They both need each other. In order to succeed the platform provider must ensure active participation of both groups. In the beginning these bazaars face chicken-and-egg problem, which should be solved, sometimes even by providing free chicken. These markets include some of the most important industries in new economy such as mobile telephony companies, free TV services, OS suppliers, software providers, gaming companies, credit card companies, auction sites etc. Ebay and amazon are good examples of two-sided markets. In such two-sided markets buyers and sellers first trade with the intermediary/ies so as to gain access to the functionalities of a platform and then trade with each other under oligopolistic conditions. In chapter 1 of this paper an attempt has been made to describe finer nuances of two-sided markets. Thereafter I proceed to discuss the various dynamics of two-sided markets in chapter 2. Two-sided firms differ from traditional industries and they follow totally different business economics. Marginal cost does not help them in deciding optimal price. Pricing policies and other business strategies must be formulated in such a way that it should ensure active interaction of both groups. Pricing strategy should get both sides on board and should also solve chicken-and-egg problem. Chapter 3 describes the pricing policy adopted by two-sided markets. Chapter 4 deals with relevance of two-sided markets for competition policy. Competition Authorities do not need different set of rules to regulate these industries. However Competition Authorities must consider various economic principles that influence pricing and investment decisions in two-sided markets. Chapter 5 concludes with various observations and suggestions.

The enthusiasm culminated in the moon landing of 1969. Since then only spectacular events in space travel were covered by the media and noticed by the public. However in reality often the non-exciting developments were those which changed life on Earth most significantly. Many developments for space travel and the usage of outer space made and still make our civilisation totally dependent on outer space activities. This includes the development of satellites for communication, television, Earth observation, weather forecasting and navigation to name just a few. All this happened widely unnoticed by the broad public. What is even more overlooked by the public but changed life at least as significantly are ¿spin off technologies¿ with the Personal Computer being the most prominent one. Despite the huge growth during the 1990s, only a few studies on the future potential of the space market were conducted on a comprehensive basis. This thesis therefore draws a complete overview of all aspects and sectors of the space market and analyses its future potential as well as the potential of possible future applications. Additionally the legal and institutional framework of outer space activities and its implications on business activities, institutional space ventures, military space applications, and commercial companies is discussed in this work. The results show that outer space is a market with a huge potential, not only due to the growth potential in already existing applications like navigation and communication, but also due to a large potential in emerging applications like spacetourism and in future applications like mining on the moon. In addition not only commercial applications are growing but also military and governmental spending for space ventures is on the rise due to increasing commitment of emerging countries like India and China, and the drive of industrialised nations to keep their leading position. Based on the extensive analysis the thesis suggests that the outer space sector as a whole is emerging and will become increasingly important in the future.

Zentrale Erfolgskriterien einer Volkswirtschaft entspringen aus der Innovationsfähigkeit und der realen Innovationstätigkeit von Unternehmen. Diese haben sowohl positiven Einfluss auf den sozialen Wohlstand als auch auf die Konsumentenwohlfahrt. Um dem zukunftsrelevanten, volkswirtschaftlichen Stellenwert von Innovationen gerecht zu werden, zeichnete sich am Ende des letzten Jahrhunderts in den USA eine Entwicklung ab, Innovationen in den Zielkatalog wettbewerbpolitischer Tätigkeit aufzunehmen. Ziel der USAntitrustpolitik war es, Wohlfahrtssteigerungen durch die Förderung der Innovationstätigkeit und durch die optimale Gestaltung des Innovationswettbewerbs zu erreichen. Weiterhin wurde vermutet, dass ebenso der Wettbewerb zur Hervorbringung von Innovationen durch Konsequenzen von Marktkonzentration beschränkt werden kann. Die USamerikanische Antitrustpolitik ging davon aus, dass konzentrierte Innovationskapazitäten Unternehmen befähigen, den Wettbewerb zu beschränken. Daraus wurde eine Reduktion der Innovationstätigkeit vermutet, wodurch die Innovationsrate vermindert oder die Innovationsgeschwindigkeit verlangsamt wurde. Um dies zu beseitigen, wurde die fusionsbedingte Verhaltensveränderung auf die Innovationstätigkeit wettbewerbspolitisch untersucht. Einhergehend damit wurde die ¿Innovation Market Analysis¿(IMA) als ergänzendes Instrument der Fusionskontrolle entwickelt. Es handelte sich dabei um eine Konzeption, die Konsequenzen von fusionsbedingter Marktkonzentration auf die Erzeugung von Innovationen bezog. Hierzu bediente sie sich dem Konstrukt eines abgegrenzten Innovationsmarkts. Ziel der IMA war es, Wettbewerbsbeschränkungen im Vorfeld aufzuspüren und diese zu verhindern, um durch parallele Forschungspfade, schnelle Innovationsgeschwindigkeit und hohe Innovationsrate die Wohlfahrt zu optimieren. Jedoch erwies sich die Grundlage der IMA in theoretischer und empirischer Hinsicht als problematisch. Das Werk versucht, die wettbewerbspolitische Entwicklung der IMA darzustellen, deren theoretische Grundlagen, Funktionsweisen, praktische Anwendungen und Ziele im Rahmen der US-Antitrustpolitik abzubilden. Zum anderen wird überprüft, ob die IMA als wettbewerbspolitisches Instrument theoretisch, rechtlich und konzeptionell adäquat ist, um die Erzeugung von Innovationen durch Fusionskontrolle zu optimieren.

Anderson et al (2006, p. 1) states that customer value proposition is one of the most widely used terms in business in recent years. So it is important that a company is able to help customers understand the superior value of the products or service offered. Under pressure to keep costs down, customers may only look at the price and so it is important to think about the customer value proposition but also the comparison to the competitors of a specific market environment. This should flow into this assignment as well. Another problem of product development is that in many companies it is rather influenced by opinions of different sales people then by facts and figures. According Annacchino (2007, p. 101) a lot of companies tend to make a mistake at the product definition step, so that the customer is not really involved in the product development process. In reference to the definition of customer-defined needs there are different ways: ¿ A company can use direct customer surveys to solicit feedback and to obtain information in a direct manner. ¿ Another way is a focused group discussion which allows multiple-person input and prompted discussion to generate ideas. ¿ A third possibility is a suggestion system and communication platform for customers and stakeholders.

Bei den Auktionen im Vereinigten Königreich sowie der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, wurden auf den ersten Blick ausserordentlich hohe Ergebnisse erzielt, in anderen Ländern wie Dänemark oder der Schweiz dagegen erstaunlich niedrige, diese Varianz erscheint erklärungsbedürftig. Sicherlich könnte man nun argumentieren, dass die Unterschiede in den erzielten Auktionserlösen geographische und Länderspezifische Ursachen haben, so sind prinzipiell kleine Länder mit hoher Bevölkerungsdichte ein interessanterer Markt als grosse Länder mit geringerer Bevölkerungsdichte. Basierend auf solch einem Erklärungsansatz, und wenn man noch das Kriterium der Lage des Landes, Wettbewerb im Markt und der Kaufkraft seiner Bevölkerung hinzu zieht, müsste, wie es auch Klemperer (2003, S.151) darstellt, das höchste Ergebnis in einem Land wie der Schweiz zu erzielen sein. Tatsächlich weichen die erzielten Ergebnisse erheblich von den Werten ab, die sich auf solche Art und Weise erklären liessen. Gegenstand der folgenden Seminararbeit wird die Analyse der Auktionsergebnisse der europäischen UMTS-Auktionen vor dem Hintergrund der Auktionstheorie sein. Three main determinants were identified during more than 30 years of research: 1. The size of the block 2. The legal and regulatory environment 3. The type of blockholder This work uses the acquisition of voting blocks by different types of acquirers (point 3) to determine how the shareholder structure in Germany (point 2) influences the valuation of a firm. It is demonstrated that the heterogeneity between block acquirers has to be taken into account, i.e. the size of a block (acquisition) itself (point 1) is not a distinctive enough instrument to determine valuation aspects. The main results are that a block acquisition by banks in Germany results in a negative value effect. A cumulated abnormal return (CAR) of -2.7% in the event-period [-20,20] is the (average) consequence of a block-acquisition by a bank. A strong and highly significant result is the positive valuation effect when hedge funds acquire blocks in their targets. Average cumulated abnormal return is 5% in the period [-20,-1]. Corporations as block-acquirer cause also positive CAR¿s (1%). No significant effects are found following the announcement by mutual funds, insurances and individual investors. The work proceeds as follows: In chapter 2 the literature on general corporate governance and especially the literature concerned with the relation between shareholder structure and valuation is reviewed. The data for this study and its legal sources is described in chapter 3 and chapter 4 gives a short descriptive statistic. The main chapter, chapter 5, starts with an explanation why the event-study methodology is especially eligible to answer the question of how blockholding influences valuation. Then the used methodology is described and the results of the empirical work presented. These are put in the context of the respective literature and research. Chapter 6 is a short summary of the most important findings and concludes the work.

This development has been accompanied by the emergence of spot markets where electricity is traded between producer and purchaser. Since the price charged to the end-customer turns out to be more exposed to market prices of electricity, the need for derivatives with a risk management purpose arises. A more recent asset class such as structured products may be used as a risk management tool. This paper focuses on the pricing of various structured products with the Swiss energy price indices as an underlying. Since electricity has particular features that result in a peculiar stochastic process, the pricing of electricity derivatives cannot rely on traditional pricing formulas that have been developed for equity or commodity underlyings. Rather, there is a need for a dynamic model that captures the unique characteristics of electricity. In this paper, a new jump diffusion process is proposed and estimated that is able to incorporate the Swiss electricity price properties. Building on this model, a Monte Carlo simulation is applied that allows one to price differing electricity derivatives that are embedded in structured products. Using the option pricing results, the feasibility and attractiveness of a defined range of structured products is investigated. In order to include the special properties of electricity, new structured products are developed that are more appropriate as risk management tools.
