In the Spanish-speaking world, Krausismo has had a strong impact which can be traced back to the works of Karl Christian Friedrich Krause (1781–1832). Krause applied the philosophy of freedom of German idealism in a practical manner and in doing so formulated postulates which at the time of their writing (1825–1828) were much too modern to be able to gain wide acceptance but which are receiving increasing attention today: intergenerational justice, nature conservation, subsidiarity and federalism, world law cosmopolitanism etc. Dierksmeier‹s work paints a historical picture of how Krause created his own metaphysics of freedom by breaking away from Fichte and Schelling, his former teachers. The study integrates the wide range of research done internationally on Krause and presents the first argumentative reconstruction of Krause‹s philosophy in the world.

The theological discourse in Kant‹s works is integrated as an absolute justification into an overall philosophical concept and thus does not act independently of this. Based on this theory, the logic of the movement of thought in the theological discourse is rendered comprehensible through the movement of thought of the overall philosophical discourse. Thus it is shown that the transition from an affirmation of the existence of God, as it is phrased paradigmatically in the so-called ontotheological argument, to the point of an affirmation of God as a merely subjective concept of reason should be dated later than is generally assumed in recent research. It is also shown that the theological assertion remains in its function as a justification for authority. This results in an important suggestion for a new interpretation of the chapter on theology in the ›Critique of Pure Reason‹. It is confirmed that developmental history can make a substantial contribution to a deeper understanding of the substantive problems in the ›Critique of Pure Reason‹.

In this manner the objections of Fries were deprived of their force, and the transcendental standpoint was vindicated against Schelling. In the third ›Wissenschaftslehre‹ of 1804 and in the attached ›Prinzipien der Gottes-, Sitten- und Rechtslehre‹ Fichte completed his account of the self-development of appearances in connection with his philosophia prima. This volume also includes a few shorter writings on theology and pedagogy and concerning the concept of the Wissenschaftslehre.

This opens up an area of valuable experience which leads to the moral sense theory and to aesthetics. In this conflict between aesthetics and ethics, the author does a philosophical analysis of the term »feeling» and its complexity.

This volume shows Klein’s intense preoccupation with the impact of fears on childhood development. She believed that there was an early superego which is crueler and more primitive than the later superego. The question of how the early superego can develop into the superego postulated by Freud leads her to a clear differentiation between fear and guilt. This occurs in a gradual synthesis between the initially strongly polarized internal objects and a growing assimilation of the superego by the ego. The paranoid fear of the destruction of the ego is masked by fears related to the condition of the object. This gives rise to the desire for compensation and the ability to symbolize, which in turn makes creative processes possible. This volume also includes works which were published in ›The Freud-Klein Controversies 1941–45‹.

Weigel‹s Christological works met with interest outside of the German-speaking countries as well very early on. A Dutch translation of the homiletic pamphlet ›Von Betrachtung des Lebens Christi‹ (A Reflection on the Life of Christ), written in 1574, was published in 1647 and 1686. An English translation of the comprehensive work ›Vom Leben Christi‹ (On the Life of Christ), written in 1578, which advocated religious freedom and rejected the disputes between the confessions, in part with a purpose of polemic, was published in 1648. There are only extant fragments of the ›De vita Christi‹; which is in the appendix, a compilation in German based on various Weigel texts.

The ›Allgemeine Übersicht‹ (›Abhandlungen zur Erläuterung des Idealismus der Wissenschaftslehre‹); (Treatises on the Explanation of the Idealism of the Theory of Science) 2nd edition 1809, was published anonymously between November 1796 and July 1798 in the ›Philosophical Journal‹ edited by Niethammer and Fichte . Schelling intervened in the dispute surrounding Kantian philosophy in order to take a stand against the conservative Kantians and against Reinhold and to indicate his own position. The edition incorporates five different versions of the first printing and gives a bibliographical analysis of the literature which Schelling quoted or to which he alluded. Schelling’s scathing criticism of Schlossers anti-Kantian missives, which had caused a stir (Schiller: »miserable emptiness and platitude«, is also in the context of the Kant debate. The editorial report deals with this controversy. In his review entitled ›Ueber Offenbarung und Volksunterricht‹ (On Revelation and National Education) of Niethammer›s dissertation ›De Revelatione‹; Schelling enlarges upon Niethammer‹s criticism of the concept of revelation, which excludes this concept from the use of reason and restricts it to an educational usefulness. The subsequent atheism dispute was forthcoming.

Fichte’s general introductory lecture of October 1810, “On the Study of Philosophy;” has been preserved only in a transcription by August Twesten (discovered in 1999). It addresses the question, How is the communication of knowledge (including empirical, historical, and a priori knowledge) possible? This is also the concern of Fichte’s introductory lecture from the winter semester of 1811/12. The latter thematizes even more clearly the difference between the methods of the sciences. Three versions of this lecture are available (by Cauer, Schopenhauer, and an anonymous auditor), and all of three of these are included in this volume. Three different transcripts of the lectures on “The Facts of Consciousness” from the same semester (1811/12) are also available (by Cauer, Schopenhauer, and an anonymous auditor, the “Halle transcript”). Fichte’s own manuscript of these lectures has not survived. This circumstance, combined with the fact that each of these three transcripts has its own distinctive advantages and supplements the other two, justifies the publication of all three. They provide an objective presentation of the totality of knowledge and serve as the didactic presupposition for understanding the complex argumentation of the 1812 Wissenschaftslehre (see Volume II,13). The primary text contained in this volume is the transcript of the 1812 Wissenschaftslehre. Of the seven surviving transcripts of this lecture series, manuscript Yg 21 (from the library of Halle University) is here published in full as the “guiding text;” though it is supplemented by significant variations, as contained in the qualitatively next-best versions (Cauer, Itzig).
