In the 19th century, there were a number of attempts to use Hegel‹s aesthetics for research on art history. Heinrich Gustav Hotho was one of the main proponents of this project of linking philosophical foundations and empirical knowledge. The lecture on aesthetics in this work, which he held in 1833 at the same time as he was working on the edition of Hegel‹s ‹Aesthetics‹; is particularly revealing for Hotho‹s understanding of the science of art. Based on Hegel, but with a more dialectical reasoning, in this work he created the structure of aesthetics. This volume contains a detailed transcript of Hotho‹s lecture on aesthetics, written by Hegel‹s son Immanuel, whose comments in the margins have also been reproduced. There is an introduction by the editor, detailed annotations, an index of names as well as a comprehensive bibliography on the subjects dealt with in the volume.

The introductory lecture held in the winter of 1809 discusses the road leading from a vague premonition of the truth to clear scientific knowledge. As is the case with all theories of science developed during the later years of a philosopher’s life, the ›Wissenschaftslehre 1810‹ (Epistemology 1810) is guided by the following basic idea: Knowledge is, in accordance with its fundamental character, an image of the absolute. It is in self-penetration that this knowledge rises from lower principles to continuously higher forms of reflection (“schemata”) of its regularity, whereby the individual versions up to 1814 all began with continuously higher standpoints. In the introductory lecture held in October of 1810, Fichte deals with the question of how it is possible to convey empirical, historical and psychic knowledge. The purpose of the ›Thatsachen des Bewusstseyns‹ (Facts of Consciousness) (1810/1811) is to lead from everyday consciousness to the scientific level, as did the Platner lectures held during his time in Jena. Based on the observation of factual-hypothetical fields of knowledge they rise to their principles, not yet however in their complete systematic context.

In its coherence and differentiation, Fichte‹s talk on ‹Wissenschaftslehre 1811‹ (Epistemology 1811) is the climax of his later philosophy. The hypothetical starting point is the statement that »the absolute appears». He proves this assertion by using a continuous deduction of the stages of the appearance of the absolute. The ‹Epistemology‹ was followed by Fichte‹s introductory lecture ‹Über das Wesen der Philosophie‹ (On the Nature of Philosophy), in three transcripts by colleagues, in which Fichte deals particularly with the different methods in the sciences. The lectures, published here for the first time, on ‹The Facts of Consciousness‹; held in the winter semester of 1811/12 (in the transcripts of his colleagues in Halle) give an objective account of all possibilities of knowledge and serve as a (didactic) prerequisite for understanding the ‹Epistemology‹. The volume also includes a detailed introduction which acknowledges Fichte‹s lecturing in Berlin, describes the entire series of lectures he held in Berlin and also deals with the individual content of the works. The current bibliography of secondary literature for the texts in Volumes I and II of the student text edition is also very useful.

The edition by Wilhelm Bolin and Friedrich Jodl was published by our company for the first time between 1903 and 1911 in 10 volumes. Among the works written in his youth, this is the first publication of two of them, both of which are indispensable for gaining insight into Feuerbach‹s (1804-1872) philosophical development: his dissertation from 1828 and the ›Gedanken über Tod und Unsterblichkeit‹ (Thoughts on Death and Immortality) published anonymously in 1830, a work which denied Feuerbach a university career for all of his life. The youthful works contain a chronological table as well as a bibliography of the works by and about Feuerbach. This reprint contains previously unpublished Feuerbach letters which have been added to the edition of the letters from and by Feuerbach, edited by W. Bolin and published in 1904. Among the letters which have been added there are 18 addressed to Arnold Ruge, and these provide some insight into the Left or Young Hegelians who were in the process of formation.

Which responsibility can in a sensible way be ascribed to a physician? In order to settle this question I start by investigating the epistemological status of medicine and the role of the physician. Medicine can best be described as a practical science whose consequences for a theory of action have a lasting influence on the physician´s responsibility. Falling back upon the philosophical discussion on the term responsibility in the 20th century, I will show that responsibility without normative criteria remains a hollow phrase. Because traditional values are given in medicine and are furthermore well-founded, and because the physician´s work bears just the mark of complexity that among other things ›called for responsibility‹; the term ›responsibility‹ is very well suitable to investigate the physician´s work. As a term bearing at least six different realtions, ›responsibilty‹ allows a differentiated analysis of the physician´s action with its different levels and addresses. Due to the immanent structures of his action the physician is responsible for certain, precisely to be phrased ways of behaviour, for working according to the rules of the medical profession and for a disposition. None of these levels can be done without as they do not replace one another. The following chapters examine the boundaries of the physician´s responsibility. Even with reference to history the physician should in cases of conflict above all be responsible to his patient. Cases of conflict should be avoided in the following manner: If a certain kind of behaviour in the relationship between physician and patient cannot be allowed due to social considerations this should be decided beforehand by the authority in charge, and these questions should just not fall in the physician´s realm of consideration. In questions of allocation it is true that a responsibility for rationalization has to be ascribed to the physician, but under no circumstances should he be in charge of rationing as this would exceed the unifying quality of the various responsibilities and have an extremely disadvantageous effect on the relationship between physician and patient. Explosive subjects such as abortion or euthanasia can also not be settled by way of the physician´s responsibility.

The focus of the texts in this volume is upon Fichte's development of the ›Wissenschaftslehre‹.
