Essay from the year 2008 in the subject Politics - Political Theory and the History of Ideas Journal, grade: 85%= good, University of Kerala (Department of Political Science), course: Political Theory- Marxian Tradition, language: English, abstract: This essay seeks to evaluate the differences between Maoist ideology and classical Marxist thought. Although Mao himself never denied his Marxist roots, a few significant deviations can be identified that, this essay suggests, have their origin in Mao's focus on practical realisation. While Marx undeniably provided the far more coherent theoretical framework for a proletarian revolution, this framework turned out to be practically useless whenever the ground conditions (such as an industrialised society with a conscious proletariate) were not met. Since all successfull revolutions of the 20th century took place in societies where according to classical Marxism they should not have, Maoism as an ideological and revolutionary guideline that actually worked in unfavourable conditions of underdevelopment and dependency became far more appealing.

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Orientalism / Sinology - Miscellaneous, grade: A+, Ewha Womans University (International Cyber University), course: Geography of Korea, language: English, abstract: The task on which this paper is based, was to explore a specific aspect of the Korean geography. Thus, as part of the geography of Korea, the Demilitarized Zone, which separates North Korea and South Korea, was chosen. This place is especially interesting for German people because for nearly 40 years one of the most obvious cases of spatial segregation through ideologies was Germany¿s separation manifested in the Berlin Wall. The aim of this paper is to give an overview over the most important aspects related to the Demilitarized Zone. Therefore, in the main part some basic facts about South and North Korea will be introduced, followed by an analysis of the zone itself, which is separated in two parts. The first part deals with the history of the separation of the Koreas, while the second part describes the location. At the end of the paper a conclusion will be drawn.

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Orientalism / Sinology - Miscellaneous, grade: A+, , course: Geography of Korea, 10 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Due to the task of analyzing a popular Korean movie concerning the geographic aspects involved, the movie "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter ... and Spring" directed by Ki-Duk Kim in 2003 was chosen. It is an interesting and convincing movie, also shown on international film festivals, which tells the story of the life of a Korean Buddhist monk from his early childhood to the late time of his life, as well as from his time as a novice to his own enlightenment as a master. The aim of this paper is to analyze the movie regarding geographical aspects and show the relation to the plot of the story. As this is a movie, which benefits from the impressing pictures of the nature that play a key role for the story, several aspects of geography can be displayed. As already mentioned in the title of the movie, there are five parts, which play a special role, each of them showing a different stage in the monks life and being an episode of the film. These five scenes will be analyzed individually and then all scenes will be compared in a conclusion, where also the main findings on the film and its geographic aspects will be indicated. The aspects concerning geography are predominantly the changing seasons, but there will also be some others, which will be introduced later on.

Diploma Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 2.0, University of Applied Sciences Essen, language: English, abstract: On the one hand, it is often said that the manufacturing and service companies in the industrialised countries are well organised, the business processes are well managed, so the companies are able to work effectively and efficiently. On the other hand, a lot of companies, even big corporations, have gone bankrupt over the last years, because of their confusing and inefficient business process organisation, which also led the management to take wrong decisions. So how do these two statements match? Hence it has become more important for companies, especially for those which are globally organised, to focus on their business processes to either optimise or eliminate the one which adds no value. In this context it is an important approach to find out, in what way the most important methods of BPM, BPR, and Six Sigma can help organisations to face the challenges of today's turbulent marketplaces.

Politik - Thema: Sonstiges, einseitig bedruckt, Note: 2,3 (B), Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, 30 Eintragungen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Englisch, Abstract: Winston Churchill coined the term Special Relationship in his famous speech in Fulton, Missouri in 1946. This term characterises the unparalleled close Anglo-American relations during the Second World War and in the time thereafter. The shared perception that Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union constituted major external threats to their well-being bound the societies and leaderships of Great Britain and the United States together. The looming menace ceased to exist after the break-up of the Soviet Union and the demise of Communism, and for several authors so did the raison d¿être of the Special Relationship as well. It was more however that brought these two countries together than the shared perception of a communist threat. Why is it that "neither country has fully adjusted its mind to thinking of the members of the other society as foreigners", and that Americans still refer to Britain as the "mother country" every now and then? Why do certain authors call Britain the "fortified outpost of the Anglo-Saxon race" or the "unsinkable aircraft carrier"? And is it just by chance that fictional author George Orwell calls Britain "Airstrip One" and associates it with North America in his novel "1984"? Is it a coincidence or are these - admittedly vague - expressions signs of subtle yet overarching bonds between the two countries? This work will analyse and discuss various aspects of Anglo-American relations. The apparent cooperation in the fields of foreign and security policy will be assessed, as well as the more disguised realm of military and intelligence collaboration. Following is a chapter about two aspects that dominate our time, economy and business in the Anglo-American relationship. The last chapter attempts to illuminate the obscure field of "private" relations between the Anglo-American nations, as well as the importance of the personal relationships between the individual Presidents and Prime Ministers. For a better understanding of Anglo-American Affairs the common backgrounds of the two countries are assessed historically, culturally and in terms of language. The question or the leitmotif on which this work is be based asks whether the concept of a Special Relationship in current Anglo-American relations is still a de facto reality or just a myth, that lingers on from the shared experience of the two World wars: Does the weary British Lion still enjoy a remarkably "special" relationship with the almighty American Eagle?

Master's Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Art - Miscellaneous, grade: B (ECTS), 8 out of 10, University of Groningen, course: Double-Degree Erasmus Mundus Master Course "Euroculture: Europe in the Wider World", language: English, abstract: Beginning with the last decades of the 20th century it has been an unprecedented tendency to create outposts of big museums abroad. The opening of the Hermitage-Guggenheim Exhibition Centre in Las Vegas and the decision of creating a filial branch of the Louvre in Abu-Dhabi in 2012 can serve as an illustrative example of this phenomenon. The purpose of the present Master Thesis is to show that despite political, economic and linguistic diversities that exist between the Netherlands and Russia, strong cultural ties and cross-cultural dialogues have remained since the 18th century and are flourishing nowadays. I will demonstrate what has been done in practice in order to strengthen international cross-cultural bonds and to introduce foreign cultural heritage abroad in particular. The aim of the Master Thesis is to study the examples of museum models in the 21st century illustrated by the case study of the Hermitage Amsterdam Complex and the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum ¿satellite¿ museums. Taking into account the importance and special significance of the latter, the choice of that particular case study seems rational and illustrative. I will present the motives and goals of ¿expansion¿ tendencies of large art museums in the Netherlands and in Spain. I will elaborate on difference in motives beyond the opening of museums¿ outposts by Russian and by American museums in the European Union. What are the crucial steps the museum authorities tend to undertake in order to safeguard and promote the art Europe-wide? I will point out how art mobility is connected to the present area of globalization. In my Master Thesis I will explore the following question: ¿Can the creation of museum ¿satellites¿ abroad be seen as the future model of museums¿ development?¿ In order to address this question the present paper is structured around four chapters. In the beginning of the Master Thesis I explore the notion of European museum and important features of Russian and Dutch cultural policies. Further on, I narrow down my research of art mobility by using the case of museum ¿satellites¿ created by the Hermitage and Guggenheim networks. Finally, I describe main principles of museum expansion under the challenges of modern times in order to identify possible museum models.

With these words Barbara Pavlock (B.Pavlock, Horace's invitation poems to Maecenas: gifts to a patron, in: Ramus 11 (1982), 79) starts her article about the invitation poems of Horace, and for a long time it really seemed to most of the people that this relationship was an ideal friendship, but this point of view changed within the last decades. This paper is giving a short view on the relationship between Maecenas and Horace from the Horacian point of view, extracted from the Odes I - III of Horace.

Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject Business economics - Trade and Distribution, grade: 1,3 (A), University of Applied Sciences Mainz (-), course: European Integration, language: English, abstract: During the last two decades, regional trading blocs and intra-regional trade have been gradually built up. Moves towards a liberalisation of international trade have led to the formation of large and increasingly regional trading blocks. Advantages deriving from international trade include political stability and overall growth. The three largest and best-established trading regions worldwide are NAFTA, EU and Asia-Pacific (ASEAN and APEC). Without being a member or contracting party, the European Union already participated in trade negotiations of GATT, OECD and UN and has also favoured Mercosur¿s process of regional integration from its very conception in 1991. Today Mercosur is the world¿s fourth largest single market, after the EU, the USA and Japan. Mercosur¿s aim to become a real common market forms the main element in the creation of an association between both regions. This book mainly concentrates on the bilateral negotiations on trade issues between the European Union and Mercosur.

Master's Thesis from the year 2004 in the subject Business economics - Offline Marketing and Online Marketing, grade: A-, ESG Management School, Paris, language: English, abstract: European Media is writing daily articles about the situation of the European airline business. The European airline market is, at the moment, with all the important changes and actual turbulences, the most dynamic industry sector. Some of these changes are: The creation of new low-cost airlines in Europe, like Germanwings (Germany), Volareweb (Italy), and Sky Europe (Slovakia); The disappearance and bankruptcy of airlines, such as V-Bird (Netherlands) and Swissair; Air France merges with KLM to become the worlds biggest airline group; A significant increase of purchases of airplanes by Arabic airlines. This thesis focuses on the low-cost airlines, which arrived in Europe during the last 10 years and changed micro and macro environment of the airline business. Low-cost airlines like Ryanair and EasyJet make big profits while Alitalia, British Airways, Air France, and Lufthansa are having enormous problems. The general opinion is that low-cost airlines are successful because of its lower cost in production, and therefore of its lower price they can offer to the customers. The thesis will show that the cost factor is not the only reason for the success of low-cost airlines: "Being cheap is not enough" The objective of the thesis is to find other reasons which explain the success of low-cost airlines by analysing the marketing development of European low-cost airlines with its strategies, positioning, customer satisfaction etc. Of special interest: The question how the low-cost trend changes the marketing and the behaviour of the traditional airlines and how do the customers react. As reaction to this trend the traditional airlines are reducing at the moment costs in salary, distribution, maintenance etc. to survive. This is not enough. The thesis mentions marketing ideas and possibilities of how to compete against low-cost airlines, either by copying successful marketing methods of these airlines or by finding new innovative methods, fresh ideas and a new positioning. The main objectives for my thesis are: Is the success of low-cost airlines only a short term event or is it a successful business marketing concept? Are the traditional airlines in danger? Is the Low Cost concept the better concept? What can traditional airlines learn from the marketing methods of low-cost airlines?

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject American Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,0, University of Hamburg (Amerikanistik), language: English, abstract: What is the most likely performed action of a person who stumbles over a yet to him unknown or unfamiliar word? It is neither the internet nor the television (which holds plenty of information and is without a doubt the most important source in requiring recent news) but the dictionary he will seek his information in. In the time of globalization, the influence and significance of communicating with humans of different speaking languages is raising. Language is first of all a means of communication and it is no exaggeration if one is proclaiming that knowing more than the native tongue and being at least bilingual has become a normalcy. If we want to understand and communicate with people of other nations, we ultimately have to learn their language and vice versa. Dictionaries provide the basic information if it is about learning something of different languages. The importance of the dictionary becomes evident by the fact that over 90 % of households in Britain possess at least one dictionary, therefore making it far more popular than the Bible, which was to be found in about 80 % of households in England in 1983, according to the Bible Society. 1 The dictionary being referred to in this term paper is one particular type of dictionary, namely the monolingual dictionary for the adult native speaker of English. The aim of this work is to outline the history as well as the structure of a common dictionary. How is it arranged, what content and information does it provide and what purposes does it fulfil? These and other questions will be subjects of concern. Besides dictionaries, other helpful sources exist in attaining a language¿s vocabulary, phrases and synonyms. One of these excellent sources is a thesaurus, which will be the subject of the second half in this term paper. Stress is being put on the history as well as the structure and content of a thesaurus.

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Economic and Social History, grade: 1,0, European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) (Lehrstuhl für Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeschichte der Neuzeit), course: The Great Divergence. History and Legacy of Industrialization in Europe and Asia, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this paper is the discussion of a recent article presented by Joel Mokyr who offered, according to his own words, a new ¿variant of the European Miracle question¿1. The main thesis of his article The Great Synergy: the European Enlightenment as a factor in Modern Economic growth points to the European Enlightenment as being a crucial factor for attaining and establishing modern, i.e. sustainable economic growth in Europe once the British Industrial Revolution had overcome its humble beginnings at the end of the eighteenth century. Mokyr argues that the stability of economic growth which was reached in Europe after 1825 was to a great extent due to a new attitude towards the relation between technology and progress. This new attitude was the result of a development that had its roots in the European Enlightenment where the foundations for a new understanding of science and technology were laid. The outcome of this development was the unique ¿idea of research¿ that made scientists and craftsmen cooperate, giving way to a very fruitful convergence of science and technology that helped making sustainable economic growth possible. This evolution mingled with the modification of institutional mechanisms which was a result of the Enlightenment, too. These two trends both formed a ¿Great Synergy¿ that finally yielded the ¿European Miracle¿. To prove and strengthen his thesis, Mokyr compares the history of European sciences with those practiced in China coming to see that Chinese sciences were confined to and restricted by the Mandarin rulers, thus a situation similar to pre-enlightened Europe. But his comparisons to the Asian continent are limited to the situation in China. It could therefore be telling to have a look at Indian sciences, especially when discovering that India ¿had a wellestablished scientific and technological tradition of its own long before being subjected to an extended period of European colonial rule¿2. Going deeper into Indian history we will see, that on top of that, before the colonization by the British, ¿traditional knowledge generated large-scale economic productivity for Indians¿3. Departing from these considerations, the present paper will put Mokyr¿s assumption under inspection examining the Indian history of science and technology. The arising problem is thus twofold, implicating questions that are clearly inter-related with each other and which are touching fields both of science and economy. [...]

grin arbitrariness and complex signs

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,3, University of Leipzig (Institut für Anglistik), course: Motivation and Arbitrariness in the English Language, language: English, abstract: The following essay wants to draw attention to the relation between motivation and ar-bitrariness within complex linguistic signs. Modern linguistics tries to establish motivation within the language system and by this often seems to negotiate arbitrariness. Bolinger claimed in 1980: ¿Arbitrary and conventional is a fitting description of distinctive sounds, less so of words, even less of sentences, and beyond that scarcely fits at all¿ (Fischer & Nänny, 1999, p. xxi). Dirven and Verspoor proclaim that ¿most of the complex forms of lan-guage¿are¿not arbitrary, but transparent or motivated¿ (Dirven & Verspoor, p. 21). Motivation is used to construct convincing explanations for sometimes mystified phe-nomena in a language. Motivated by C.S. Peirce¿s sign system, linguistic signs are recently moved from a box signed ¿symbol¿ into a box signed ¿icon¿. Language by this is meant to be a more or less predictable act, which is based on translucent regularities and ordering princi-ples. Structural similarities are the basis of motivation, which examines and proclaims ordeing principles in all spheres of the language: phonology, morphology, lexicon and semantics Motivation even obstructs the syntax of a language. Three main ideas underlie the principle of motivation: (i) sequential ordering, (ii) quan-tity and (iii) proximity. Simplified, the ideas can be summarized as follows: (i) arrangement of linguistic elements according to temporal events, like he opened the door and came in or veni, vidi, vici; (ii) the amount of meaning is reflected in the amount of linguistic form , like I go ¿ I went ¿ I had gone or a car ¿ a green car ¿ a green convertible; (iii) conceptual distance is reflected in formal distance, like I made her leave ¿ I wanted her to leave ¿ I wished she would leave. Essential to all three principles of iconicity is the kind of motivation they supply. What can be identified by sequential ordering, quantity and proximity is the formal and conceptual structure of a linguistic sign. Metaphorically speaking, motivation provides the bones (formal structure) and the muscles (conceptual structure) to complex linguistic sign. What motiva-tion can neither answer nor negotiate is the question of element¿s arbitrariness, and why a certain concept is conventionally linked to a representing sound pattern. Moreover, it is the arbitrary character of simplex forms, which enables the understanding of complex signs. The aim of this paper is to raise an awareness for the inseparable connection of arbi-trariness and motivation in the analysis of complex signs. This aim will be achieved in three steps. First, the distinction between simplex and complex sign is focused, followed by a short introduction of the...

Examination Thesis from the year 2004 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, University of Dusseldorf "Heinrich Heine" (Anglistisches Institut III), language: English, abstract: In many parts of the world English is used as the main communicative device between people of different mother languages. In some areas it is known as the native tongue, in other countries, for instance in Germany, it is regarded as a second and global language. There are cases though in which the English language serves a different purpose, namely works as a political way to express certain themes. In many former British colonies the English language was introduced and indoctrinated on the native people as the language of government, police, business and law. Of course, there were other native languages before the appearance of the British and there still remain local dialects and tongues today. Nevertheless through time the sharp lines between local dialects and the language of the government have vanished. This process of development or melting of two languages, that is English and one local language of the old inhabitants of the place is often referred to as Pidginization and Creolization in literature. Pidgins are believed to be the first step of the development from a very simple basic language to a more complex one with native speakers through Creolization in later stages. It is quite difficult to say whether a language that is regarded as a World English today can be seen as being more complicated or as being simpler than Standard British English. In the very first part of this work I will present some ideas and opinions scholars have uttered about the problem of simplification and complexification lately. Since the topic of World Englishes includes Creolization and Creole studies most evidence I will provide will examine whether Creoles in general are more complex or simpler than their respective mother tongue. No one has so far exclusively studied World Englishes comparatively to Standard Englishes in order to make judgements about complexity and simplicity as scholars have done about Creoles. I will provide examples from World Englishes and I am going to try to judge whether certain findings I have made classify that language as being more complex or simpler than Standard British English concerning grammar and syntax. Rounding up this paper in the end I hope that I can make some comments whether it is possible to prove the idea of Simplification or oppose it.

Diploma Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1,3, European Business School - International University Schloss Reichartshausen Oestrich-Winkel, language: English, abstract: This paper aims at establishing a link between the average level of initial return of IPO shares, existing underpricing explanations and the dot-com bubble. In years prior to the boom of the new economy, underpricing was explained by various theories, which have extensively been developed since decades. However, in the years 1998 to 2001 IPOs were overly underpriced, leading to assumptions about behavioural aspects and investor irrationality. Analysing a comprehensive dataset of 371 IPOs on the Frankfurter Börse between 1997 and 2007, this paper aims at providing evidence that the observed lower levels of initial returns in recent years can indeed be aligned with existing theories on the basis of rational behaviour of market participants. Firstly, the IPO process and its major participants will be presented followed by a review of relevant studies on the IPO phenomenon. In the next step, established underpricing theories are recapitulated. A descriptive analysis of the data sample points out the particularities concerning the company and transaction characteristics of the sample firms. In a last step, a regression analysis relates various proxies for information asymmetry to established underpricing theories. It gives reason to believe that the irrationality at the turn of the century has vanished and that underpricing can again be explained by established theories.

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Economics - Foreign Trade Theory, Trade Policy, grade: A-, University of Auckland (Business School - Faculty of Economics), course: Trade & Development, language: English, abstract: There has been a lot of work on the relation between openness and economic growth, with results being ambiguous. A study done by Sachs and Warner (1995), using a sample of 135 countries, has shown that there is a positive correlation between openness and growth, e.g. that trade liberalisation fosters economic performance. The assumptions and country categorisations of this study have been criticised by Rodriguez and Rodrik (2000); they concluded that low tariff rates do not necessarily imply higher growth rates but that tariff protection exceeding a certain level stifles growth. Dollar and Kray (cited in Santos-Paulino and Thirlwall, 2004) compared different sets of countries with each other and found out that changes in growth rates are positively correlated with the share of trade and thus greater openness has accelerated economic growth. This essay compares the foreign trade policy of Mexico and Costa Rica. Even though both countries pursued the same policies, some differences can be found. Both implemented a strategy of import-substituting industrialisation until the serious crisis at the beginning of the 1980s, followed by a period of extensive trade liberalisation. This was due to pressure put on by the international institutions such as IMF or World Bank. While Mexico opened up its market, Costa Rica went further and lowered the import barriers. They put a strong emphasis on attracting foreign direct investment. With an average annual growth rate of 4.78 percent in Costa Rica and 4.43 percent in Mexico over the last four decades both countries achieved a strong economic growth exceeding the average of all other Latin American countries. However a positive interrelation between openness and growth could not be found in this study. This essay is structured in four main parts. Section II of this paper deals with the fundamental comparability of Mexico and Costa Rica. Section III portrays the foreign trade policies of both countries and illustrates the main similarities and differences. The development of growth is outlined in Section IV. Section V concludes the paper.
