Diploma Thesis from the year 2001 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: Good, University of Vienna (Anglistics-American Studies), 135 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: When during the 1980s short novels like Jay McInerney's 'Bright Lights, Big City' (1984), Bret Easton Ellis' 'Less Than Zero' (1985), Tama Janowitz' 'Slaves of New York' (1986) or Michael Chabon's 'The Mysteries of Pittsburgh' (1988) became talked-about bestsellers in short succession, conservative critics were shocked. Their rejection of these novels was mainly grounded in the discrepancy between the expectations of traditional literary criticism and the new forms of expression these young authors used. The referential matrices of their novels are loaded with signs and codes of their decade; images and fictions spread by mass media have become a fixed part in the world of those novels. Traditional critics considered such references trite and superficial. It cannot be ignored, however, that popular culture found its way into contemporary literature and critics will have to get accustomed to the fact that in contemporary literature the referential horizon, which once was formed by the Bible, classical antiquity and the great works of world literature, is increasingly provided by popular culture as disseminated by the mass media. The fact that these authors were all very young and that they were presented and celebrated like pop stars was, for many critics, proof that pop industry had finally taken over the literary market and that authors would no longer be measured by their achievements as writers but by their celebrity status determined by media-coverage. They felt the end of serious literature was near. On the other hand, there were reviewers, whose praise of those novels and their authors was just as undifferentiated as their denunciations by others. Fashionable terms, from "MTV novels" to "yuppie literature", were attached to the novels, and they were glorified as highly accomplished expressions of a changed Zeitgeist'. Despite the great amount of media attention, most of the novels have rarely been closely examined. The two novels 'Bright Lights, Big City' and 'Less Than Zero' will be the focus of this thesis and subject of closer investigation, because they were treated as the representative novels for the whole group. A broad approach to their subject matter will be chosen in order to do justice to the numerous culture-bound implications they contain.

Master's Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: A, University of Silesia, language: English, abstract: The following thesis consists in an attempt at synthesising several problems connected with narrating historical representations by means of metaphors. It examines the functions metaphorical narratives may attend in order to (de)construct historical identities as well as the places metaphors may occupy in the order of discourses. Divided into three chapters, the dissertation deals with the ¿spectacular¿ and the ¿performative¿ potential of figurative speech assembled in historical narrations that are, in quite distinct fashions, presented in selected novels by Julian Barnes, Graham Swift and Kazuo Ishiguro. The methodological profile of the analysis conducted in this thesis is centralised on the deconstructionist notion of metaphor as well as certain poststructuralist conceptions of power relations. But despite the fact that most theoretical inspirations are drawn from the philosophy of Jacques Derrida and Michel Foucault there appear also other names and theoretical sources. Among these quite a substantial role can be assigned to literary criticism developed between 1950s and 1990s in Great Britain and elsewhere in Europe, feminist critique along with its various orientations, psychoanalytic writings as well as texts authored by philosophers and critics linked more to structuralist tradition and New Criticism rather than deconstruction such as Paul Ricoeur, Roland Barthes, Mikhail Bakhtin, Wolfgang Iser, Stanley Fish or Walter Benjamin. The first chapter, Metaphoricised Historiography, as its title implies, serves as a short introduction to the intricacies of post-war British history and its impact on literature. The next chapter entitled History as Spectacle deals with recontextualising and manipulating historical scenes. And the last chapter, History as Performance, addresses a certain type of historical sensitivity. It is discussed on the examples of visual arts and the situation of historical painting in the context of being objectified in endless interpretative circulation in galleries and museums. On the whole, the dissertation tries to estimate the significance of metaphors in discourses narrating historical identities.

It was Bloch¿s curiosity about the dark side of Puritan America, about Americäs psychology cult, especially about Freudian theories4 and the ever strong worship of a mother picture that transformed Ed Gein into Norman Bates, a bogeyman with an Oedipus fixation on ¿mother,¿ into a transvestite with a love for taxidermy. At the time when Bloch wrote Psycho Hitchcock already had been a renowned film director. However, this constant success had put Hitchcock on his guard against the ¿trap of self-plagiarism.¿ In search for the unexpected, Psycho was his chance to further develop his style of suspense by entering a new field of the Gothic horror. Hitchcock¿s trust in the story proved him right, because as the book seemed to be a winner, the film achieved a groundbreaking success until today.

To walk is to vegetate, to stroll is to live.¿ (Balzac, "Physiologie du Mariage") 'City of Glass' is Paul Auster¿s first novel, published in 1985, after being rejected by several publishers. The first part of 'The New York Trilogy' has been translated into 17 languages so far, a fact that pleads for the novel¿s commercial success nowadays. An indication for the literary importance of 'City of Glass' is the continually growing number of essays, anthologies and monographs all over the world. It is undeniable that its selling success is related to the general fascination for the cosmopolitan city of New York and for detective stories, as ¿ at first sight ¿ Auster¿s novel follows the tradition of Edgar Allan Poe. However, he follows the tradition ¿as creator of ¿the lost ones¿¿, as ¿ on closer inspection ¿ the reader has to realize that the real mystery is one of confused character identities and realities. 'City of Glass' does not meet the reader¿s expectations about a typical New York ¿city novel¿: Auster created an adequate text for a modified, postmodern cityscape where all objects of the city seem like linguistic codes that need to be deciphered. The risks of the city result from the confusion of language and perception. The fear of an identity collapse comes along with the apparent collapse of the cityscape. Auster picks out the loss of stability and security in the city as central theme. He describes a world begging for order and interpretation where ¿nothing is real except chance¿. (...) Auster's character Quinn is a deconstructed character of postmodernism, he acts like a 'flâneur', but does not feel comfortable while walking through the city, he seems lost. New York is the ¿nowhere¿ Quinn has built around himself. Professor Stillman also seems to stroll like a 'flâneur', but he has to fulfill an operation (in contrast to the ¿classical¿ 'flâneur' who has no aim). Auster deconstructs the postmodern figure of the flâneur as he deconstructs the classical detective novel. Ironically, these very deconstructions help to shape the novel. Quinn can be read as flâneur adapted to a postmodern world, I argue. In the following, I will explore the relations between Auster¿s 'City of Glass' and concepts of 'flânerie', strolling urban observing. In order to discuss 'flânerie' in Auster¿s work, it is essential to take a closer look on the term first. (...)

Forster¿s novel "A passage to India" was published in 1924. The work is largely based on the personal experiences Forster made during his two visits to India, which are the source of the striking authenticity of the text. Forster experienced the possibility of another view of life, that was opened up to him through his Indian friendships. On the other hand, he got to know the difficulties that spring up from so profoundly different approaches to life as the ones of the West and the East. Due to his own attitude of liberal-humanism and his belief in the freedom of action and the individuality of each human being as the basis for any political action, he was upset by the racial oppression, the cultural misunderstandings and the hypocrisies he found in Anglo-India. Forster¿s novel is clearly concerned with the doubtfulness of the concept of superiority. It puts forth the question to what extent a culture can claim to be a civilized nation and in virtue of what it can be justified to impose one¿s own way of life upon another culture. The author provides us with a vivid picture of Indian concepts and Indian sets of values without judging them or separating right from wrong. His suggestion seems to be to accept the co-existence of such alternatives. More complex is the problem of intercultural relationships. How can barriers be torn down and bridges be built? To this question, Forster does not give a definite answer. He suggests a flourishing interchange between the races until the necessary cultural sensibility is achieved. At several points in the novel, the author hints at the general possibility of a peaceful relation between the two races: All the Indians who had been in England had had only positive experiences. But within a colonial context this seems impossible. Although reconciled, Aziz and Fielding have to accept that their friendship is not possible because they have no meeting place, at least ¿not yet¿, not until India has her own nation and is free from the oppression of the colonial system.

Die drei zentralen Erkenntnisinteressen der nachstehenden Ausführungen lassen sich folgendermassen umreissen: Erstens sollen die Absichten der Regierung Margaret Thatchers¿ hinsichtlich ihrer Bildungspolitik kurz umrissen werden. Zweitens wird aufgezeigt, wie das Universitätswesen auf diese Absichten reagiert hat. Drittens wird untersucht, wie diese Zielrichtungen sowie ihre Umsetzungen und Konsequenzen in Nice Work literarisch umgesetzt worden sind. Im ersten Hauptteil meiner Arbeit gebe ich einen kurz gehaltenen Überblick über die Werte und Konzepte des Thatcherism und beziehe mich dann explizit auf die Probleme in der universitären Welt sowie auf den englischen Universitätsroman der 80er Jahre. Hierbei werden weder die Anfänge noch die Entwicklung des englischen Universitätsromans erwähnt, sondern er wird nur im Zeitrahmen des Thatcherism betrachtet. Weitergehend analysiere ich im zweiten Hauptteil meiner Arbeit die Repräsentation des Thatcherism in Nice Work. Hierbei wird explizit auf die Universität Rummidge als Ebenbild des Niederganges der Universitäten in den 80ern eingegangen, den Themenkomplex Industrie und Universität sowie Emanzipation in Nice Work. Im Zuge dessen wird auch Changing Places von David Lodge erwähnt. Als Grundlagen besonders wichtig für diese Arbeit waren die Dissertation Campus Clowns and the Canon ¿ David Lodge¿s Campus Fiction von Eva Lambertsson Björk sowie Two Cultures, Universities and Intellectuals ¿ Der englische Universitätsroman der 70er und 80er Jahre im Kontext des Hochschuldiskurses von Thomas Kühn.

In this research paper I want to explore how the use of different narrative techniques correlates with and indicates the protagonist¿s development towards both an artist and an autonomous adult. Except of the concluding diary entries, the novel is narrated by a third-person narrator who has got a limited point of view since he is focalized through Stephen. The narrator presents Stephen¿s consciousness and activities in various ways; an important aspect about his narration is that he persistently adapts his style to Stephen¿s idiom and mood. In some passages the narrator reports almost objectively on events, however, often he renders Stephen¿s consciousness, for which he uses different narrative techniques. Since Dorrit Cohn is thought to be one of the most important researchers on the field of narrative techniques concerning the presentation of consciousness, I will base this research paper on her definitions. Cohn distinguishes three ways a third-person narrator can use for rendering a person¿s consciousness: psycho-narration, narrated monologue and quoted interior monologue, all of which are used in the novel. I will focus on psycho-narration and narrated monologue since these are the techniques predominantly used. Psycho- narration is the narrator¿s description of a character¿s thoughts and feelings, thus, it is the most indirect way of rendering a character¿s consciousness. The third-person reference and the tense of narration are maintained. The presence of a narrator is marked since a verbum dicendi is always used. Narrated monologue uses the third person singular and the preterite as well; however, at the same time the syntactical structure remains that of direct discourse with exclamations, questions, repetitions, interjections and exaggerated emphases. The effect of narrated monologue is to reduce as far as possible the distance between the narrator and the character existing in all third person narrations. Since psycho- narration and narrated monologue use a third-person narrator and the same time span, the two techniques can alternate without perceptible transitions. As a result, the narrator can weave in and out of the character¿s thoughts and the distance between narrator and character can be eliminated.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, University of Osnabrück, language: English, abstract: Compared to other writers of his time, Shakespeare introduces an unusual amount of deep female characters in his comedies. His representation of women, in particular the ways in which his female roles are interpreted and put on stage, have become topics of scientific interest. Especially the young women often show vitality, great intelligence, and a strong sense of personal independence, which marks them as ¿queen[s] of comedy¿ (Palmer 72). Therefore, they are often referred to as Shakespeare¿s heroines. In the following, I want to show their importance and point out that each heroine, although they all share character traits, has distinct and unique qualities. In doing so, I will occasionally refer to a secondary literature and involve positions of different critics. Though, my attention will be focussed on the plays treated in this research paper: A Midsummer Night¿s Dream, As You Like It, Much Ado About Nothing, The Tempest, and Twelfth Night. On the basis of these romantic comedies, I will analyse how the young women are presented and subsequently compare them among one another. In the first part I will look at each heroine individually and introduce their plays. Then I will develop possible similarities between them: Beautiful but unworldly Miranda seems to be totally controlled by her father Prospero, but she shows a strong will in planning a shared future with Ferdinand and she is aware of her superiority to the savage Caliban. Hermiäs father similarly chooses her husband. With magic help, however, she and Helena manage to come together with the right partner. Moreover, Helena reveals that she believes in the transformative power of love (MND I.2, 233-4). Viola in Twelfth Night is in a way almost the opposite of Rosalind in As You Like It, although both plays deal with a cross-dressed heroine. Whereas Rosalind can tease Orlando, always knowing that he is in love with her and being moreover able to reveal herself to him whenever she wants, Viola feels trapped in her disguise and has to work for the man she is in love with and even woo another woman on his behalf. Beatrice may not disguise herself in order to show her power like Rosalind, but she is nevertheless a strong female character: she marries only after asserting her dislike for the traditionally minor role of women in marriage and courtship in that time.[...]

Business needs to operate across borders efficiently to stimulate a more competitive supply of goods and services. A plurality of separate solutions for the same issue is a risk that the uncertainty and complexity of the legal environment will undermine rather than enable legitimate economic activity. Therefore we need to create an economic environment underpinned by legal certainty and security. This essay on European Private Law discusses the progress of Europeanization in the field of Contract Law. It will, in doing so, especially focus on legal education and its contribution to achieve unification and harmonisation of European Union law. But, as the title indicates, in the actual centre of this essay, will be one scholar, who has significantly contributed to the understanding of comparative law and who has increased its status as a recognised legal subject: Basil Markesinis. It is furthermore my goal to provide English law students who are interested in comparative law topics with a guide to useful literature for their studies, especially with regards to German Law. I hope that this essay can contribute that comparative law may no longer be a "subject in search of an audience", as Markesinis called it[1], and to persuade English students of the benefits of comparative law studies.

The Joker in The Dark Knight as a Post-September 11-Villain" establishes a picture of Gotham City that is more "realistic" than in previous Batman films. The population of this city is realised in three parts: the mob consists of African Americans and other "Ethnic"-Americans, the JetSet is almost completely light-skinned. In between one finds Gothams police, mixed Ethnic/black and white, but also known to be corrupt. Indeed, the film follows subtle anti-state-sentiments in making the three highest officers in Gotham "Ethnic"-Americans: Garcia, Loeb and Surrillo. Only a disfunctional state makes the nightly operations of a vigilante like Batman - a person, who decides for himself what is good and what is bad - necessary. The predecessors of the Joker are the great villains of film- and culture history, starting with Shakespeares Iago up to slashers like Freddy Krueger. The Joker clearly does not fit into the three-part pattern in the first part of my paper. His malice is sourced by four different strands: references to Satan references to femininity references to disability and references to a terrorism clearly related to the one of Al-Qaeda and its supporter groups. In establishing a villain along these lines, the producers of the film address a mainstream which is in their view reactionary, latently racist and anti-emancipatory. Though the film makes exceptional statements (eg. Morgan Freeman), evil in their eyes is either black, disabled or feminin. In its displayed reaction to the new threat of the Joker - Batman sets up a surveillance systems that monitors all citizens of Gotham - the film can be interpreted as a defense of the Bush policies after 9/11.

Most of them had taken place in a peaceful manner, with the exception of their encounter with the Pequots. Despite great efforts to negotiate for peaceful coexistence, the Pequots occasionally committed sudden assaults on the English colonists and thereby broke mutual agreements. The increasing Pequot aggressiveness soon exhausted the English endurance. As a consequence, the English decide to counterattack. John Mason, who commanded the Connecticut forces, focuses on the causes of war, while Captain John Underhill, commander of the Massachusetts Bay forces, relies on his theory of the successful massacre at God¿s interaction. As a contemporary narrator, Philip Vincent relates on information of people who witnessed the occurrences. The applied cruelty and systematic annihilation of almost the whole Pequot tribe, of course, raise the question about justification of the reasons. Is it providence, as Underhill interprets it, that the Pequots were so cruelly attacked? Is it an act of self-preservation as Mason concludes? Or did the Pequots deserve to be massacred for their tenacious aggressiveness and insult against the English as Vincent claims? It is a fact that Mason, Underhill as well as Vincent endorse and defend the massacre from their own point of view. Since all three narratives are from the first-person point of view, the interpretations of the Pequot massacre are biased and reflect individual reasons and emotions. Religious-based racism using the Christian bible as reference; desperation and anger are the sources of the cruelty of the massacre. The strong desire for vengeance and the quest for Puritan identity cause the English describe the Pequots as God¿s tool.

This is especially true for the European North, which was and still is as far as we consider the Kola Peninsula for some strategic reasons the most militarised area of the world. This of course had serious influences on the security situation and the security policy of the Western countries. The Northern Countries with Sweden and Finland took the way of neutrality, while Norway and Denmark joined the NATO. Now the old confrontation between West and East disappeared, so that problems relating to this do not exist anymore. But also new problems emerged and some problems only changed their face. This essy gives a brief overview over the security challenges in the European North, it shows some possible reactions to these challenges and tries to value, if the existing Nordic Co-operation can be useful in this.
