This book is the result of three intensive years of investigation performed by partners from 9 European countries, including consulting companies, university institutes and municipalities within the project The Use of Life Cycle Assessment Tools for the Development of Integrated Waste Management Strategies for Cities and Regions with Rapid Growing Economies (LCA-IWM). The project was funded by the European Commission’s Fifth Framework Programme. Each chapter deals in depth with a different aspect of municipal waste management systems. A method for the prognosis of waste generation is described. The reader is also provided with a clear understanding and significant criteria for the evaluation in terms of sustainability of the waste management situation. The book not only answers the question “how we are”; but also provides the reader with key tools to the more important point “how can we improve it”. One of the most important contributions of the project is the creation of two user adjustable computer assisted tool which support the accurate making of decisions in the waste management field, where rapid developing municipalities find it difficult to successfully plan their systems in order to fulfill the growing requirements of the European regulations. This Handbook also provides guidelines for the use of the developed Waste Prognostic Tool and the Municipal Solid Waste Management System Assessment Tool.

Around 99 % of all EU companies are SMEs which provide up to 70 % of all jobs. Generally, SMEs have good future growth prospects, however they are specifically well equipped to solve environmental problems, hence grow in the green economy. Nowadays, the biggest bottleneck is the significant skills shortage in most economic sectors while job vacancies in SMEs and overall unemployment, in particular youth unemployment, is steadily growing. A a result of cooperation between educational institutions and industry entities, work-based learning has become a prominent tool to eliminate bottlenecks and create conditions for further growth in innovative market segments. To continuously coordinate education and skills requirements, and address skills shortages, higher education institutions along with education and training providers, and economic chambers from 7 countries built up and established an alliance for the following sectors: "Water, Wastewater, Waste and Circular Economy". This alliance was then extended to 13 countries with 74 education and labour market actors and continues to perform its duties as the "Eco Innovation" centre of competence in the long term. Hochwasser ist in der heutigen Zeit eine gefürchtete Naturkatastrophe, die durch die anthropogene Nutzung des eigentlichen Flussbettes zu verheerenden Folgen führen kann. Durch ein Hochwasser-Risikomanagement soll versucht werden, Hochwasserschäden zu mindern oder gar zu vermeiden. Dieses Management wird in heute gängigen GI-Systemen (Geographischen Informations-Systemen) verarbeitet und nach dem EVAP-Prinzip (Erfassung, Verarbeitung, Analyse, Präsentation) durchgeführt. Ziel der Studie von Sören Steinbach ist die Berechnung von Überschwemmungsbereichen an der Elbe. Das Untersuchungsgebiet wurde aufgrund der Hochwasserkatastrophe vom August 2002 an der Elbe zwischen Torgau und Wittenberg/L. gewählt. Hier wird ein Floodriskmanagement zur Visualisierung von Überschwemmungsflächen durchgeführt, bei dem durch Einspeisung einer Zuflussganglinie ein Deichbruchszenario simuliert wird. Die in dieser Studie verwendeten Satellitenbilder des Sensors Landsat 7 ETM+ vom 20.08.2002 und 14.08.2000 waren frei verfügbar und wurden zur Unterstützung der Visualisierung herangezogen. Durch die Darstellung im Verschnitt der beiden Szenen kann eindrucksvoll dargestellt werden, wie verheerend die Ortschaften durch die Flutkatastrophe in Mitleidenschaft gezogen worden sind. Mit dem Ergebnis der Berechnung wird eine mögliche Überschwemmungssituation simuliert, die der Realität ziemlich nahe kommt und ausserdem auf jedes andere Einzugsgebiet übertragbar ist. Das Ergebnis ist weitestgehend realitätsnah und bietet somit einen Anreiz für weiteren Forschungsbedarf …

However, existing human resource management systems have often not yet been adapted to support HR decision makers in this task and IS support for team staffing is rather scarce. Existing systems only consider whether a person has the required technical skills and abilities for a job. Those systems (1) are not able to capture the latent aspects that typically underlie personnel selection decisions, (2) do not consider candidate preferences and (3) especially neglect to consider the match between the person and the team members in terms of interpersonal compatibility. This book presents a decision support system based on an automated recommendation approach for providing a pre-selection of candidates that fit best with a specific job and with future team members. The system contributes to literature by proposing an IS-supported approach for the selection of individuals for teams and to practice by offering time and cost savings for HR professionals.

Integration of processes and supporting IT tools is a key factor for successful Facility Management. After a review of the present situation of Facility Management the author describes an „integrated” process model for the conception, planning and construction processes of facilities, providing integration into the whole life cycle. The target costing method is presented as a means to grant proper conception, planning and construction in accordance with the needs of the investor, the user and the operator. To be able to provide figures for the target costing methodology, a concept for efficient IT process support during the utilisation phase is developed. This includes two levels: the operative level and the controlling level based on the data of the operative processes. The concept is based on standard reference models of the key FM processes of the utilisation phase and on an analysis of the existing functionality of the relevant IT tools. A concept for the integration of existing IT tools is presented, that provides the necessary interaction and data exchange to support the newly introduced parts of the workflow. Based on this integration unified objects are defined, combining the distributed information of the FM business objects. This results in a joint FM database structure. The support of the operative processes and the joint data structure enable standardised calculation of benchmarks for controlling purposes. Finally, these benchmarks are the basis for a statistical method that allows the calculation of the utilisation costs in the conception phase.
