The handbook on logic which the private lecturer G. B. Jäsche published in 1800 at the behest of Kant drawing on his records and also on lecture notes quickly became an integral part of Kant's works. It has found its way into all the complete editions and has again and again been used to interpret the ›Kritik der reinen Vernunft‹ (Critique of Pure Reason), which was written primarily with the logic as its guideline. Since the notes of Kant which Jäsche used were written over a period of about 40 years, his handbook reflects the fluctuations in Kant's thinking. Numerous contradictions contained in the text have their roots here. The circumstances described make a lexical interpretation of precisely this work necessary. The second volume of the Kant Index is the first attempt to provide an aid for a comparison of this nature. A completely lemmatized index of places where words can be found and concordance lines enable a quick overview of the text. Numerous separate indexes, a list of the reflections used by Jäsche as well as a list of typographical errors for Volume IX of the Academy edition provide further tools.

From the 15th to the beginning of the 18th century, texts of various origins show an intensive reception of the Church Fathers. The reappropriation of the patristic tradition developed mainly due to two historical and systematic factors: on the one hand under the conditions of the Reformation theology of the emerging denominations, as a result of which the »consensus patrum« guaranteed the authenticity of the »true church.» On the other hand, this reception of the Church Fathers became significant due to the tradition of the »philosophie perennis,» a tradition in the history of philosophy and theology which had begun in the 16th century. From antiquity to contemporary scholarship, the »consensus patrum« along with the »translatio sapientiae« were the prerequisites for this tradition.

The edition by Wilhelm Bolin and Friedrich Jodl was published by our company for the first time between 1903 and 1911 in 10 volumes. Among the works written in his youth, this is the first publication of two of them, both of which are indispensable for gaining insight into Feuerbach‹s (1804-1872) philosophical development: his dissertation from 1828 and the ›Gedanken über Tod und Unsterblichkeit‹ (Thoughts on Death and Immortality) published anonymously in 1830, a work which denied Feuerbach a university career for all of his life. The youthful works contain a chronological table as well as a bibliography of the works by and about Feuerbach. This reprint contains previously unpublished Feuerbach letters which have been added to the edition of the letters from and by Feuerbach, edited by W. Bolin and published in 1904. Among the letters which have been added there are 18 addressed to Arnold Ruge, and these provide some insight into the Left or Young Hegelians who were in the process of formation.

The early debates about the goals and the means of enlightening the common man are fascinating, since it was in these that for the first time ideas were expressed stating that in addition to economic enlightenment it would be necessary to create an entire educational movement which was aimed at changing the mentality of the farmers. This also meant a change in the literary instruments of the Enlightenment of the common people.

The introductory lecture held in the winter of 1809 discusses the road leading from a vague premonition of the truth to clear scientific knowledge. As is the case with all theories of science developed during the later years of a philosopher’s life, the ›Wissenschaftslehre 1810‹ (Epistemology 1810) is guided by the following basic idea: Knowledge is, in accordance with its fundamental character, an image of the absolute. It is in self-penetration that this knowledge rises from lower principles to continuously higher forms of reflection (“schemata”) of its regularity, whereby the individual versions up to 1814 all began with continuously higher standpoints. In the introductory lecture held in October of 1810, Fichte deals with the question of how it is possible to convey empirical, historical and psychic knowledge. The purpose of the ›Thatsachen des Bewusstseyns‹ (Facts of Consciousness) (1810/1811) is to lead from everyday consciousness to the scientific level, as did the Platner lectures held during his time in Jena. Based on the observation of factual-hypothetical fields of knowledge they rise to their principles, not yet however in their complete systematic context.
