Scientific Essay from the year 2008 in the subject Law - Comparative Legal Systems, Comparative Law, grade: High Distinction, The University of Adelaide, language: English, abstract: A Corporate rescue Generally speaking, the corporate rescue process and the liquidation procedure form the two basic columns of a modern insolvency regime.(2) Whereas the Australian legislator expressly implemented these two procedures the German legislator codified a uniform insolvency process. An effective corporate rescue procedure is a cornerstone of a prospering economy. Economical value is closely connected to the risk of economic loss. Therefore, economic growth will only be sustainable if investments are supported by safeguards donated by effective insolvency regimes not only focussing on a fast liquidation but also on the reorganisation or rescue of a company. Only the careful balance of creditors¿ rights and the entrepreneurial spirit of the debtors ensure attractiveness for investments.(3) B Comparative approach This essay is focussed on the administrator as point of comparison because his role in the process significantly reflects the principles of the underlying corporate rescue regime. In both countries Australia and Germany the administrator is a relatively influential organ. The essay will show that the role of the German administrator is much more influenced by the court than in Australia. The essay¿s goal is to examine selected issues concerning the Australian and German administrator. After presenting the different roles in the Australian and German corporate rescue process the essay will critically review the role of the administrator in both regimes in order to examine the effectiveness of the process from a comparative point of view. ********* (2) See United Nations Commission on International Trade Law, Legislative Guide on Insolvency Law (2005) 14, recommendation 2. Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: USA, grade: 1,0 (A), Ripon College (Department of Politics and Government), course: Senior Seminar, language: English, abstract: Due to economic reforms that were started in the late 1970s, China has stepped into the center of international politics and economy during the past years. These reforms helped the country to achieve an immense economic upturn with annual growth rates of almost ten percent and thus made China an ever more important actor on the international stage of politics. The United States strongly support China's economic development by granting it permanent Normal Trade Relations, for example, and investing directly in China's manufacturing sector. But whereas China has been liberalizing its market, using American interests to gain profits, it largely maintains its defensive and rejecting attitude about changing its human rights situation. There are controversial opinions about how the United States should respond towards China human rights situation. In order to make aware of the stagnated situation of the human rights issue in U.S. China policy, this paper explores how the Clinton administration handled human rights in China policy and looks at the role of human rights in the Bush jr. administration's policy towards China.

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,7, University of Paderborn, 10 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Learning a new language always implies learning its grammar. In what depth should then teaching grammar be part of the teaching unit and what important aspects of the Second Language Acquisition should be considered by teachers in the classroom? There is also the question how the students in general acquire grammatical structures. This paper first gives an introduction into the history of language teaching which is followed by an overview of different aspects of the Second Language Acquisition and an example for a study on the Teachability Hypothesis. I chose this study because it was a subject of interest in the seminar "Issues in Applied Linguistics" and was the topic my group worked on for a presentation. To show how grammar teaching is understood in the classroom, a summary of the different options in language teaching is given afterwards. The conclusion at the end not only serves as a summary of the paper but also sums up the answers to the questions asked above and shows the problems behind them. It is followed by a bibliography and an appendix.

Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3 (A), University of Siegen (Anglistics Institute), course: Anglophone Literature in Malta, 5 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Nicholas Monsarrat may be one of the most well-known and most influential Anglophone writers of Malta, especially when it comes to historical novels. Books such as "A Cruel Sea" are known far over the borders of Malta. As history is crucial to most of his novels, and as "The Kappilan of Malta" makes use of it rather frequently, my interest in this essay is laid on the role that history adopts in this novel. To analyse the enormous amount of historical happenings that are dealt with in this book would be far too much work for one essay so the work had to be reduced to some important points. The essay will deal with several points of the use of history within the book. Means of influencing the reader will be observed and analysed and examples for adjustments to real events will be discussed. I will try to outline in this paper, that the use of history is crucial to the story of the book as well as to the message to the Maltese to never give up hope and to take measures into the ir own hands.

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject American Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,3, University of Cologne, language: English, abstract: The ability to learn and produce natural language and move beyond the communication of sign and body language is unique to human beings. The acquisition of language is possible since grammar is assumed to be universal. Universal Grammar (UG) defines properties of language itself. CHOMSKY¿S theory of grammar is constrained, first, by universal grammatical principles which determine the broad outline of grammar and are generally true and, second, by grammatical parameters which are language-specific dimensions of a particular language and allow crosslinguistic variation. The first doesn¿t have to be learned since it is part of the innate language faculty; the latter needs to be acquired and is assumed to be linked to individual items in the lexicon (CAPDEVILA I BATET ET AL. 1995, 31). The central task of acquisition is thus the construction of the grammar of the target language, in other words, the setting of parameters, which is also referred to as grammatical learning (versus lexical learning). One of the parameters that needs to be set is the construction of negation. In this paper, I look at the nature and operation of negation (part I) and how children and adults acquire it during their first and second language acquisition process of different languages (parts II and III). Moreover, underlying principles and mechanisms of L1 and L2 acquisition will be discussed and compared. I want to investigate the way in which the principles and parameters of UG (do not) operate over time as the individual¿s grammar gradually develops and find out if the children¿s and adults¿ grammars conform to these. An individual acquiring L1 has to access the innate grammatical principals of UG in the initial state and learn the language-specific grammatical parameters. L1 acquisition is rapid, uniform and almost error-free. How the acquisition of negation for an L1-learner develops will be presented in the second part. L2-learners have already learned an L1 and are expected to be competent users of the specific grammar of their first language. They learn a second language, i.e. determine a new setting for relevant grammatical parameters in order to arrive at a linguistic system of the target L2. Their acquisition is characterized by great variability crosslinguistically and across individual learners (MEISEL 1997, 227). Part 3 looks at 2LA of negation and wants to describe whether 1LA and 2LA share similarities and if UG plays a role in 2LA.

Diploma Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Landscape Management, grade: Sehr gut, University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna, language: English, abstract: Although China cultural as well as political is opening up since about thirty years, the Chinese manner of cerebration, except of few exemptions, has still keep refused most people in the western world. Primarily this has to do with the ancient Chinese ideology self. The Chinese, who are calling their country ¿The Empire of the Middle¿, were on principle in the past rarely attempted to leave their nation because the remaining world for them was not really livable. Outside the boundaries, there lived the so called barbarians, who in ancient times mostly were embodied by brutal Mongolian tribes, who martially tried to infiltrate China and from them the Chinese had to protect. So, they created their own world, a world in the world, enclosed by the thousands of meters long Great Wall (Chang Cheng), inside of they felt confident and could develop further. This retirement in an enclosed space and last but not least the retirement in oneself paved finally the way for their private gardens, in which they could undisturbed find an access to a better ¿world¿. This essay will deal with these little enclosed garden worlds, these micro-cosmos in a macro-cosmos. This work consists of a searching for their history and the holistically ¿religious¿ backgrounds, which first made enable these small but coevally ¿infinite¿ universes. It get to the bottom of the correlations between time and space, establish relationships between narrow and open, bright and dark, and last but not least inside and outside, which all are parts of an all-containing, super-ordinate ¿Great¿. It makes close connections to landscape paintings and the gardens self, which as major motif threads through the whole text, will find out that they are close correlated to the ¿Great¿ and grapple with the centre of the ¿Whole¿, with the ¿Zero-Perspective¿ or the ¿Vapidness¿, in which the human as important part at least can dive in to touch the sky. Of course also the framework of a Chinese private garden, the several elements, are considered, without them no garden could exist. The role and the important task of their walls will be bespoken, the several constructions of their buildings and last but not least the close to the human correlated plants. All this aspects will be picked up again at a walkabout through three famous Chinese gardens in Suzhou, where the mindfully reader finally will notice, that size does not necessarily count in architectural garden space.

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject History Europe - Other Countries - Modern Times, Absolutism, Industrialization, grade: ECTS 8, University of Groningen, course: M.A. "Euroculture", language: English, abstract: This paper attempts to follow the cultural channels and actual steps taken by Peter the Great and his successors to cultivate Western European tastes in Russia and to direct the Russian Empire to a Western path of development. It investigates the historic role of St. Petersburg as Russiäs ¿window on Europe¿, and features the great masterworks of Western European art (namely, Dutch) assembled and prized in the Hermitage by the Romanov dynasty, by Peter the Great and by his spiritual follower and enlightener - Catherine the Great, in particular. Over the course of centuries, Russian tsars continuously borrowed ideas and concepts from their Western neighbors. St. Petersburg was to mark the way for Russia to become modern by creating an environment that could be maintained only by broader and deeper contact with the West. However, Peter Rietbergen in his essay on ¿Russia between West and East¿ stresses ¿the inherent duality in Russian culture, and in the national character, as half-Asian, half-European¿. This issue is to be discussed and evaluated in the paper. A chronological overview of the main acquisitions of Dutch paintings to the Hermitage in the course of the XVIII century is included in the paper. It is hoped that the paper will add to the understanding of the described epoch of the Russian Empire and will expose the role it played in defining its path of historical development. The thesis statement investigated in the paper is as follows: ¿Has the borrowing of cultural values from Western Europe contributed to the Europeanization of Russia in the XVIII century?¿ Under the term ¿cultural values¿ artefacts, objects of art, enlightening ideas and books, as well as progressive reforms, European fashion and lifestyle, etc are implied. One of the aims of the research is to demonstrate that art which has been broadly studied from divergent viewpoints of style, content, iconography, philosophy, and the social sciences, can also be approached as a function of economic and socio-political motives. A method of comparative analysis of the Westernizing cultural policies by Peter I and later, by Catherine II is used.

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Other, grade: 1, West Virginia University, language: English, abstract: This paper discusses the concept of Academic Writing and the role of the importance in the ESL classroom. The different perspectives that have to be considered while teaching writing for an Academic purpose and some teaching approaches will be mentioned and evaluated. Thereby the focus will be on the different opinions and methods, as well as constraints and problems that scholars investigated about the notion of Academic Writing. There are a lot of discussions and some research has recently tried to define how the particluar and varied academic discourse communities have to be considered in the curriculum of ESL learners, but still there is a lot of uncertainty of how effective classroom teaching in composition or content classes lead to a the demanded knowledge transformation that the ESL students need in order to fit successfully into a special academic field and write with respect to the expectations of that special audience. This paper tries to mention the most important articles and findings in order to understand the notion of Academic writing and examines some of the constraints students as well as teachers have to deal with and summarizes also some opportunities of making students aware of specific styles, formats, and conventions that are needed in their particular discourse communities and that can and should be involved in ESL composition and content classes with English for an academic purpose to achieve a desired participation in the higher-educational level through fullfilment of the writing standards of educational and academical conventions and values of a particular discourse community. A working definition of Godev explains the notion of Academic writing: ¿The term ¿academic writing¿ seems to escape any definition that may try to encompass every writing task likely to be encountered in any of the academic disciplines.¿ (Godev 2000, 636). The reason for this is that the style of a given academic product is defined by conventions that are ultimately dicipline specific as Spack pointed out. (Spack 1988, 32). Nevertheless there are four different perspectives that have to be considered to get a wider understanding of the term academic writing. The notions of a) audience, b) task, c) communicative functions, and d) style are very crucial in order to conceive a working definition of academic writing. The four different perspectives have different views of and about academic writing. Gajdusek & van Dommelen 1993, 202) as well as Silva (1991) stated that from the perspective of the audience, academic writing is a kind of writing accepted by the faculty of a particular discourse community when discussing a topic in a published material or when the members of the special discourse community adress themselves to others of the same one orally. Silva explained the notion of...

Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1-, University of Dusseldorf "Heinrich Heine" (Anglistisches Institut), course: Domain Specific English Language - Language and Law, language: English, abstract: The English language has taken over the key role in international trade, legislation and policy-making. It has achieved "the enhanced status [¿] as the dominant world language [which] has led to an increased demand for the training of competent specialists able to mediate" (Alcaraz Varo/Hughes, 2002: 1). This goes along with a "phenomenal increase in the teaching of [¿] 'English for special (or specific) purposes' " (ibid.: 2). What is the reason for this development? This piece of work might give an answer; it dedicates itself to domain specific English language: language and law. It concentrates on the characteristics of the structure of legal English in particular. An overview of the central structural features is given, without claiming completeness. Legal professionals aim at a precise explanation of facts which should leave no doubts. This aim forces them to use a certain kind of language pattern, such as including a high amount of definitions in legal texts, along with numerous complex and ancient phrases deriving from Law French and plentiful enumerations which can all together form a single sentence covering several lines. Dependent on which party they represent, lawyers make frequent use of features that reduce the agent in his identity while emphasizing the action ¿ a matter of strategy which has the impeding of comprehension as a consequence. Therefore, the field of law becomes completely unapproachable for laymen, who are scarcely able to follow legal discourse. Even well-educated native speakers often find it hard to understand the language used in court. However, the access to one¿s rights is important. To begin with, the reader will be provided with an overall definition of special languages and an explanation why to regard them as a variety of a language; afterwards this will be illustrated at the example of the language of the law. Subsequently, the foundations for the structural analysis of legal English will have been laid. Language has to serve as the vehicle for transporting what the law is about. But legal language does not seem to be a good packaging of legal contents. That is why experts are asked to diminish the barrier and mediate between the language of the law and common speech. Does legalese function as an obstacle rather than a vehicle then? This question will have to be considered in this piece of work. Fussnoten: Alcaraz Varó, Enrique / Hughes, Brian (2002): Legal Translation Explained. (Manchester: St. Jerome). S.1f.

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, Saarland University, language: English, abstract: In this paper I will deal with the topic of ¿Scaffolding in the EFL classroom.¿ Scaffolding plays a crucial role in the classroom and can help to contribute to good teaching. Nevertheless, most teachers are neither aware of the huge benefits of scaffolded instruction, nor do they know anything about the concept of ¿scaffolding¿ or the strategies related to it. Even if they sometimes happen to make use of scaffolding strategies, they also often miss the opportunity to apply them when it might have been appropriate to do so. grin the turk on opera

Découvrir informations, conseils et prix pour grin the turk on opera vendu 66.9 € , est placé dans la catégorie Bücher & Zeitschriften; ce produit est fabriqué par Grin et est vendu par Orellfuessli.ch

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2009 in the subject Musicology - Miscellaneous, grade: 2.0, University of Osnabrück (Musikwissenschaft), language: English, abstract: This thesis is about the presentation of the Turks in operas of the West-ern European nations. I will have a look at which different roles where used to describe the Turks. In the sense of this paper the term ¿Turk¿ does not restrict its perspective to the area of the modern Republic of Turkey. As, for example, Preibisch (1908, p13) notes: during the 18th century composers did not distinguish between, for example, Persia and Turkey. Pahlen (1980, p12) even suggests that the whole Arabian community was regarded as Turkish. Moreover, except other Arabian countries sometimes even China and India were regarded as ¿Turkey¿ (Whaples 1998, p4). To be precise, this inaccuracy can be applied to a lot of other countries that were part of the Ottoman Empire like Egypt, Algeria, and so on. However, although some of the operas that will be discussed in this paper do not play in Turkey or contain Turkish charac-ters but are placed in neighboring countries of the Ottoman Empire or contain characters from these countries, these works will also be dis-cussed because from the perspective of our ancestors, they all display Turkish elements. The definition of Turkish that will be used in this pa-per is therefore similar to that used by Griffel (1975, p85ff) and is based on a rather dynamic concept. This means, when analyzing an opera concerning its ¿Turkishness¿, the common perspective of the time has to be kept in mind. Apart from that, I will analyze how the typical characters changed over the course of time keeping in mind the historical background. This is achieved by comparing similar characters from different operas with each other. As we will see, basically the timeline can be separated in three different parts. In the baroque-period the Turks were generally viewable in heroic roles which fitted to the concept of the opera seria. Then, the upcoming of the opera buffa made it possible to exaggerate elements of Turkish culture and characters in order ridicule them. On the other side, due to the beliefs of the Era of Enlightenment, Turkish characters were used as a mean to show the deficiencies of European culture.
