Essay from the year 2008 in the subject Sociology - Political Sociology, Majorities, Minorities, grade: 2,0, University of Siegen, course: Migration Matters 2, language: English, abstract: Since the 1990s, in Juárez, Mexico, there have taken place scores of murders of young Mexican women. They are chased by their murderers on their ways home from the so called ¿maquiladoras¿, which are factories where they work for a little sum of money and produce TVs or computers for the USA at the assembly lines. The young women are violated and raped by their kidnappers and later their dead bodies are buried somewhere in the desert of Mexico. Nevertheless, the police and the whole government of Juárez try to camouflage these events. The number of victims, published by the police, is about 375 women, whereas the estimated number of unreported cases is about 5000. Gregory Nava made these true events to the story of his movie Bordertown from 2006. The tortures the women of Juárez have to experience and the underlying topic of border-crossing are the essential subjects of Bordertwon. Furthermore, within his movie, he has chosen a special way of communicating these topics to the viewer: he makes use of media, respectively investigative media, in order to show how hard it is to explore this subject. So, not only he himself uses media as an organ of communication but he moreover embeds the investigation of certain matters into his movie. Nowadays media is the most important institution of distributing and communicating information and of transmitting one¿s own perspective about certain topics. This is not only done by directors like in the case of Gregory Nava but by everyone who stands in the centre of a certain field ¿ for instance politicians or celebrities. As Wilma de Jong, Martin Shaw and Neil Stammers have formulated in their introduction of Global Activism, Global Media (2005): ¿Media appear to be increasingly globalised, as national television, press, etc. are subsumed in gigantic worldwide flows of information and ideas, symbolized by the internet which offers social and political actors new opportunities for more direct communication.¿ So, media ¿ in our time better said ¿mass mediä ¿ stands for a direct but widely spread transmission of information to the audience. People, who decide to transmit certain messages through media ¿ in this case for instance Gregory Nava and his protagonists from Bordertown ¿ have a special aim by acting this way: they want to make a change within the field they are working for. Whether Nava did this successfully or not will be discussed later on in this paper. [...]

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 2,0, Nürtingen University (International Management, Intercultural Communication), 10 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: In terms of globalization, enterprises have to be aware of their own identity, values and thoughts and develop a grasp for interaction with foreign cultures. So it's not only some kind of business behavior necessary, it is also important to know something about the values, morals and attitudes for a better interaction. Even more important is a survey, if you plan a merger or an acquisition with a foreign company. Researches proof, that 50-70 % of all mergers don't succeed. This essay deals with the difficulty of consolidating two different corporate cultures to one common culture. In order to visualize this issue, DaimlerChrysler is taken as an example. Culture is an "everyday thing", it is present in every situation. It is a guideline for living together in large groups, giving rules to act and behave. In most instances these facts are not written down but unexpressed rules. There are many definitions in literature. The most widespread definition is likely "Culture refers to the cumulative deposit of knowledge, experience, beliefs, values, attitudes, meanings, hierarchies, religion, notions of time, roles, spatial relations, concepts of the universe, and material objects and possessions acquired by a group of people in the course of generations through individual and group striving". Already the Egyptians and Romans created their own distinct hierarchies, laws, knowledge bases and values and tried to preserve it over several hundred years. Culture is needed to organize and administrate a group of people or whole population. Nowadays this lead to sophisticated cultures in every country of the world. These cultures are non-static grown individual reflections

grin indian federalism how does

Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: South Asia, grade: 1.0 (A), University of Heidelberg (South Asian Institute for Political Science), course: State and Economy in South Asia, with the example of India, language: English, abstract: Many scholars expected India to drag her feet in the liberalization process, due to the opposition of economically weak groups, negatively affected by a globalized market economy, but politically empowered through institutions created by Indiäs long democratic tradition (Lanyi 2000). The missing of this resistance was one of the most puzzling experiences of the last ten years. Supplementing Rob Jenkins¿ popular thesis that India is going through a "reform by stealth" (Jenkins 1999) led by witty politicians, perfectly able to play the tunes of these various institutions, this article will provide a neo-institutionalist position with emphasize on the impact of the IMF¿s structural adjustments programme on the federal and local level, which led to a change in the formal as well as in the informal institutions themselves. There are four points in Jenkins¿ approach open to criticism and able to undermine the achievements of his research: a) the reductionist and static understanding of institutions b) the neglect of international entrepreneurs and structure influencing institutional policy c) the neglect of specific Indian "realities", forcing institutions to adapt in the face of liberalization d) the overemphasizing on the relevance of informal institutions and corruption as a means to achieve desired political outcomes. The thesis provided in this essay will be that the observed shift towards an increased directive ability of the central government is only a short-term phenomenon masking a steadily accelerating devolution of power that capacitates state- and local authorities to autonomously negotiate their self-interest in a globalized world over the long run. This process not only leads to an obvious need to redesign fiscal federalism, but will also call for an abolition of several centre-favouring precautions of Indian federalism.

grin controlling in ski resorts

Scholary Paper aus dem Jahr 2004 im Fachbereich Wirtschaft - Controlling, einseitig bedruckt, Note: 1,0, Veranstaltung: Controlling in der Praxis, 24 Eintragungen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Englisch, Anmerkungen: with thematic interviews, examples out of the practice (Zugspitzbahn) , Abstract: In the last 50 years winter sport became a major economical size in mountain regions, especially in the European Alps and the Rocky Mountains. Until 1979 a lot of new ski resorts were developed. At the beginning of the 80¿s the politicians intervened in the wild extension in the Alps and organized the development of this natural space. The rapid expansion was finished.1 In the 80¿s and 90¿s, the enterprises began to integrate further parts of the value chain. Pure lift operators became big ski resort companies. From the beginning of the 90¿s the growth of winter sportsmen stagnated.2 In total there are about 32 million skiers in Europe.3 Nowadays it is nearly impossible to open new resorts. Consequently the ski resort companies are more asked to improve their services, make up combinations with other resorts, built up co- operations or downsize the companies to compete with other ski resorts in the mountains. This market is really hard battled and the suppliers try to find their niches like family-, pure sport- or snowboard resorts. They started to concentrate on their core competencies at the end of the 90¿s and invested huge amounts of money to upgrade the important transport possibilities like chair lifts or gondolas in the whole resorts. Most of the smaller and middle sized ski resorts work with deficit.4 This made it extremely important in the 90¿s for businesses to introduce new divisions in the organizational structure to control and support the management.5 Nowadays only about 50 percent of the ski resorts know Controlling as a division of the management; therefore they often invest money without knowing the affects of it.6 The increasing importance of Controlling in ski resorts is shown by the fact that PwC Switzerland has got an own team for this subject. Due to the shortness of this seminar paper there is only a coarse outline of the subject with a focal point on medium and big sized companies represented with it.

Essay aus dem Jahr 2004 im Fachbereich Wirtschaft - Marketing, Unternehmenskommunikation, CRM, Marktforschung, einseitig bedruckt, Note: 2,0, 14 Eintragungen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Englisch, Anmerkungen: An essay showing the buying behaviour and marketing decisions. Real example: A video camera purchased in a multimedia store. , Abstract: "Compact and feature rich, the Sony DCR-PC109 MiniDV Handy cam is the perfect camcorder for people who demand quality and convenience. Featuring a large 2.5" hybrid Swivel Screen LCD display, Super Night Shot Plus infrared recording system, Super Steady Shot image stabilization, and a big 1.0 mega pixel Advanced HAD imaging device, the DCRPC109 provides all the punch of a camera twice its size."(Fortress leaflet¿07/2004) This statement taken from a 'Fortress store'-leaflet, which was inside the South China Post newspaper, I was glancing through during my internship in Hong Kong last summer. Fortress is a well established, national company chain that specialises in electronic goods services, such as portable cameras, DVD players, Hi-fi systems, etc. all over Hong Kong. The leaflet was advertising the latest Sony hand camcorder, which was the smallest available camera on the market. I decided to talk about this product because first of all I always wanted a unique hand camera that allows doing more than just take a picture and secondly I remember clearly all the various stages I went through before and during the purchase. To begin with, I am going to describe and explain firstly the important buying behaviours I have exhibited or was involved in. Why did I buy the product? Did I do some intensive research prior to the purchase? What attracted me in this particular item? After that I will explain my perceptions of the marketing decisions that the organisation selling to me had made and finally I will conclude in what ways the selling organisation might have marketed to me more effectively and I will justify my suggested improvements.

Essay from the year 1999 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,5 (A), University of Tubingen (American Studies), course: PS I Literatur - Introduction to Literature Studies with the example of the american drama, language: English, abstract: This term paper will show to what a great extent society is influenced by men. I suggest that in Marsha Norman¿s play ¿Getting Out¿ her protagonist Arlene would never have faced so many problems in life, let alone would have become criminal, if men did not possess such a great power over society. Men being in power throughout the world was certainly the worst thing that could ever have happened in human history, Arlene being a representative of all the women living and having lived on earth, even if a very extreme one. But in favor of men, I claim that men are not really guilty either because society has become autonomous and cannot be controlled anymore. The basis for my thesis is Gretchen Cline¿s essay entitled ¿The Impossibility of Getting Out ¿ The Psychopolitics of the family in Marsha Norman¿s Getting Out¿ which contains feminist, psychoanalytic and existential frameworks to show Arlene Holsclaw¿s oppression within a family that parallels the institutions that bind her. Cline herself uses Walter Davis¿ theory of the ¿crypt¿ to analyze Arlene¿s familial and the subsequent social scapegoating in order to show how women are shaped by a society in which the most moral institutions, such as family and religion, justify violation and oppression.

Essay from the year 2009 in the subject Philosophy - Practical (Ethics, Aesthetics, Culture, Nature, Right, ...), grade: 1,7, University of Bayreuth, language: English, abstract: Some European countries, especially in Eastern Europe, for example the Czech Republic and Slovakia, recently introduced a 'flat tax' system. Furthermore in other European countries like Germany and Switzerland there are controversial discussions about introducing a flat rate tax system. The aim of this essay is to analyse a flat rate tax system and to try to figure out if a flat rate tax system is indeed inferior to a progressive tax rate system with respect to justice in taxation.
