Western social scientists can improve their understanding of post-Soviet Russia by studying the new discipline of Russian International Relations (IR). This collection introduces recent developments in Russian international studies. It identifies key trends in Russian IR knowledge that are reflective of the transitional nature of Russia’s post-Soviet change. The volume also demonstrates that Russia remains open to different theoretical and ideological traditions. It invites scholars to move away from excessively West-centered IR scholarship by exploring indigenous Russian perceptions and inviting dialogue across the globe. Andrei Tsygankov and Pavel Tsygankov on Russia’s identity and IR theory; Alexander Sergunin on post-communist international discussions; Tatyana Shakleyina and Alexei Bogaturov on the Russian Realist school of international relations; Pavel Tsygankov and Andrei Tsygankov on the discourse of Russian Liberal IR theorists; Mikhail Ilyin on the Russian study of globalization and equity; Eduard Solovyev on Russian geopolitics; Nail Mukharyamov on studies of ethnicity in post-Soviet Russia; Stanislav Tkachenko on Russian international political economy; Marina Lebedeva on Russian studies of international negotiations.

“This study represents a significant step towards understanding an important social phenomenon in Canada at the end of the twentieth and beginning of the twenty-first century. Throughout much of the twentieth century the life of virtually all Aboriginal people had been marked by a set of policies directed from Ottawa. These had contributed to undermining both their traditional cultures and also the familial bonds vital for the development of a positive self-image and a healthy relationship with other members of society, as also with society as a whole. The negative impact of such policies is now very widely recognised and documented. The study does not set out to shed further light on this set of causes and effects. What it does do, successfully, is investigate a number of the linguistic strategies based partly on aboriginal discursive models, partly on positive presentation of a range of topics handled very differently in Euro-Canadian media, and partly on the propagation and consistent use of key items of terminology, some of which have begun to enter at least some of the Euro-Canadian media and strands of political discourse.” Prof. Robert Gould Carleton University Ottawa The analytical framework employed in this study is Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). CDA is said to focus on relevant social, cultural and political problems and processes. Accordingly, its task is both deconstructive and constructive. However, the emphasis of research in CDA is mainly on ‘problems’ and the deconstructive moment, which aims at revealing hidden and not-so-hidden linguistic strategies and how dominant discourses are appropriated or ‘naturalized’. The analysis presented in this book runs counter to this generally employed CDA practice. It pays attention to constructive moments. The focus is on counter-discourses as they are used by Aboriginal people in Canada to resist ingrained hegemonic practices, to build and develop new power relations as well as social and political identities.

The book series Changing Europe contains edited volumes dealing with current political, economic and social affairs in Eastern Europe and the enlarged EU. The core of the series is formed by contributions to the Changing Europe Summer Schools, which are being organised by the Research Centre for East European Studies at the University of Bremen. The series is edited by Dr. Sabine Fischer (EU Institute for Security Studies, Paris), Dr. Heiko Pleines (Research Centre for East European Studies at the University of Bremen) and Prof. Dr. Hans-Henning Schröder (University of Bremen and German Institute for International and Security Affairs, Berlin). The end of socialism posed a historical challenge to European societies. The former socialist Central and East European countries were faced with what has been called a"triple transformation": Mutually dependent changes in the political, economic, and social spheres. At the same time, the old EU member states had to develop strategies to react to these developments and integrate former socialist societies. This post-socialist transformation of Europe coincided with a number of broader trends in the political, economic, and social spheres which are often collectively referred to as globalisation. Success or failure to adapt to these changes creates winners and losers. The focus of this edited volume is on various groups of losers and the challenges they face as a result of their marginalisation. This book presents the results of the Changing Europe Summer School on"Justice as a societal and political matter. Equality, social and legal security as conditions for democracy and the market"that took place in Berlin in July 2006. The Summer School brought together more than 30 young scholars from all over the world who work on issues

The central question addressed by the papers collected in this book is whether trade unions from the post-socialist states have successfully represented their interests at the EU level. At issue is not only their purely formal integration into umbrella organizations and EU bodies; of much greater concern is their actual participation in political decision-making processes and the resulting impact at the national and sub-national level. The book therefore examines the integration and Europeanisation of a vital part of those societies which joined the EU in 2004. The empirical focus is on case studies from the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia. The book is based on the research project Already arrived in Brussels? Interest representation of trade unions from the new EU member states at the EU level, which was with financial support from the Otto Brenner Foundation carried out under the guidance of the Research Centre for East European Studies at the University of Bremen.

This book maps out the history of Czechoslovak linguistic and social practices directed at Roma during the communist period. It explains how contemporary Czech society has come to understand the Romani population in terms of inherited social, medical and juridical ideas. Rather than focusing on the Roma people as an object of analysis, the book problematizes assumed notions of “Gypsiness” and “Czechness” in mainstream society by highlighting the role of different socialist discourses in constructing images of Roma as socially deviant and abnormal. By uncovering the lines of continuity in the intersections of ethnic discrimination, social deviance and citizenship from the 1950s to the collapse of communism, this book comes to terms with a variety of questions that have not yet been adequately addressed in the literature: What underlying assumptions informed the socialist regime’s understanding of “Gypsiness;” and how did these conceptions relate to notions of citizenship, equality and normality? How and why did the meaning of the terms “Gypsies” and “Roma” become imbued in popular discourse with ideas of unhealthiness and social deviance? What implications does translating perceived cultural traits and lifestyles of Roma into non-ethnic frames of reference have for understanding racism and ethnic sensibilities in the country today? The work emphasizes historical continuities between contemporary xenophobia and the strategies which the communist regime used to deal with the “Gypsy question.” Focusing on the discrepancies between written laws and policies as well as their implementation, this study exposes the intricate relationships between official beliefs, institutional policies and popular consciousness under the communist regime. For it was these relationships which together created the mechanisms of social control that facilitated discrimination of Czechoslovak Roma under the guise of social welfare.
