichtig ist als auch wegen der Zustimmung in der französischen Medizin; die eklektische Richtung (bzw. Sekte!) in der amerikanischen Medizin des 19. Jahrhunderts; die eklektische Psychotherapie des 20 Jahrhunderts.

Using Shaftesbury‹s philosophy of the forms of life, Angelica Baum, examines a new concept that was edging itself into the philosophy discourse around 1700 under the name »feeling.» Shaftesbury‹s »discovery« of feeling had sweeping anthropological, ethical and aesthetic consequences: It questions the uniformity of human nature and is combined with a critical reflection of the bounds of reason which reflects the fact that human action is not primarily and exclusively governed by reason. This opens up an area of valuable experience which leads to the moral sense theory and to aesthetics. In this conflict between aesthetics and ethics, the author does a philosophical analysis of the term »feeling» and its complexity.

In the 19th century, there were a number of attempts to use Hegel‹s aesthetics for research on art history. Heinrich Gustav Hotho was one of the main proponents of this project of linking philosophical foundations and empirical knowledge. The lecture on aesthetics in this work, which he held in 1833 at the same time as he was working on the edition of Hegel‹s ‹Aesthetics‹; is particularly revealing for Hotho‹s understanding of the science of art. Based on Hegel, but with a more dialectical reasoning, in this work he created the structure of aesthetics. This volume contains a detailed transcript of Hotho‹s lecture on aesthetics, written by Hegel‹s son Immanuel, whose comments in the margins have also been reproduced. In his lectures held first in Jena in 1802/3 and then repeated in Würzburg in 1804 and 1805, Schelling developed his new philosophy of art, which was radical when compared to all previous aesthetics, subsequent to the ›System‹ of 1800 and the lectures ›On the Method of Academic Study‹. Schelling dismissed the effect aesthetics and the imitation aesthetics which had been common right up to Kant in favor of an aesthetics of medium and genre. This was based on the insight that »art represents a world which is as self-contained and complete as nature is«. In the philosophy of art, Schelling implemented the approach of identity philosophy paradigmatically from the perspective of system and content. This edition will make the text accessible in a new editorial form as a catalogue (available on a CD-ROM) of references to music, the visual arts, architecture and literature. The edition is based on the texts from the literary estate in the ›Sämmtlichen Werken‹ and will include the previously unknown unpublished transcripts from Jena and Würzburg.

Bernard Bolzano (1781–1848) is one of the major figures in the history of ideas. Due to his ›Wissenschaftslehre‹ (Theory of Science) and the new foundation for logic and epistemology it provided, he came the forefather of phenomenology and also the forerunner of scientific philosophy and pure research in the 20th century. He was far ahead of his time with his ideas on theology, the philosophy of religion, ethics and political philosophy, which are still of interest today. Through his publications, he also gained an excellent reputation as a mathematician during his lifetime.His comprehensive literary estate contains a broad description and a new foundation for mathematics. In addition to many innovative ideas, in it he developed some of the main concepts of the set theory, which was eventually developed at a later date, as he also did in his work ›Paradoxien des Unendlichen‹ (Paradoxes of the Infinite), which was published posthumously. The full extent of Bolzano’s significance for the history of ideas was not actually recognizable until publication of the Bernard Bolzano Gesamtausgabe (Collected Works) began. This edition includes not only text-critical new editions of all of his works but in addition many previously inaccessible sources (unpublished manuscripts, diary entries, correspondence etc) are being made available for research for the first time.

In order to do so, he had to analyze the concept of the truth in itself to begin with, and this analysis led him to the concept of the proposition in itself.
