Wenn es überhaupt Wiederentdeckungen gibt, dann ist vielleicht mit der Retrospektive der Arbeiten von Peter Hutchinson im Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck und diesem umfangreichen Buch eine der wichtigsten in den letzten Jahrzehnten verbunden. An vielen prominenten Ausstellungen zur Etablierung der Land Art beteiligt, vermitteln die fotografischen Dokumente seiner frühen Arbeiten sehr schön deren formale Entstehungsprinzipien. Diese lassen sich mit den Schlagworten Wissenschaftlichkeit und Zeichenhaftigkeit charakterisieren und verströmen dementsprechend noch heute jene spezielle Coolness, die mit der amerikanischen Camp-Ideologie verbunden wurde. Der in dieser Ideologie angelegte Umschlag in eine Romantic Attitude lässt sich jedoch vor allem an Peter Hutchinson studieren - ganz im Gegensatz zur Werkentwicklung seiner langjährigen Freunde Dennis Oppenheim oder Peter Smithson, denen vor allem das wissenschaftliche Zusammenspiel allerlei entropischer Fragen vordringlich blieb. Hutchinson dagegen geht pragmatischer vor und versöhnt en passant formale Setzungen mit einer assoziativen, freien und radikalen Arbeitsform, wenn er etwa zunächst ein Seil in die Luft wirft, um dann in den Umrissen seiner Landung Blumen zu pflanzen. Es kommt in diesen Arbeiten, wie auch den Collagen, Fotoarbeiten und Objekten der letzten 20 Jahre, zu einer Erweiterung der Land Art ins Utopische und Ökologische. Schliesslich ist der Verweis auf die 'Erträumten Paradiese' ein Beleg dafür, dass viele der Arbeiten von Hutchinson an der Schnittstelle Kunst- und Natur-Erfahrung angesiedelt sind. If there is such a thing as rediscovery, then perhaps this retrospective of works by Peter Hutchinson, at the Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck, along with the accompanying catalogue, constitutes one of the most important of the past few decades. Involved as he was in establishing Earth Art, the photographic documents of his early works beautifully convey the formal principles of their origins. These principles can be encompassed by the terms scientific and emblematic and correspondingly exude that very coolness associated with the American expressive camp behaviour. The sudden change towards a romantic attitude, inherent in this ideology, can be studied above all, in the work of Peter Hutchinson–in stark contrast to the development of works by his long-standing friends and associates Dennis Oppenheim or Peter Smithson, whose creative analysis of the scientific conjunction of all manner of entropic questions remained a primary concern in their work. Hutchinson by contrast, demonstrates a more pragmatic, artistic approach, reconciling en passant formal arrangements with an associative, free, and radical way of working, for example, when he throws a rope into the air and then proceeds to plant flowers in the impression it leaves behind on the ground. »… und heute sind es 5000«Diesen Sommer hat Peter Dreher seinen 80. Geburtstag gefeiert. Das vielfältige künstlerische Werk des in Mannheim geborenen Emeritus der Kunstakademie Karlsruhe findet seinen Höhepunkt in einer seit 1974 kontinuierlich fortgeführten Serie. Die in Öl auf Leinwand oder Malkarton jeweils 25 x 20 cm grossen Tafeln zeigen stets ein einzelnes Glas unter dem die Serie zusammenfassenden Titel »Tag um Tag guter Tag«. Anlässlich seiner Schenkung von über 400 Arbeiten aus dieser Serie an das Museum für Neue Kunst in Freiburg schreibt der Künstler jetzt in einem Beitrag: »Eine Vorstellung, die ich Ende der Sechziger-, Anfang der Siebzigerjahre hatte, war, ein Bild zu malen, das unsichtbar ist. Das ist natürlich eine unmögliche Vorgabe. Eine Vorgabe, die nicht anders umsetzbar scheint, als das möglichst Einfache zu malen … Das Einfachste, was es gibt, ist die unausweichliche Realität, die uns umgibt. Ich hatte immer eine Scheu vor sinnbeladenen, erzählerischen Bildern. Doch das einzelne Bild verliert den Bezug zur Realität, sobald es wiederholt wird. Es ist nur noch Malerei. So kam ich auf die Idee, dieselbe Sache immer wieder zu malen … Ich weiss es noch ganz genau: Das Konzept zu der Glas-Serie – es war April 1974, und ich lag in der heissen Badewanne – war innerhalb von einer Sekunde da. Ich wusste plötzlich genau: Es muss ein Gegenstand sein, und dieser Gegenstand muss sich in immer gleichem Abstand zu mir befinden, in immer gleichem, künstlichem Licht … Damals dachte ich, ich mache fünf, sechs Bilder in dieser Art, ohne das Motiv zu wechseln, damit man versteht, was gemeint ist. Thinking About Trees Peter Fischer and his team have gathered about 100 works for the exhibition and the volume ABOUT TREES. Be it the huge rags stumps by Berlinde De Bruyckere, shimmering waxen and wrapped in giant rags, or the oil painting of a sparse forest with fragments of a Corbusier building in the background by Peter Doig; the mighty, upside-down black-and-white photograph of an oak tree by Rodney Graham or the picture of a detonated fruit tree by Michael Sailstorfer: these works of art always depict the tree as a diversely interpretable motif. In particular, it is about how the subject tree in a symbolic way »may raise fundamental questions of existence«. Art, in contrast to natural sciences and religion, has an advantage as it only has to raise questions, not give answers. Thus, it can reveal the tree as »a symbol, mirror and object of projection«, demonstrate how it represents life and/or death. Trees, however, are also suitable as a theme for »clashes and inspirations«, since it is lends itself to trace the story of human relationship with nature in an exemplary way, while, at the same time, pointing out that the dichotomy between nature and culture need not necessarily lead to destruction. According to Robert Macfarlane in his contribution »Buchenhain«, from a branch or the crown of a tree, man views the world not only in a liberated way, but he can even feel safe in it, as a kind of hybrid of »tree and man«. Accordingly, as the editor of the volume Peter Fischer points out, the tree is also ideally suited as a »symbol of imaginary worlds and embodiment of actual worlds«, for instance when it begins to speak like in fairy tales, formulating its own laws; and "long-lasting and durable, trees also have the ability to grant a specific identity to their location and environment. As a striking object, the tree contributes to the individual image of a place. It bears witness to the history of its location. »Minimalism in Germany«In 1967, Peter Roehr and Paul Maenz curated the exhibition »Serial Formations« at University of Frankfurt’s studio gallery, one of the first ever exhibitions on Minimal Art in Germany. Within the framework of the exhibition series »Minimalism in Germany«, launched in 2005, Daimler Art Collection is attempting to re-stage this historically significant presentation. At that time, it had comprehensively summarized current international minimalist trends, and juxtaposed them with positions by German artists. The selection criterion for the 62 works in total by 48 artists was the principle of serial order as a visual aspect of images and objects. The concepts they were based on, however, could be quite diverse and even contradictory. The European Zero movement was represented, as well as American Minimal and Concept Art, aspects of Nouveau Réalisme, Pop and Op Art – Paul Maenz wrote in the accompanying catalog, »the ambition of ›Serielle Formationen‹ was to inform and to identify the differences between seemingly similar art phenomena«.
