Unfortunately the manuscript of the ›Wiener Logik‹ (Vienna Logic) was not discovered until all the plans for the Academy edition of Kant‹s collected works had almost been completed. The index volume attempts to show the significance of these little known lecture notes. Here as well, a lemmatized main index provides the entire language used in the lectures, a concordance facilitates the determination of places in the notes related to a certain subject, especially for those terms which are used often. About 20 pages of annotations establish the references to the ‹Kritik der reinen Vernunft‹; (Critique of Pure Reason), the reflections in the literary remains as well as the other transcripts and supplement the bibliographies of the Academy edition. In addition, the volume also corrects errors in this edition which alter the meaning in numerous places.

The Logik Blomberg (Blomberg Logic) goes back to the beginning of the seventies and is thus one of the earliest of the completely extant transcripts. Together with the first two volumes of the Kant Index, this index volume is an important resource for understanding the variety of references in the lecture notes, the compendium which Kant used and the reflections in the literary remains on logic. The repeatedly discussed questions pertaining to the reliability, the origins and the age determination of the transcripts are thus at least somewhat closer to being solved. With the aid of comprehensive lists of typographical errors and errors in transcription, emendations and conjectures, several hundred errors in Volume XXIV of the Academy edition have also been corrected on the basis of the transcript.

Along with his ›Neuen Organon‹; Lambert‘s ›Anlage zur Architectonic‹ (Architectonics) was one of the most influential philosophical works of the 18th century. The second and third part of this work in particular continue to deal with the problems of Wolff’s ontology – which Wolff and Baumgarten had already called ›architectonics‹ – while at the same putting them in a larger context. Kant in particular was influenced considerably by this. The objective of these indices, which were compiled using EDP methods, is to contribute to a better understanding of Lambert’s philosophy and to make and to enable a precise examination of its influence. To begin with, they contain the entire linguistic heritage, each part of which is in a main index, and list all the places each word is mentioned with the number of the page and the line. In view of the fact that there are not many reliable reference works for the 18th century, these indices are of interest not only to philosophers but also to literary scholars and philologists, since they document the language of that era unerringly and provide information on dates which can help with questions of historical language analysis. In addition, the volumes also contain several special indices which will serve special research interests. These include an index of persons as well as an index of the linguistic heritage in Latin, which is an important addition in view of the lack of lexica which are relevant to the Latin of the 18th century.

The philosophical method in the 17th and early 18th centuries was governed by the example of the mathematical method. This work shows that there were however varying types of methods concerned. The result was that when subjected to philosophical analysis, in their works Descartes, Leibniz and Wolff developed very different approaches to their methods. The ›Allgemeine Übersicht‹ (›Abhandlungen zur Erläuterung des Idealismus der Wissenschaftslehre‹); (Treatises on the Explanation of the Idealism of the Theory of Science) 2nd edition 1809, was published anonymously between November 1796 and July 1798 in the ›Philosophical Journal‹ edited by Niethammer and Fichte . Schelling intervened in the dispute surrounding Kantian philosophy in order to take a stand against the conservative Kantians and against Reinhold and to indicate his own position. The edition incorporates five different versions of the first printing and gives a bibliographical analysis of the literature which Schelling quoted or to which he alluded. Schelling’s scathing criticism of Schlossers anti-Kantian missives, which had caused a stir (Schiller: »miserable emptiness and platitude«, is also in the context of the Kant debate. The editorial report deals with this controversy. In his review entitled ›Ueber Offenbarung und Volksunterricht‹ (On Revelation and National Education) of Niethammer›s dissertation ›De Revelatione‹; Schelling enlarges upon Niethammer‹s criticism of the concept of revelation, which excludes this concept from the use of reason and restricts it to an educational usefulness. The subsequent atheism dispute was forthcoming.
