Untersuchungsgegenstand sind Publikationen, Pressetexte und -berichte von bzw. über CeNIDE, die in den Jahren 2008 bis 2011 veröffentlicht wurden und jeweils unterschiedliche CeNIDE-Kontexte repräsentieren. Die vergleichende Analyse dieser Kontexte basiert auf dem Co-Occurrence-Ansatz, der zur Positionierung häufig benutzter Wörter im mehrdimensionalen Raum dient. Die Ähnlichkeit der Wort-Positionierungen wird per Distanzmass und Faktorenanalyse ermittelt, sodass latente Frames in semantischen Netzwerken visualisiert und für jeden Kontext verglichen werden können. Die Ergebnisse lassen Rückschlüsse über kontextabhängige Interessengebiete zu, die bei CeNIDE-Wissenschaftlern vorrangig in der Grundlagenforschung, bei der Öffentlichkeitsarbeit in Events und News sowie bei den Medien in Anwendungsmöglichkeiten zu verorten sind.

History and Legacy of Industrialization in Europe and Asia, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this paper is the discussion of a recent article presented by Joel Mokyr who offered, according to his own words, a new ¿variant of the European Miracle question¿1. The main thesis of his article The Great Synergy: the European Enlightenment as a factor in Modern Economic growth points to the European Enlightenment as being a crucial factor for attaining and establishing modern, i.e. sustainable economic growth in Europe once the British Industrial Revolution had overcome its humble beginnings at the end of the eighteenth century. Mokyr argues that the stability of economic growth which was reached in Europe after 1825 was to a great extent due to a new attitude towards the relation between technology and progress. This new attitude was the result of a development that had its roots in the European Enlightenment where the foundations for a new understanding of science and technology were laid. The outcome of this development was the unique ¿idea of research¿ that made scientists and craftsmen cooperate, giving way to a very fruitful convergence of science and technology that helped making sustainable economic growth possible. This evolution mingled with the modification of institutional mechanisms which was a result of the Enlightenment, too. These two trends both formed a ¿Great Synergy¿ that finally yielded the ¿European Miracle¿. To prove and strengthen his thesis, Mokyr compares the history of European sciences with those practiced in China coming to see that Chinese sciences were confined to and restricted by the Mandarin rulers, thus a situation similar to pre-enlightened Europe. But his comparisons to the Asian continent are limited to the situation in China. It could therefore be telling to have a look at Indian sciences, especially when discovering that India ¿had a wellestablished scientific and technological tradition of its own long before being subjected to an extended period of European colonial rule¿2. Going deeper into Indian history we will see, that on top of that, before the colonization by the British, ¿traditional knowledge generated large-scale economic productivity for Indians¿3. Departing from these considerations, the present paper will put Mokyr¿s assumption under inspection examining the Indian history of science and technology. The arising problem is thus twofold, implicating questions that are clearly inter-related with each other and which are touching fields both of science and economy. [...]

Das literarische Wirken wurde begrenzt. Durch die Androhung von Sanktionen wie Zwangsausbürgerung wollte die DDR die Möglichkeit Kritik am "real existierenden Sozialismus" zu üben, unterbinden, da Stimmen eindeutiger Ablehnung, nicht laut werden konnten. Der Literatur wurde eine grosse Bedeutung beigemessen. Der SED Staat war überzeugt, "die Literatur könne die Entwicklung der Gesellschaft bestimmen". Die politische Führung seit Honeckers Amtszeit war auf eine zustimmende Literatur angewiesen, weil sich der "real existierende Sozialismus" "seiner selbst nicht sicher war und den Protest fürchtete". Der Staat lebte in "ständiger Angst vor der möglichen Autonomie der Literatur". Diese Funktion beeinträchtigte die Hochliteratur dahingehend, dass sie oft stumm bleiben musste und zur Selbstzensur genötigt wurde. Die "Nationalliteratur" sah sich demnach gezwungen, anderen Distributions-, Produktions-, und Rezeptionsweisen zu folgen und auf andere Betrachtungs-, und Bewertungssysteme auszuweichen. Literaten entdeckten für sich die Unterhaltungsliteratur, die bis Ende der 1980er Jahre allgemein oft noch als "trivial" galt, in diesem Sinne auch die Science Fiction. War sie in der DDR bis Mitte der 70er Jahre nur unterhaltend, so wurde sie nun mit philosophischen und gesellschaftsthematisierenden Darstellungen vermengt, die den Unterhaltungswert im funktionalen Sinne in den Hintergrund schoben. Somit wurde der Science Fiction der 1980er Jahre die Funktion zugesprochen, durch das Stilmittel der Verfremdung opponieren zu können. Im Folgenden werden exemplarisch die Science Fiction Romane "Das kugeltranszendentale Vorhaben" (1983) von Johanna und Günter Braun und "Andymon. Eine Weltraumutopie." (1982) von Angela und Karlheinz Steinmüller dahingehend geprüft und verglichen, inwiefern sie Kritik am "real existierenden Sozialismus" der DDR üben. Jener, weil er nie in der DDR veröffentlicht werden durfte und Letzterer, weil es unzensiert erfolgreich war. Auf die Deutung der Hauptaussagen wird fokussiert. Die zahlreichen Details, deren Verfremdung diskutabel sind, werden vereinzelt argumentativ berücksichtigt.

Recently, however, consultants and international investors have started pressuring business houses to reduce diversification. Focusing on India's most diversified conglomerate and a benchmark portfolio of unaffiliated Indian firms, this study examines the impact of Tata Group affiliation on firm performance. Results show a significant positive relation between group membership and performance, both in terms of Tobin's q and ROA. Differentiating between different degrees of group affiliation (DOA), the analysis further reveals that the higher the influence from the centre, the higher the positive impact on firm performance. From all analyzed DOA factors, the inclusion of senior group level executives or Tata family members in the management of affiliates seems to boost affiliates' performance the most. A possible interpretation of this finding is that direct managerial involvement from the centre increases firms' access to group level resources. Furthermore, group level executives are matured professionals and leaders, who bring in valuable business knowledge, thereby increasing the long-term prospects of the affiliate and evoking trust among investors. Overall, the findings of this paper suggest that even in a more liberal and globalized India, the conglomerate structure can still be financially beneficial and is far from outdated. The Tata Group is one such positive example.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Philosophy - Miscellaneous, grade: A+, University of Pittsburgh (USA), course: Senior Seminar in the History and Philosophy of Science, language: English, abstract: Most biologists resist positive claims about Lamarckian modes of inheritance, as they perceive such claims as threatening the hegemony of the Darwinian paradigm in which they operate. However, this hesitance may be misguided and unconstructive, should it arise from misconceptions about the relationship between contemporary ¿Lamarckian¿ discoveries and the views which Lamarck himself actually held. Given the recent revitalization of interest in Lamarckian evolutionary perspectives (Cairns et al. 1988, Hall 1991, Ewer 1996, 2004; Steele 1979, 1998; Jablonka and Lamb 2007), and the lingering ambiguity concerning what constitutes Lamarckian theses, it would be prudent to evaluate the relationship between contemporary Lamarckian theses and traditional Lamarckian positions. Scientists working in evolutionary fields tend to label as ¿Lamarckian¿ any claims that imply the inheritance of somatic mutations; adaptations derived through interaction between the organism and environment, and subsequently passed to offspring (the most famous example being the giraffe stretching its legs and neck to reach higher leaves). However, the relationship connecting contemporary ¿Neo-Lamarckian¿ ideas and traditional Lamarckian ideas is dubious at best, and conceptually misleading at worst, both for working scientists and casual laymen. For example, traditional Lamarckian inheritance acts through the whole organism or its parts, while modern Lamarckian inheritance tends to act on individual cells or even whole populations. The invocation of the label ¿Lamarckian¿ carries historical and conceptual baggage that I would like to disambiguate from recent, supposedly ¿Lamarckian¿ modes of inheritance. To accomplish this, I will reveal and clarify the evolutionary claims that Lamarck himself published, most notably in Jean-Batiste Lamarck¿s Philosophie Zoologique, and evaluate the relationship between his traditional claims, and more recent claims labeled as ¿Lamarckian¿ by contemporary scientists. This paper will provide an analysis of the conceptual interplay occurring between modern Lamarckian claims, and what Lamarck actually believed and published, via an investigation of the evolution of the term Lamarckian/Lamarckism from 1809 to the present; my conclusion, then, should be a fair appraisal of the relationship existing between Lamarck¿s actual claims and contemporary Neo-Lamarckian claims.

The theoretical basic concept of deferred taxes should give you the idea and a definition of deferred taxes. Afterwards I would like to present the different causes for creating deferred taxes. The causes for creating deferred taxes will be emphasized by give examples. For a better understanding I would like to explain in the following the steps the methods of determination. You have to know that the IAS determines the deferred taxes by using the temporary concept. Because I would like to underline the differences I will present in short form the timing concept too. The temporary concept includes the timing and the temporary differences and excludes the permanent differences. Now we have to find a definition for each type of difference. If we know the idea of deferred taxes and we know how to determine them, we will be interested in the evaluation of deferred taxes. Therefore I will describe the liability method used by IAS and to show the differences I will describe the deferred method. For a better understanding I would like to conclude my report by giving the different way of calculation deferred taxes by using the deferred method and the liability method.

In the eyes of Hughes and Wright, custom, tradition and religion may be seen as some of the root causes of racism because they are largely interiorized, but they by far cannot serve alone as satisfying explanations for it. Important in the creation of racism is e.g. the negative projection of colored people in the media. Consequently, this forms a fatal preconception of blacks that is constantly being reproduced. Langston Hughes and Richard Wright, among the most prolific of American writers, gained international attention and acclaim in nearly every genre of writing, including poetry, the short story, the novel, drama, the libretto, the autobiography, journalistic prose, children's and adolescent literature and song lyrics. Although much of their writing, often expressing social protest, was easily accessible to scholars and general readers, there is one genre ¿the essay¿ that has gone largely unnoticed. Yet such essays and short, non-fiction passages contribute significantly to Hughes¿s and Wright¿s work, striving for racial equality on a local level, a national, as well as global levels. At first glance, it may appear fruitless to compare the non-fiction works of Hughes and Wright, since the writers became famous for their poetry and fictional masterpieces. Also, a comparison between Wright¿s rather epic artistic style and Hughes¿s dense, often ironic prose may seem unlikely and difficult. Hughes was a columnist for the famous African-American newspaper, the ¿Chicago Defender,¿ where he commented on contemporary issues and chronicled the hopes and despairs of his people. In spite of the different origins of the writers, Hughes and Wright were confronted early on with race discrimination and segregation, publicly know as ¿Jim Crow-ism1,¿ which was identified and condemned in their essays.

Projektarbeit aus dem Jahr 2006 im Fachbereich Pädagogik - Schulpädagogik, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Erziehungswissenschaften), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Das Spectrum, das Science Center des Deutschen Technikmuseums Berlin, zählt mit seinen etwa 250 interaktiven Experimenten zu den grossen Einrichtungen dieser Art in Europa. Es ist der Ort innerhalb des Technikmuseums, an dem lustvolles, selbst bestimmtes Lernen gezielt gefördert wird. Sein Ziel ist es, das Interesse an Naturwissenschaft und Technik zu wecken sowie Jung und Alt dazugehörige Gesetzmässigkeiten und Methoden nahe zu bringen. Mit seiner lebendigen, interaktiv-spielerischen Vermittlung entsprechender Inhalte scheint dies zu gelingen. So ist das Science Center als Ort ausserschulischer und informeller Bildung seit vie-len Jahren beliebt und anerkannt. Es trägt mit der Erfüllung dieses gesellschaftlichen Bil-dungsauftrages seinen Teil dazu bei, den in den verschiedenen Studien (z.B. TIMSS, PISA) aufgezeigten Defiziten in der naturwissenschaftlichen Grundbildung entgegen zu wirken (vgl. Lührs/Neuert 2005, S. 65). In Fortführung der Tradition der 1889 eröffneten Berliner Urania blickt das Spectrum auf über 110 Jahre Historie zurück. Die Urania war seinerzeit das erste Institut der Welt, welches Ex-perimentiersäle für Laien anbot. Die Besucher konnten hier etwa einhundert Versuche zu Me-chanik, Akustik, Elektrizität und Optik selbst ausprobieren. Diese Idee verbreitete sich über das "Deutsche Museum" in München (1906) und das "Palais de la Découverte" in Paris (1937) in mittlerweile über eintausend Science Centers der Welt. Bei der Eröffnung des "Museums für Verkehr und Technik", heute "Deutsches Technikmuse-um Berlin", im Jahre 1983 zeigte das Haus auch etwa 40 Experimente in seiner Experimen-tierabteilung "Versuchsfeld". 1990 zog die Abteilung unter dem neuen Namen "Spectrum" in ein separates Gebäude auf dem Museumsgelände. Bei dem Gebäude handelt es sich um das restaurierte Portalbauteil des ehemaligen Bahnhofshauses am Gleisdreieck. "Spektrum" be-deutet Anschauung oder Erscheinung. In diesen Namen geht die mediative und aktive An-schauung der Welt ebenso ein wie der Begriff der Spektralanalyse in der Physik und das fa-cettenreiche Spektrum der Wissenschaften überhaupt. Die Experimente sind nach modernen didaktischen und technischen Gesichtspunkten auf 1400 qm in vier Etagen eingerichtet.

V. Honorary Presidents were Professor Dr. Dr. h. c. K. Wezler and Profes sor Dr. Dr. h. c. H. E. Bock. The annual meeting of the SOCiety of Angiology was combined with the Symposium. It was held at the Physiological Institute of the University of TUBINGEN, an appropriate setting, since in the last century numerous scientists from this institute were engaged in special problems con nected with the vascular system and muscles. The topics of this meeting covered a wide field of vascular research; it was the aim of the organizers to the discuss the physiological, biochemical and morphological basis of the vascular muscles with clinicians and to stress some important aspects in the form of round table discussions. On the following pages the reader will therefore find numerous papers on spe cial basic problems of the physiology, biochemistry and morphology of vascu lar smooth muscle as well as on pathophysiological and pathological changes and papers about the clinical treatment of vascular disorders.
