Six different editions of ›Vom Ich als Princip der Philosophie‹ (On Self as a Principle of Philosophy) were incorporated in this edition. The editorial report makes it clear that in addition to the influence of Fichtes the influence of Spinozas was also very strong. The concept of the absolute takes an independent approach as opposed to Fichte’s concept of the transcendental ego. This is the first page-related edition of Schellings synopsis of ›On Self‹. The dissertation ›De Marcione‹ on the Paulinist heretic of the 2nd century concludes the theological works of his youth (see Series II). The editorial report provides insight into the history of its origins, and the annotations provide information on the theological literature which Schelling used. The translation into German makes the text more easily accessible.

This is the first publication of the ›Elegie‹ (Elegy) and the ›Erklärung‹ (Explanation) (along with the review which instigated it) in a Schelling edition. The ›Elegy‹ is evidence of the first connections to pietism. First attempts at Schellings main theme, mythology, are to be found in ›De malorum origine‹ und ›Über Mythen‹ (On Myths). The treatises follow the epochal studies of von Heyne, Eichhorn und Gabler. In his ›Form der Philosophie‹ (On the Possibility of an Absolute Form of Philosophy), Schelling, inspired by Fichte, tries to define philosophy as the self-understanding of reason or freedom. His dissertation ›De malorum origine‹ includes a translation into German.

One obstacle to understanding Schelling‹s philosophy of nature is the fact that Schelling assumed that contemporary readers had a knowledge of the sciences at that time which today‹s reader generally does not have. The editors have attempted to remedy this: The supplementary volume to Volumes 5-9 completes the explanations in the corresponding volumes. It presents a selection of scientific and medical theories from the 17th and 18th centuries to which Schelling refers. In dealing with the references Schelling made to the individual scientific disciplines, the ›History of Science Report‹ gives the research into Schelling‹s philosophy of nature an appropriate basis.

The principles of the edition for series III are at the beginning of the first volume. This contains 144 letters from and to Schelling, 10 of which were previously unpublished, during his years of study in Tübingen, his time travelling as a private tutor, and in Leipzig as well as as from his first years as a professor in Jena. The letters which Schelling wrote to his parents while travelling can be read as a travel journal. Of special significance is the correspondence with Hegel, Fichte and the editors of the ›Allgemeinen Literatur-Zeitung‹; the letters to Niethammer and to his publisher Breitkopf & Härtel as well as letters from Steffens to Schelling. In order to provide an overview, a list of the individual letters and a table containing data on Schelling‹s life and work up to 1799 have been added.

For the first time, this volume provides access to Schelling's earliest works, written during his schooldays in Bebenhausen, in a historical-critical edition. This includes the ›Oratio canicularis‹ (Hundstagrede – Dog Days Speech), held at the completion of school, in which he spoke about the usefulness of classical languages. Some of the texts can be traced back to Joseph Friedrich Schelling's classes which he had been giving as a professor at the monastery school in Bebenhausen since 1777. The interpretation of the Psalms which evolved from this documents the beginnings of Schelling‹s preoccupation with biblical hermeneutics and exegetics. In addition to this work, the volume contains two Latin poems, written in hexameter, as well as the text fragment »Geschichte des Klosters Bebenhausen« (A History of the Bebenhausen Monastery) as well as interpretations of ancient Greek authors such as Isocrates and Pindar.

In his work ›Bruno oder über das göttliche und natürliche Princip der Dinge‹ (Bruno, or On the Natural and Divine Principle of Things), published in the summer of 1802, Schelling describes the main features of his identity philosophy based on the model of a Platonic dialogue. All the essays that Schelling published in the first volume of the ›Critical Journal of Philosophy‹ originated in 1802. These included ›Ueber das absolute Identitäts-System‹ (On the Absolute Identity System), a critical dispute with Reinhold, as well as ›Rückert and Weiss, oder die Philosophie zu der es keines Denkens und Wissens bedarf‹ (Rückert and Weiss, or the Philosophy Which Requires no Thinking or Knowledge). In the text structure, the edition has taken all other editions into consideration and makes these accessible in editorial reports and explanatory annotations.

In this work, Schelling presented the first system of German idealism. It summarizes the reflection of his early philosophizing and leads into the system of identity. Containing individual chapters on history and art, it introduced subjects which attained great significance in the contemporary discussion and in Schelling’s subsequent philosophy. Schelling’s ›System des transscendentalen Idealismus‹ (System of Transcendental Idealism) was first published in 1800 and then in 1816 in a previously almost unknown Swedish edition. These two editions as well as the publication in the ›Sämmtlichen Werken‹ have been incorporated into the text structure. The known copies of the first printing have been collated. Entries made by Schelling in his own personal copy, which have been handed down in the ›Sämmtlichen Werke‹; are given separately. An editorial report, explanatory annotations and indexes are also included.

The letters deal with the philosophy and theology taught in Tübingen. Evidence of this background is provided in an abundance of explanatory annotations, as is the evidence of Spinozas influence. It is due to this historical-critical edition that Schellings position can be understood precisely for the first time. Five different versions were used for the text structure of the ›Philosophische Briefe‹ (Philosophical Letters). In the ›Deduction des Naturrechts‹ (Deduction of Natural Law), Schelling only mentions a single name, contrary to his previous practice. It is established in the editorial report that he was familiar with the names of the important teachers of natural law of his time. The volume concludes with the first complete reprint of the ›Anti-Critique‹ in a collected edition – including the critique which instigated it.

The ›Allgemeine Übersicht‹ (›Abhandlungen zur Erläuterung des Idealismus der Wissenschaftslehre‹); (Treatises on the Explanation of the Idealism of the Theory of Science) 2nd edition 1809, was published anonymously between November 1796 and July 1798 in the ›Philosophical Journal‹ edited by Niethammer and Fichte . Schelling intervened in the dispute surrounding Kantian philosophy in order to take a stand against the conservative Kantians and against Reinhold and to indicate his own position. The edition incorporates five different versions of the first printing and gives a bibliographical analysis of the literature which Schelling quoted or to which he alluded. Schelling’s scathing criticism of Schlossers anti-Kantian missives, which had caused a stir (Schiller: »miserable emptiness and platitude«, is also in the context of the Kant debate. The editorial report deals with this controversy. In his review entitled ›Ueber Offenbarung und Volksunterricht‹ (On Revelation and National Education) of Niethammer›s dissertation ›De Revelatione‹; Schelling enlarges upon Niethammer‹s criticism of the concept of revelation, which excludes this concept from the use of reason and restricts it to an educational usefulness. The subsequent atheism dispute was forthcoming.
