Anti-Semitism was a major feature of both late Tsarist and Stalinist as well as neo-Stalinist Russian politics. What does this legacy entail for the emergence of post-Soviet politics? What are the sources, ideologies, permutations, and expressions of anti-Semitism in recent Russian political life? Who are the main protagonists and what is their impact on society? This book shows that anti-Semitism is alive and well in contemporary Russia, in general, and in her political life, in particular. The study focuses on anti-Semitism in political groups, mass media and religious organizations from the break-up of the Soviet Union until shortly before the elections to the fourth post-Soviet State Duma which saw the entry of a major new nationalist grouping, Rodina (Motherland), into the Russian parliament. The author analyzes various “justifications” for anti-Semitism, its manifestations and its ups and downs during this period. The book chronicles Russian federal and regional elections, which served as a “reality check” for the ultra-nationalists. Several sections are devoted to the role of anti-Semitism in political associations, including marginal neo-Nazi groups, “mainstream” nationalist parties, and the successor organizations of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. A special section covers the financial sources for post-Soviet anti-Semitic publications. The author considers anti-Semitism within a wider context of religious and ethnic intolerance in Russian society. Likhachev, as a result, compiles a “Who is Who” of Russian political anti-Semitism. His book will serve as a reliable compendium and obligatory starting point for future research on post-Soviet xenophobia and ultra-nationalist politics.

With the help of discourse analysis and ideology critique, this study establishes a theoretical framework to analyse African nationalism in apartheid and post-apartheid South Africa. Following the constructivist school of thought, the study adopts the assumption that nations are "imagined communities" which are built on "invented traditions". It shows that historically and analytically, there are two distinct concepts of nationalism: "constitutional" and "ethnic" nationalism. These concepts can be retraced in South Africa where they form the central antagonism of black political thought. The study of post-apartheid African nationalism is placed in its historical perspective by focusing on the major milestones of African National Congress' discourse before and during apartheid. It demonstrates that throughout its history, the ANC was characterized by the rivalry between concepts of "constitutional" and "ethnic" nationalism. While the former concept found its counterpart in Charterism, the latter was adopted by African nationalism. Though the ANC in its majority embraced Charterism, it continually played with the appeal of an exclusive, racial nationalism. The theoretical and historical contextualisation of the study allows for the investigation of the various dimensions of current ANC discourse on African nationalism. The study analyses different concepts of nationalism employed by the ANC and compares these models to those discussed in academic literature. It finds that in post-apartheid South Africa, the historical dichotomy of Africanist and Charterist nationalism persists within the ANC. While early concepts of nationalism like Mandela's "rainbow nation" and Mbeki's "I am an African" paid tribute to Charterism, the discourses on the "African Renaissance" and Mbeki's "two-nation" address at least leave openings for Africanist interpretations. Furthermore, the analysis shows that nationalism is not only a product of discourse but also one of material conditions. The study provides evidence that it is not only the ANC that hijacks African nationalism in order to mobilize their electorate and push through unpopular policy choices. Also, there are compelling material reasons for some South Africans to adopt a nationalist agenda. This is demonstrated by the new "black" bourgeoisie that mediates the gap between rich and poor as well as black and white. African nationalism in this regard serves to legitimate domination and existing relations of inequality. It affirms an African elite while neither uplifting the majority of African poor nor threatening the material privileges of white South Africans. Lastly, the study gives an outlook on the political implications of a resurrected nationalism. The effects can be analysed according to the two promises of nationalism: superiority over "outsiders" and equality between "insiders". This book explains why Russia's "War on Terror" shows little sign of success. It provides first-hand accounts of recent developments in Chechnya, and is supplemented with thematic summaries as well as numerous documents. In the manipulated election of October 2003, the favorite of the Kremlin, Akhmad Kadyrov, was made President of the Chechen Republic only to be killed seven months later in a terrorist attack. While a political settlement is urgently needed and Kadyrov's death is to be regretted, evidence shows that the 2003 "presidential election" bore no relation to a sincere political solution. The President was imposed on Chechnya and had little legitimacy among the Chechen people. The book describes how violence in the Northern Caucasus attributed to gangsters, war lords, Wahhabists, al Qaedists, and to hatred of Russia has been reciprocated by "law enforcement" agencies with "cleansing operations", "disappearances", and targeted assassinations. The reciprocity of violence has maintained the scale of lawlessness, and further diminished the prospects of solution. The book is an invitation to the Russian public and the international community to launch a frank discussion on the situation in the Northern Caucasus in order to find a way out from a bloody crisis that has been lingering on for more than a decade now.

It focuses on the legal concepts affected by the Bush Administration’s treatment of alleged enemy combatants after September 11, 2001 by analyzing three lawsuits filed with United States Courts. The three cases—Rumsfeld v. Padilla, Hamdi v. Rumsfeld, and Rasul v. Bush—so far have been the only cases reviewed by the highest court of the nation, the United States Supreme Court.

This book analyzes the ideologies of politicized Orthodox Christianity in today Russia including fundamentalism, pan-Slavism, neo-Eurasianism, Orthodox communism and nationalism. Apart from textual analysis, the volume provides a description of the specific subculture of political Orthodoxy, i.e. its language, symbols, art, mass media, hangouts and dresscode. This study represents the first scholarly examination of these topics. Unlike other publications on the politicization of Orthodoxy, it is focused not on the political ambitions of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), but on political movements ideologically based on their own interpretations of the Orthodox doctrine, often contravening the canonical version. The book demonstrates that the “political Orthodox” or “Orthodox patriots” are a specific branch of believers who frequently do not practice Orthodoxy properly, inventing, instead, their own quasi-Orthodox rituals. The volume shows that the ROC is not responsible for such religious politicization and that the community of the political Orthodox is rather guided by religiously oriented lay intellectuals. The book provides a brief analysis of this intellectual community. Finally, the volume demonstrates that, even in the absence of significant electoral achievements, some religio-political Orthodox movements—namely; fundamentalists and nationalists—have been able to gain public support at the grassroots level. They have been able to infiltrate larger and more moderate political organizations thus contributing to a general “Orthodoxization” of Russian political discourse.

This book is an attempt to highlight the meaning of think-tanks and public intellectuals in the world of politics. Think-tanks have been acting as political agents for the last three decades mostly in the background. However, the importance of these think-tanks in the world of politics, especially in disseminating ideas and developing governmental projects, has been rarely discussed. How are these institutions embedded in socio-political projects of our governments? What is the role of the single public intellectual who works for the think-tank? Do they influence or even set governmental agendas on certain issues? Further, to what degree do they influence public opinion? The author demonstrates the central role of two think-tanks in Great Britain–Demos and the Institute of Public Policy Research (IPPR)–and their respective public intellectuals in helping define a project for the New Left and the Labour Party in the early 90s. He further demonstrates in depth how both think-tanks became part of Tony Blair’s ambitions for a ‘project’ after his succession to power in ’97; how both repositioned themselves politically along the way, and how both have been playing into the minutiae of politics since then. In-depth research including 29 interviews with think-tankers and political advisers makes this book a lively insight into the world of think-tanks and the ‘battle of ideas’ in Great Britain after the Cold War. Blank goes back all the way to the analyses of Thatcherism in the Marxism Today circle and the debates of the British Left around alternative projects from New Times to a British Third Way.

Since 1 January 2007, Moldova has been a direct neighbour of the European Union. Nonetheless, Moldova and the Russia-dominated geopolitics of the Black Sea region receive still relatively little attention in the West. This is all the more surprising as there remain a number of consequential political divisions and unresolved conflicts in the area. One of them is the Transnistria conflict in Moldova. This book is a contribution to the, so far, small research and policy agenda on Moldova, and includes findings of several research trips to Moldova, Transnistria and their neighbouring countries. At first, the study reassesses the Transnistria conflict. Contrary to widely held assumptions, this conflict is found to be mainly based on a clash of elites and geopolitical interests rather than on ethnic tensions. The second part of the book analyses the interests, official position, actual impact and potential role of the EU in Moldova's internal separatist conflict and its related external tensions with Russia. So far, the EU has had a limited involvement in the conflict resolution efforts and in the international relations of Moldova. This book concludes that it is becoming increasingly important and possible for the EU to get effectively involved in this region, but that the scope of EU activities in Moldova and Transnistria depends on the country’s relations with, and on the actions in this area of, the United States and Russia. At its end, the study offers recommendations for future EU policies directed at Moldova.

In the early 1990s, a group of supporters of a revival of old-Russian pagan beliefs started to call itself “Internal Predictor of the USSR.” They, later, initiated a political movement named “Towards God’s Rule” and the so-called Conceptual Party “Unification.” They assert that their doctrine of Russian society’s security, called “Dead Water;” will cure all wounds of Russia like magic, and guarantee the well-being and prosperity of the Russian people. The expressions of modern Russian neo-paganism are usually considered to be marginal and insignificant phenomena. However, the group of high-ranking military men, university teachers and converted communist functionaries analyzed here has succeeded to raise considerable attention and respect for pagan ideology in Russian society. This has made a certain impression on a number of representatives of the Russian political elite including deputies of the State Duma and employees of the special services. The peculiar version of neo-pagan ideology analyzed here is a result of a reformulation of Stalinist ideology. It has cut off its Marxist roots, and incorporates religious mysticism, the theory of a worldwide conspiracy, some fantastic assertions about Russian culture, various borrowings from Nazism, references to the wisdom of the Koran and a conceptual approach to modern theories of management complemented with para-scientific economic theorizing. The exotic doctrine of the “Internal Predictor” has had a certain resonance in post-Soviet Russia. After a noisy propaganda campaign before the elections to the State Duma in 2003, the movement propagating “Dead Water” was extensively covered by the Russian press. However, it has not been the subject of indepth research so far.
