In der Dominikanischen Republik hat die Knappheit an kultivierbarem und fruchtbarem Land in tieferen Lagen ein Vordringen des landwirtschaftlichen Anbaus in die ökologisch labileren Gebirgsregionen mit besonders erosions- und degradationsgefährdeten Böden nach sich gezogen. Gerade auf diesen marginalen Standorten wird der nachhaltige Umgang mit den natürlichen Ressourcen mittel- und langfristig überlebensnotwendig und somit entscheidend für die Zukunft bäuerlichen Wirtschaftens sein. In der vorliegenden Studie wurde der Landnutzungswandel im oberen Einzugsgebiet des Río Yaque del Norte exemplarisch für eine Gebirgsregion in den Tropen analysiert. Auf Grundlage multitemporaler Satellitenbilder wurde unter Einbezug von Luftbildern und Geländedaten die Landnutzung klassifiziert und eine Karte erstellt, welche für die Klassen vegetationsfreie Fläche, Wald, Agroforst und Landwirtschaft die Veränderung in dem Zeitraum von 1986 bis 2000 beschreibt.

Tropische Ökosysteme stehen immer stärker unter agrarischer Nutzung. Die ursprüngliche Vegetation ist nahezu verschwunden. Die Orientierung am Weltmarkt spielt dabei eine zentrale Rolle. Ein Beispiel ist die Côte d’Ivoire; die mittlerweile der weltweit grösste Kakaoproduzent ist. Claudia Sültmann beschäftigt sich u.a. mit den Veränderungen der naturräumlichen Ausstattung des tropischen Südens der Côte d’Ivoire (Westafrika). Seit der Unabhängigkeit des westafrikanischen Staates 1960 ist eine Ausdehnung des Plantagenanbaus von Cash-Crops (v.a. Kakao, Kaffee, Kautschuk, Ölpalme) und ein Rückgang der Subsistenzwirtschaft, besonders im Hauptsiedlungsgebiet im Südwesten des Landes, zu verzeichnen. Neben der Zerstörung der ursprünglichen Vegetation ist mit dem Taï Nationalpark auch ein geschütztes Gebiet von anthropogenen Eingriffen bedroht. Durch die Auswertung von zwei Satellitenbildern aus den Jahren 1986 (Landsat-5 TM) und 2001 (Landsat-7 ETM+) sind sieben Landbedeckungsklassen identifiziert worden. Der anschliessende Vergleich der Datensätze gibt Aufschluss über die Veränderungen der Landnutzung in den letzten 15 Jahren (Change Detection-Analysis). Hervorzuheben ist die extreme Dezimierung der Waldklasse (Primär- und Sekundärwald, Aufforstungen), die starke Expansion der Kakao- und Kaffeeanbauflächen und damit einhergehend die Ausdehnung der Siedlungsflächen.

Azerbaijan’s parliamentary elections in November 2005 became an arena where domestic and international actors jostled for influence and control. This book highlights the role of international observers in the election process, and presents in-depth assessments of the pre- and post-election situation in Azerbaijan. The 2005 parliamentary elections are of special interest for several reasons. First, oil-rich Azerbaijan offers interesting insights on the relationship between energy wealth and democratisation. Second, the elections in Azerbaijan received considerable international attention. They were seen as a test case of whether the wave of regime change that had affected Georgia, Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan would spread to other countries in the region. Third, for the first time, a large number of Russian observers served within the Office for Democratic Institution and Human Rights (ODIHR) election observation mission. Finally, the case of Azerbaijan also highlights the methodological and technical aspects of election observation. Among other things, there was extensive – and arguably problematic – use of exit polls. Higher education has become a mega-topic in both political and scientific debate. Developments in systems of higher education and changes in the governance of this field have been discussed in the literature. Such changes are brought about by collective actors within institutional settings. The present volume directs attention at Social Democratic governments in Sweden and in Germany, specifically in North-Rhine Westphalia in the latter case, and at the policies of higher education they have enacted from the mid-1960s to the year 2000. The empirical basis for this study is a qualitative analysis of such policy documents as inaugural speeches, governmental bills and recommendations of expert groups. The focus of the policies has shifted during the decades that were analysed from an input- to an output-orientation and from addressing issues of class to addressing those of gender segregation. These shifts are discussed against the background of a governmentís need for legitimation and the impact of intermediate actors on policy development.

Tropical rain forests are the most complex, varied, and species-rich terrestrial ecosystems on earth. However, these unique forests are more and more threatened by human activities. About half of the originally forested area has been deforested in the past decades and the pressure on today’s remaining rain forests is still growing. The German-Indonesian research project STORMA (“Stability of Rainforest Margins in Indonesia”) analyses the causes, circumstances, and consequences of rain forest conversion. In its survey area in Central Sulawesi (Indonesia), vast areas of intact rain forest still exist but are currently facing increasing exploitation by the rural population. Especially the expansion of cultivation area for cocoa and maize represents a major threat for local rain forests. Remote sensing plays an important role in the examination of rain forest loss, because it allows the regionalisation and quantification of spatial developments at different scales. In his book, Christian Knieper gains information about land cover and land cover change in Central Sulawesi on the basis of a Landsat 7/ETM+ time series. He applies a modern object-oriented approach which allows the analysis of non-spectral features (e.g. shape, spatial relations, thematic data) and goes beyond the pure isolated statistical examination of each pixel’s spectral values offered by traditional remote sensing techniques. The gathered results on land cover change provide essential information for socio-economic as well as ecological research activities within STORMA.

The findings of this study illustrate how the process of post-Soviet economic transition engenders, among others, significant spatial industrial restructuring. In addition to well-known changes in the characteristics of individual enterprises, these spatial aspects of restructuring can be key determinants of a firm's performance. Moreover, the effects of spatial restructuring appear as influencing both industry-specific and location-specific characteristics of firms. A number of previous studies have discussed overall economic structural changes in Kazakhstan, but only few highlight the regional-industrial perspective. A focus on regional issues is particularly relevant in this case, since Kazakhstani economic development was uneven and industrial activities are concentrated in certain geographical areas. The present study contributes to the existing literature through its perspective on regional development, at the industrial level. This is the first comprehensive analysis of regional industrial development in Kazakhstan based on research into individual firms. The study fills a gap by way analysing trends of industrial location in Kazakhstan in connection with characteristics of particular enterprises – factors the consideration of which should play a prominent role in the formulation of future regional and managerial policies.

Das Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), 2001 beschreibt für das letzte Jahrhundert eine globale Erwärmung um 0.6°C. Diese globale Temperatur-zunahme ist am stärksten durch die klimatische Entwicklung in der Nordhemisphäre, insbesondere in den arktischen und subarktischen Breiten gekennzeichnet. In der vorliegenden Untersuchung wird die mittlere Ausprägung und raum-zeitliche Entwicklung der Klimaelemente Temperatur und Niederschlag in Alaska im Zeitraum 1961-2003 analysiert. Wegen des heterogenen Klimas mit maritimen, kontinentalen und arktischen Anteilen wird Alaska sowohl als Gesamtraum als auch unterteilt in thermisch-hygrisch homogene Regionen betrachtet. Zur Ermittlung der mittleren Ausprägung, der zeitlichen Variabilität und der Entwicklung der Klimaelemente werden die Temperatur- und Niederschlagsreihen ausgewählter alaskanischer Klimastationen hinsichtlich ihrer mittleren Ausprägungen, Extrema, Anomalien und linearen Trends für den Untersuchungszeitraum statistisch untersucht. Eine flächendeckende raum-zeitliche Betrachtung erfolgt anschliessend unter Ver-wendung eines GIS-gestützten multiplen Regressionsmodells nach dem Prinzip einer Klimaregionalisierung. Als klimaanalytischer und methodischer Vergleichsdatensatz dient der für Alaska relevante Ausschnitt eines globalen Klimamodells des Potsdamer Instituts für Klimafolgenforschung (PIK). Aufgrund der Ergebnisse der raum-zeitlichen Entwicklung der Klimaelemente er-geben sich weiterführende Fragen zu den Ursachen der Klimavariabilität, zur allgemeinen Methodik der Modellierung des komplexen Klimasystems und einer dadurch möglichen Klimaprognose sowie den Auswirkungen der beobachteten und potentiell zu erwartenden Änderungen der klimatischen und der daran gekoppelten ökologischen Verhältnisse in Alaska. Die Entwicklung des Klimas in den arktischen und subarktischen Breiten ist sowohl regional als auch global für die Funktion und Ausprägung des Klimasystems von herausragender Bedeutung.
