Raks Sharki, der orientalische Tanz, gehört zu den faszinierendsten Exporten des Nahen Ostens. Er erfordert grosses Geschick und wird von Männern wie Frauen, von jungen wie alten Menschen getanzt. Der Raks Sharki ist ein so wichtiger Bestandteil der orientalischen Kultur, dass eine Hochzeit oder andere Feierlichkeit ohne ihn nicht komplett ist. Frühe Geschichtsschreiber haben sowohl in Phönizien (dem heutigen Libanon) als auch im alten Ägypten Tänze beschrieben, die den charakteristischen Bewegungen des Raks Sharki ähneln. Seitdem floriert der Tanz hauptsächlich in Ägypten, im Libanon und in der Türkei. Es gibt aber in ganz Nordafrika bis nach Marokko und im Osten bis nach Afghanistan Tänze, bei denen Hüften und Rumpf wie beim Raks Sharki geschwungen werden. Auf dieser CD werden Kairo und Beirut als wichtigste Zentren des orientalischen Tanzes vorgestellt. Die berühmte Raks-Sharki-Tänzerin und -Lehrerin Jalilah (Lorraine Zamora Chamas) ist bekannt als Vorreiterin der „Nouvelle Vague“ des orientalischen Tanzes. Sie hat mit Piranha Records eine Serie von sechs höchst erfolgreichen Alben namens „Jalilah’s Raks Sharki“ produziert, orientalische Tanzmusik, aufgenommen in Ägypten und im Libanon. Einige Stücke auf dieser CD wurden dieser Serie entnommen – wunderschöne Musik, die sowohl zum Zuhören als auch zum Tanzen anregt. The result was the biggest crisis, a German automobile company had ever faced. Mercedes-Benz is a high-class automobile company. Its products stand for luxury, reliability and dependability. But high-class cars are expensive and only affordable for the richer part of society. To keep pace with the fast developing automobile industry all over the world, Mercedes-Benz decided to invent car that reunites all three values, the company embraces. This car ¿ the Mercedes-Benz A-Class ¿ should have another important feature: It is affordable for the middle class. With this car, Mercedes was approaching a new market segment and therefore new target audiences. A campaign, that fits the new car in the overall Mercedes image, was crucial. In May 1996 Mercedes Benz started its huge advertising campaign ¿ almost one and a half years prior to the official product launch on October 18th 1997. More than 100 million Euro will this launching campaign cost the company. Despite that the campaign only ran in the European market, the Mercedes-Benz brand and this specific campaign caught international attention. Newspapers from all over the world accompanied the A-Class until its official launch. These newspapers were also there, when the crisis occurred, that almost harmed the company on a long-term basis. Right after the launch, the car, that was supposed to be innovative, reliable and safe, failed in the so called ¿moose-test¿. After almost two years of positive media coverage, a flood of criticism followed. Due to the high level of awareness for the car, the public was now also aware of the safety issues the Mercedes A-Class had. What followed was another campaign. The goals were to safe the image of the company, to deal with the crisis and to re-launch the A-Class half a year later. The campaign analysis explains why Mercedes had to take the approach and step into the market segment of small cars. In addition, the launching campaign and its four phases: Big Bang, New Perspectives, New Choices, and New Experiences, will be explained in detail. The second part will cover the crisis that occurred after the launch of the A-Class and the re-launch in 1998. Finally, the analysis will show whether this incident harmed the image of the company on a long-term basis, and how advertising influenced this development.

This book maps out the history of Czechoslovak linguistic and social practices directed at Roma during the communist period. It explains how contemporary Czech society has come to understand the Romani population in terms of inherited social, medical and juridical ideas. Rather than focusing on the Roma people as an object of analysis, the book problematizes assumed notions of “Gypsiness” and “Czechness” in mainstream society by highlighting the role of different socialist discourses in constructing images of Roma as socially deviant and abnormal. By uncovering the lines of continuity in the intersections of ethnic discrimination, social deviance and citizenship from the 1950s to the collapse of communism, this book comes to terms with a variety of questions that have not yet been adequately addressed in the literature: What underlying assumptions informed the socialist regime’s understanding of “Gypsiness;” and how did these conceptions relate to notions of citizenship, equality and normality? How and why did the meaning of the terms “Gypsies” and “Roma” become imbued in popular discourse with ideas of unhealthiness and social deviance? What implications does translating perceived cultural traits and lifestyles of Roma into non-ethnic frames of reference have for understanding racism and ethnic sensibilities in the country today? The work emphasizes historical continuities between contemporary xenophobia and the strategies which the communist regime used to deal with the “Gypsy question.” Focusing on the discrepancies between written laws and policies as well as their implementation, this study exposes the intricate relationships between official beliefs, institutional policies and popular consciousness under the communist regime. For it was these relationships which together created the mechanisms of social control that facilitated discrimination of Czechoslovak Roma under the guise of social welfare.

As in the study of any social problem, to understand terrorism we must understand how certain interest groups and bureaucratic agencies present their particular views of terrorist phenomena, and how they strive and try to establish these as the ones that come to be accepted as obviously correct. We also need to consider their audiences. Why do the media accept or reject certain views of terrorism? Why does the public accept one kind of rhetorical presentation rather than another? How are popular attitudes shaped and reshaped by the images and stereotypes offered in the mass media, and in popular culture? When we appreciate the processes involved in making news about terrorism, we are better able to sift critically the claims that are made, and to evaluate policies. "Images of Terror provides a critical guide to the images of terrorism that we see daily in the mass media. All too often, scholars and journalists accept uncritically the interpretations of terrorism they receive from governments and official agencies. Our perceptions of terrorism are formed by the interaction of bureaucratic agencies, academics and private experts, and the mass media. Yet the images and stereo types offered do not necessarily reflect objective reality. Jenkins argues that terrorism, like most other problems, is socially constructed. He does not suggest that terrorism is not a real problem, an authentic menace, or that society should not respond promptly and effectively to terrorist threats. But rather than being something understood in the same way by people in different societies and different eras, the concept of terrorism is shaped by social and political processes, by bureaucratic needs and mediastructures. This process of construction applies both to the overall concept, and to specific movements, to groups and their actions.
