Bernhard Riemanns Werk hat bis heute wesentlichen Einfluss auf die Entwicklung der Mathematik genommen. Seine Ideen sind überraschend modern und prägen die heutige mathematische Forschung. Es können nur einige Höhepunkte genannt werden: - H. Weils Kommentare über Riemanns Habilitationsschrift - C.L. Siegel über Riemanns Nachlass zur analytischen Zahlentheorie - W. Wirtingers berühmter Vortrag beim internationalen Mathematikerkongress Heidelberg 1904 über Riemanns Vorlesungen über die hypergeometrische Reihe. Neben diesen historischen Würdigungen von Riemanns Werk gibt es aktuelle Beiträge, insbesondere zur Mechanik und über "shock waves" von S. Chandrasekhar, N. Lebovitz und P. Lax. Raghavan Narasimhan gibt in einer ausführlichen Einleitung eine Würdigung, insbesondere des funktionentheoretischen Werks von Bernhard Riemann. Ferner sind Fotos und zahlreiche Nachträge zum Lebenslauf aufgenommen worden. Eine Bibliographie mit mehr als 800 Literaturstellen erarbeitet von E. Neuenschwander und W. Purkert rundet diese Werkausgabe ab.

Vor mehr als 15 Jahren hatte der erstgenannte Verfasser, L. CRE MER, durch Vermittlung von Professor Dr. E. MEYER Gelegenheit, im Auftrage des Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Lon don, eine "Propagation of structure-borne sound" betitelte Mono graphie [Sponsored Research (Germany) No. 1 (Series B)] über die Berechnung von Körperschallausbreitung in Fahrzeugen und Ge bäuden zu schreiben. Da diese nur in 60 Exemplaren vervielfältigte Monographie schnell vergriffen war und oft photokopiert wurde, entstand schon bald nach Erscheinen der Plan, sie - zunächst in deutscher Sprache - einem grösseren Kreise zugänglich zu machen. Der Verfasser musste sich dann dem Aufbau eines Lehrstuhls mit In stitut und anderen Aufgaben zuwenden, so dass er den Plan erst in den letzten Jahren wieder aufnehmen konnte. Da jedoch mittlerweile eine lange Zeit vergangen war, erschien es ratsam, das vorhandene Material beträchtlich zu erweitern und insbesondere Fragen der Mess technik und der Anwendung auf neuere Aufgaben der Lärmbekämp fung miteinzubeziehen. Er trat daher an den ,ehemaligen Oberingenieur seines Institutes, Dr. M. HECKL, mit der Bitte heran, sich mit ihm in die zu leistende Arbeit zu teilen. d. h. konkret in die Kapitel über I. His work and his inspiring scientific personality have profoundly influenced the development of the mathematical sciences up to the present time. His vision, his productive power and independent originality as a mathematical thinker, his versatility and breadth of interest made him a pioneer in many different mathematical fields. He was a unique personality, profoundly immersed in his work and totally dedicated to his science, a teacher and leader of the very highest order, inspiring and most generous, tireless and persistent in all of his efforts. To me, one of the few survivors of Hilbert's inner circle, it always has appeared most desirable that a biography should be published. Considering, however, the enormous scientific scope of Hilbert's work, it seemed to me humanly impossible that a single biographer could do justice to all the as pects of Hilbert as a productive scientist and to the impact of his radiant personality. Thus, when I learned of Mrs. Reid's plan for the present book I was at first skeptical whether somebody not thoroughly familiar with mathematics could possibly write an acceptable book. Yet, when I saw the manuscript my skepticism faded, and I became more and more enthusiastic about the author's achievement. I trust that the book will fascinate not only mathematicians but everybody who is interested in the mystery of the origin of great scientists in our society.

This book summarizes the papers presented at the International Symposium on vascular smooth muscle, organized in combination with the XXV Interna tional Congress of Physiological Sciences by the German Society of Angiology e. V. Honorary Presidents were Professor Dr. Dr. h. c. K. Wezler and Profes sor Dr. Dr. h. c. H. E. Bock. The annual meeting of the SOCiety of Angiology was combined with the Symposium. It was held at the Physiological Institute of the University of TUBINGEN, an appropriate setting, since in the last century numerous scientists from this institute were engaged in special problems con nected with the vascular system and muscles. The topics of this meeting covered a wide field of vascular research; it was the aim of the organizers to the discuss the physiological, biochemical and morphological basis of the vascular muscles with clinicians and to stress some important aspects in the form of round table discussions. The Xlth European Symposium on Calcified Tissues was held at Hotel Marienlyst, Elsinore, Denmark, May 25-29,1975. The main topics were: 1. cellular calcium transport, 2. vitamin D, and 3. osteoporosis. Seventy six of the submitted papers were selected for verbal presentation, and these papers are the basis of the articles found in this book. We hope that the book, which also appears as a supplement to CALCIFIED TISSUE RESEARCH has a form which will be adopted by organizers of future symposia of this series. Von dieser "Biindel-Nagelung" habe ich so viele ausgezeichnete Ergebnisse gesehen, daB ich Herrn HACKETHAL anregte, seine Methode in einer Monographie darzustellen. Wenn heute jemand eine neue Marknagelung empfehlen will, dann muB ein Ver gleich mit den bisher iiblichen Verfahren am Anfang stehen. HACKETHALS Kritik an den gebrauchlichen Methoden der Marknagelung solI diese nicht entwerten, sondern nur ihre Grenzen bestimmen. Die vorgelegten experimentellen und kli nischen Untersuchungen iiber die Grundlagen der Biindel-Nagelung haben prin zipielle Bedeutung fUr aIle Osteosynthesemethoden. Besonders eingehend werden die Gefahren jeder Markraumschienung, auch die der Biindel-Nagelung, bespro chen und Wege zu ihrer Vermeidung gewiesen. Zur sicheren Verhiitung einer Fett embolie wird nur in Blutleere genagelt. Jeder, der eine groBe Zahl offen genagelter Frakturen iibersieht, ist erschreckt iiber das groBe Infektionsrisiko (s. S. 45). Hieraus zieht HACKETHAL die bemerkenswerte Folgerung, unter Mithilfe eines neuartigen Repositionsapparates und unter moderner Bildverstarkerkontrolle nur geschlossen zu nageln. Hilfsgerate sind immer gerechtfertigt, wenn sie zu vermehrter Sicherheit fUhren. Der groBte Teil der Monographie befaBt sich mit der Praxis der Biindel-Nagelung. Hier werden Indikation und Technik genauestens besclnieben. Moge das Buch dazu beitragen, daB auch andere Chirurgen die Methode der Biindel-Nagelung kennen und schatzen lernen.

Bei der Vorbereitung eines Lehrbuches der Differentialdiagnose innerer Krankheiten kam mir das Original der vorliegenden Bearbeitung zu Händen, das wie die meisten englischen Monographien bei uns ganz unbekannt geblieben war. Ich hatte die Absicht gehabt, in ähnlicher Weise das Gebiet zu behandeln und fand hier meinen Plan von einem amerikanischen Kliniker und Forscher in nahezu vollkommener Weise ausgeführt. Das Studium des Buches fesselte mich ungemein; nach einigem Zögern gab ich meinen Plan auf. Hier lag schon alles vor, wie ich es mir gedacht hatte. Die Urteile über die Berechtigung, Differentialdiagnostik in besonderen Lehrbüchern zu behandeln, sind sehr schwankend. Manche klinische Lehrer halten solche Bücher für überflüssig und sehen sie als unerwünschte Erleichterung des Studiums an, die dem medizinischen Denken und Mühen des Anfängers Gefahr bringen; in den Lehrbüchern der inneren Medizin findet sich ja auch alles auf die Differentialdiagnose Bezügliche besprochen. Das gilt aber nur insofern, als alles, was die physikalischen Ergebnisse der Untersuchung be trifft, behandelt ist. Das wird in unserem Buche vorausgesetzt. Aber der Arzt, der dies alles beherrscht, kann doch ein schlechter Diagnostiker bleiben, wenn er es nicht versteht, die durch die Untersuchung gewonnenen Befunde zu deuten und miteinander zu einem befriedigenden Ganzen zu vereinen. Dazu gehört eine ausgereifte klinische Erfahrung und die Fähigkeit, konstruktiv zu denken.

Auszug: ...Da sie ausserdem in Stil, Sprache, Metrik und Stimmung Beziehungen aufweisen, so konnte man geneigt sein, einen Verfasser fur beide Texte anzunehmen, d. h. W dem Dichter von K S K2 B zuzuschreiben; was ja nach allem Vorangegangenen nur naturlich ware. Allein W und S wurden zu einer Zeit benannt, wo man in ihren wahren Inhalt noch weniger Einsicht hatte als in den der anderen Lieder. Im Gegensatze zu Kt K2 B sind S und W interpoliert uberliefert, und die Auffassung musste irregeleitet werden durch Worte in den unechten Teilen, solange diese nicht reinlich ausgesondert wurden. Das sahen wir an S 39--47, die sogar das asthetische Urteil begrunden halfen, und auch an W konnen wir es beobachten. Weiter aber wird sich herausstellen, dass ein inhaltlicher Zusammenhang zwischen W und S erst auf Grund der Einfugung auch des ersteren Gedichtes in unseren Odoakerzyklus erkennbar und nachweisbar ist. W muss also zunachst ganz fur sich betrachtet werden. In der Uberlieferung umfasst der Text 115 Verse; er steht auf fol. 76b--78a des Exeterbuches, wenige Blatter vor S. Ein Abdruck des Ganzen erscheint uberflussig, da eine Reihe von Versen als Interpolationen anerkannt oder doch leicht zu erweisen sind. Diese Interpolationen haben, wie hier vorausgenommen sei, das eigentliche Gedicht unangetastet gelassen. Wie S 1--64 im wesentlichen den echten Kern bietet, so enthalt W 8--57 anscheinend einheitlich den uns erreichbaren Bestand ursprunglichen Materials, abgesehen naturlich von Textverderbnissen.
