The first reception of Kant directly after publication of the ›Critique of Pure Reason‹ is one of the most momentous and fascinating stages in the recent history of philosophy. Surprisingly not much research has been done on this. This volume is the result of an exhibition of early Kantianism at the University of Jena in 1993. It helps to make the source material more easily accessible. Chapters on Ch. G. Schütz, C. Ch. E. Schmid, the ›Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung‹; Reinhold, Schiller, Hufeland among others provide new insight into this early stage of Kant's reception. There are approximately 100 illustrations which present very valuable source material, some of which was previously completely unknown.

The letters deal with the philosophy and theology taught in Tübingen. Evidence of this background is provided in an abundance of explanatory annotations, as is the evidence of Spinozas influence. Five different versions were used for the text structure of the ›Philosophische Briefe‹ (Philosophical Letters). It is established in the editorial report that he was familiar with the names of the important teachers of natural law of his time. The volume concludes with the first complete reprint of the ›Anti-Critique‹ in a collected edition – including the critique which instigated it.

This volume traces the external and internal history of the Academy Plato‹s school, up to the time of Cicero (and up until its official closing in 529 AD) and focuses on the question of how much was known of the teachings of Plato and his followers in the 1st century BC, i.e. what were the foundations of knowledge which formed the basis of Platonism as it emerged during the early imperial period. This critical edition of Bolzano’s main philosophical work incorporates his own corrections, among other things. It originated as Bolzano’s attempt to refute skepticism. In order to do so, he had to analyze the concept of the truth in itself to begin with, and this analysis led him to the concept of the proposition in itself. The edition by Wilhelm Bolin and Friedrich Jodl was published by our company for the first time between 1903 and 1911 in 10 volumes. Among the works written in his youth, this is the first publication of two of them, both of which are indispensable for gaining insight into Feuerbach‹s (1804-1872) philosophical development: his dissertation from 1828 and the ›Gedanken über Tod und Unsterblichkeit‹ (Thoughts on Death and Immortality) published anonymously in 1830, a work which denied Feuerbach a university career for all of his life. The youthful works contain a chronological table as well as a bibliography of the works by and about Feuerbach. This reprint contains previously unpublished Feuerbach letters which have been added to the edition of the letters from and by Feuerbach, edited by W. Bolin and published in 1904. Among the letters which have been added there are 18 addressed to Arnold Ruge, and these provide some insight into the Left or Young Hegelians who were in the process of formation.

In the 16th and 17th century, logic was the philosophical discipline which was pursued most intensively. Nevertheless today our knowledge of the logic of this time is only fragmentary. There are cracks in the interpretation of this vast amount of material, since it is difficult to conceive of all of the problems in logic at that time and to show how logic gradually abandoned Aristotle and scholasticism in search of a new foundation. The second volume deals with the history of logic from the emergence of Cartesianism up to the end of the Enlightenment. The logic of that time was intertwined with epistemological, metaphysical and also psychological problems. Thus it is not formal logic. On the other hand, the idea of a mathematical method was becoming increasingly important in the 17th and 18th centuries.
