Shaftesbury’s writings on the visual arts have previously either never been published or, although available in print, not presented in the form of a reliable critical edition. This volume remedies that situation. Although his ›Second Characters‹; planned as companion-piece for ›Characteristicks‹; was unfinished at the time of Shaftesbury’s death, the surviving fragmentary collection of texts provides a valuable insight into the author’s aesthetics, offering at the same time a fundamental contribution to our knowledge of eighteenth-century art theory. – Shaftesbury’s instructions to the Italian painter Paolo de Matteis were put to paper as ›The Judgment of Hercules‹; a tract which stands in terms of contents between the traditional 'ut pictura poesis' and Lessing’s ›Laokoon‹. The English version is accompanied here by not only a new German translation, but also Shaftesbury’s original French text, as well as colour plates showing the three versions of de Matteis’s painting. ›A Letter Concerning Design‹ (edited here with a German translation), with its far-reaching political implications, and ›Plasticks‹ – the impressive torso of what was intended as a systematic discussion of art history and theory – similarly reveal the importance for scholarship today of Shaftesbury’s thinking on art.

Using Shaftesbury‹s philosophy of the forms of life, Angelica Baum, examines a new concept that was edging itself into the philosophy discourse around 1700 under the name »feeling.» Shaftesbury‹s »discovery« of feeling had sweeping anthropological, ethical and aesthetic consequences: It questions the uniformity of human nature and is combined with a critical reflection of the bounds of reason which reflects the fact that human action is not primarily and exclusively governed by reason. This opens up an area of valuable experience which leads to the moral sense theory and to aesthetics. In this conflict between aesthetics and ethics, the author does a philosophical analysis of the term »feeling» and its complexity.

›Subreption and Dialectic in Kant‹ has two goals. In the first place, it traces the history of the concept of subreption up to the philosophy of Kant. Secondly, it investigates the relation between Kant‹s thesis that there is a dialectic of reason and the doctrine of subreption. – In Roman law, someone commits a subreption when he attains an advantage through the concealment of important facts. In philosophy the concept of subreption is deployed from the time of Jungius and Leibniz (using the Latin term »vitium subreptionis« or »error of subreption« in order to criticize methodical errors in philosophical argumentation. In the first half of the eighteenth century, Christian Wolff applies the concept to errors in the empirical verification of statements. The peak of the development of the concept is Kant‹s Dissertation of 1770, in which the chapter on the method of metaphysics centers on how to avoid the »vitium subreptionis metaphysicum«. In the Transcendental Dialectic of the ›Critique of Pure Reason‹; Kant overlays the critique of subreption with a theory of dialectical reason. Yet reason does not appear to be the source of this dialectic. We are therefore left with subreption – a failure of judgment – as the only way of explaining the errors considered in the Transcendental Dialectic. – This work provides the first investigation of the concept of subreption. At the same time it demonstrates the great importance of the concept for the elaboration of Kant‹s philosophy.

Valentin Weigel's theology of mystical speculation represented the culmination of German mysticism in the 16th century. Traditional schools of thinking of various origins are united in Weigel's works. His Protestant-spiritualist piety, which was influenced by Sebastian Franck, drew upon medieval mysticism, primarily upon Eckart, Tauler and the ›Theologia Deutsch‹. His thinking incorporated Boethius' neoplatonist ideas and Paracelsus' ideas on natural philosophy, and he developed them into Christological-cosmosophical speculations. The continuing influence of his thinking, which often emerges unexpectedly, such as for example in the works of Johannes Arndt und Kepler, has presented researchers with many unsolved problems, in particular regarding Böhme's relationship to Weigel and to Weigelianism. They will be able to be solved on the basis of this Weigel edition, which also includes the writings attributed to him. This first complete critical edition of Valentin Weigel's works is based on seminal research done by Winfried Zeller. His study of the handwritten works which have been preserved made it possible to resolve the previously contentious issues regarding the question of authenticity, to determine which writings were definitely done by Weigel, as well as their chronology, and led to the discovery of previously unknown manuscripts.

The ›Chymical Wedding‹ is one of Andreae’s long early works, which incorporates an allegory of the alchemical Ergon into a visionary frame story. The ›Reformation‹ is the German translation of an Italian satire by Trajano Boccalini. In the introduction, Roland Edighoffer, who consulted all the available editions and transcripts for this edition and gives a critical analysis of the variants, discusses the difficult question of Andreae’s part in the Rosicrucian phenomenon.

From 1805 to 1820, Bernard Bolzano was professor of »religious doctrine« (Religionslehre) at the University of Prague. The lectures he had to deliver were part of the so-called »Philosophical Studies« that every student of the university had to complete before he entered the »higher« studies, i.e. the studies of medicine, law or theology. As professor of religious doctrine, Bolzano also had the duty to deliver the homilies on Sundays and holidays during the academic year to all the students of the »Philosophical Studies«. This explains the enormous influence Bolzano exerted through these homilies on the intellectual and political life of Bohemia in his time, whose offshoots reached even the Charta 77 movement in former Czechoslovakia. The chairs of religious doctrine were established by the Austrian emperor Franz at all universities of the Austrian empire in order to shape the students into »good Christians and law-abiding citizens« as it was ordered in a decree. The homilies Bolzano had to deliver at the University of Prague (as did all professors of religious doctrine at Austrian universities) were called ›Erbauungsreden‹ (edifying addresses) or ›exhortations‹. There is evidence for 582 ›Erbauungsreden‹ Bolzano delivered as a professor at the University of Prague of which 414 are extant; of these, 153 have not yet been published at all. The 414 ›Erbauungsreden‹ that are extant have survived in different form: some of them (70) as autographs, i.e. in Bolzano’s own handwriting, others in handwritten copies of Bolzano’s manuscripts, others in notes taken by Bolzano’s students. Several collections of Bolzano’s ›Erbauungsreden‹ have already appeared in print, some of them during Bolzano’s lifetime, while others were published posthumously by his students or other editors. – The new critical edition of Bolzano’s ›Erbauungsreden‹ presents all of them in chronological order. Those which are extant will be edited on the basis of the best version which has remained. Those ›Erbauungsreden‹ which are not extant will be documented and described according to an index Bolzano himself has prepared. Bolzano held more edification speeches in the academic year 1809/1810 that in any other year in which he was teaching. During this time he held 52 of these speeches. Six speeches have been preserved as autographs, there are only notes for four of the speeches, and only the dates are known for two of the speeches. Most of the others are still in existence as transcripts reproduced in facsimile. In the edification speeches held in the academic year 1809/1810, Bolzano’s concept of education, which includes the entire personality, is shown especially clearly. There are twice as many speeches which have a generally advisory content than there are speeches which deal mainly with religious issues.

In addition, the volume also corrects errors in this edition which alter the meaning in numerous places.

The private correspondence during these years focused on Reuchlin’s conflicts with the Faculty of Theology in Cologne regarding his expert assessment of Jewish literature which he had defended in his pamphlet ›Augenspiegel‹ in 1511 against the hostilities of Johannes Pfefferkorn’s. Reuchlin’s official correspondence on the other hand dealt with various protracted court cases; this is presented in the appendices, in context, each case supplemented by overviews of the oral proceedings. Melanchthon and other theologians were important advisors in the preparations for the religious discussion announced by the emperor; among other things, they wrote expert reports as a basis for a common position on the Protestant side.
