Soziale beziehungsweise karitative Organisationen leisten wichtige Arbeit am Rande der Wahrnehmung der Gesellschaft. Sie sorgen dafür, dass benachteiligten und in Not geratenen Menschen geholfen wird. Entsprechend der politischen Willensentscheidungen steht für die Arbeit dieser Organisationen mehr oder weniger Steuergeld oder Spendengeld zur Verfügung. Die Finanzierung karitativer Nonprofit Organisationen (NPO) richtet sich verkürzt ausgedrückt nach dem Bewusstsein der Bevölkerung für soziale Probleme. Nur wie entsteht ein solches gesellschaftliches Bewusstsein? Im Einzelfall durch hautnahes, persönliches Erleben oder aber durch gezielte Kommunikation über soziale Problematiken und mögliche Lösungsansätze. Diejenigen, die tagtäglich mit sozialen Notlagen zu tun haben, die vielen kleinen oder grossen karitativen Organisationen, haben meist wenig Zeit und noch weniger Geld über ihre Wahrnehmungen sozialer Probleme zu informieren und auf diese Themen hinzuweisen. Besonders betroffen von dieser Misere sind die so genannten sozialen Drittleistungs-NPOs. Teilweise rigide Förder- oder Subventionsverträge erlauben es ihnen kaum Mittel in die Kommunikation zu investieren. Auch private Gönner, so es sie gibt, sehen es in der Regel nicht gerne, wenn ihre Spenden nicht direkt dem sozialen Zweck, sondern der Kommunikation über die Problematik zugeführt werden. Was den Verantwortlichen in sozialen NPOs bleibt, ist oft nur die Hoffnung auf wohlwollende Journalisten, um auf "ihre" Themen aufmerksam zu machen und sie einer breiten Öffentlichkeit zu vermitteln. Der Autor dieser Arbeit war viele Jahre in leitenden Funktionen im Bereich sozialer NPOs in Wien tätig und mit den folgenden Themen immer wieder konfrontiert: 1. Soziale NPOs brauchen Kommunikation, um soziale Themen ins Bewusstsein einer breiten Öffentlichkeit zu bringen (zur Absicherung der eigenen Existenz und zur indirekten Beeinflussung politischer Entscheidungsträger etc.). 2. Kommunikation darf aus ethischen Gründen nicht auf Kosten der Würde der betroffenen Klienten erfolgen (also nicht durch voyeuristisches zur Schau stellen von Einzelschicksalen). 3. Soziale NPOs haben geringe Ressourcen (kein/kaum Budgets, wenig Personal) für Kommunikation. Diese Diskrepanz: „Notwendigkeit von Kommunikation“ versus „kaum Budget“ veranlasste den Autor dazu, nach neuen - wirkungsvollen und kostengünstigen - Kommunikationsinstrumenten zu suchen. So hat der Verfasser im Rahmen seiner Tätigkeit in und für NPOs mehrmals Events konzipiert und organisiert; Events, die positive Reaktionen bei speziellen Zielgruppen (Mitarbeitern, Klienten, Sponsoren etc.) hervorriefen und die darüber hinaus zu einer deutlichen Steigerung der Medienberichterstattung führten und die so kostengünstig eine breite Öffentlichkeit auf soziale Themen aufmerksam machen konnten. Diese Erfahrungen waren Anlass, sich mit dem Thema Event Marketing als Kommunikationsinstrument im Rahmen sozialer NPOs eingehender auseinander zu setzen.
