The book of Jezirah, a Hebrew treatise from late antiquity, gives an account of the divine creation of the world and of the ensuing course of events. It is one of the most important works of Jewish mysticism and philosophy. The treatise was first published in 1552 in a commentated translation by the great philosopher Guillaume Postel. Its publication in a Latin Christian context shows that its reverberations exceeded Jewish circles. The work is one of the basic texts of early modern concepts of creation and science. The editor’s introduction includes annotations to Postel’s comments throughout.

In addition, the volume also corrects errors in this edition which alter the meaning in numerous places.

In the imaginary gallery of philosophical figures, Nietzsche is represented on several occasions. He is there both as a classicist of philosophical thinking and as a lonely, misunderstood outsider, as a systematic thinker and as an aphoristic writer. Nietzsche the founder of a religion stands alongside the abrasive critic of all conventional religion and thought. One is constantly confronted with the question of which, if any, is the authentic figure of Nietzsche´s thinking. The present study does not postulate any new interpretation of Nietzsche´s philosophical deliberations but analyses their various self-statements, the emphasis, however, being on one in particular: At the beginning of Human All-too-Human, Nietzsche rejects »metaphysical« philosophising in favor of a »historical« one. He returns to this repeatedly and affirms it. There is no doubt that this self-statement provides an important key to an understanding of Nietzsche´s philosophy. And in fact any interpretation of the concept of historical philosophy, if pursued sufficiently carefully and sufficiently deeply, will come up with a number of characteristics which are common to those figures called Nietzsche. With Nietzsche, historical philosophy means neither the history of philosophy nor the philosophy of history, unless it be history in the broadest and most comprehensive sense of the term. Nietzsche´s historical philosophy expressly draws on the becoming as its sphere of thought. The focal point is actually the becoming of the inner world, the internalisation and processing of experiences into new instruments for the interpretation of experience. The central idea behind historical philosophy is a historical investigation of the conditions for a human understanding of both the self and the world. These conditions are not interpreted as the forms of a pure, universal and constant structure of human reason but above all as the marks and monuments of those who emerged victorious from earlier conflicts over the issue of interpretation. Nietzsche´s texts are accounts of travels into this inner world – more or less common to us all – of historically shaped models of interpretation. It is no accident that lurking behind the »metaphysical need« they also discover quite different needs; and in the ruins of metaphysical philosophy they discover the sometimes gruesome instruments of torture and sheer endless experimental fields which once enabled man to introduce ultimate truth, meaning and conceptual clarity into his world (and to immortalise this in an imaginary gallery of philosophical figures).

Since its condemnation, above all by German idealism, popular philosophy, which had been one of the most influential movements of the 18th century, had a negative connotation. The discussion about a philosophy which tried to get closer to people‹s lives did however see itself as a part of the widespread debate on self-understanding of Enlightenment as a whole. It was mainly the study of Kant's critical philosophy which forced people to rethink the demands, limitations and possibilties of popular philosophy. In the 16th and 17th century, logic was the philosophical discipline which was pursued most intensively. Nevertheless today our knowledge of the logic of this time is only fragmentary. There are cracks in the interpretation of this vast amount of material, since it is difficult to conceive of all of the problems in logic at that time and to show how logic gradually abandoned Aristotle and scholasticism in search of a new foundation. The second volume deals with the history of logic from the emergence of Cartesianism up to the end of the Enlightenment. The logic of that time was intertwined with epistemological, metaphysical and also psychological problems. Thus it is not formal logic. On the other hand, the idea of a mathematical method was becoming increasingly important in the 17th and 18th centuries.

In October of 1806 Fichte accompanied the Prussian Court on its flight to Königsberg before the invading French army. Most of the first half of this volume consists of the letters exchanged between Fichte, who was lecturing on a new ›Wissenschaftslehre‹ (1807) in Königsberg, and his wife, who remained behind in Berlin. He returned to Berlin by way of Copenhagen, where he wrote letters in support of Johannes von Müller. In his exchange with von Müller in Berlin he composed his ›Deduzierten Plan‹ for the new university to be established in Berlin. An open letter from Josef Kurz makes reference to Jean Paul's ›Clavis Fichtiana‹. The letters also document Fichte's experience with the censor regarding his ›Reden an die Deutsche Nation‹; an experience that led to his efforts to abolish censorship. Following a serious illness, Fichte made a new effort to produce a universally comprehensible version of the ›Wissenschaftslehre‹ and wrote his last major philosophical letter to F. H. Jacobi.

The logical and semantical theories of the Middle Ages originate in the interpretation and explication of the Aristotelian texts. Their development can be seen as a movement towards a purer Aristotelian and empiricist approach to logic, as against the more Platonic and rationalist interpretations of the Logica vetus. The discovery of the complete Aristotelian Organon during Abelard's time, the consistent Aristotelian philosophy of science in Aquinas and Boethius of Dacia as well as the the clear-cut distinction between logical order and reality in the writings of Ockham and his contemporaries are all important steps in this direction. The Aristotelian concept substance, which in spite of its inherent contradictions remained the base of medieval logic, is one of the main reasons why the Middle Ages have never accomplished a consistent semantic theory not a completely formal logical calculus. The growing empiricism, however, did never diminish the interest in the formal relations between logical entities. – Some of the problems discussed in the Middle Ages, e.g. the relations between logic, linguistics, and ontology or those between technical and ordinary language, are still of great interest to the modern debate.

B. von Rohr, B. Sprenger, J. Tobler, G. H. Zincke among others. They document the discovery of the common people in the German Enlightenment. Just under 100 sources, most of which have not been published for more than two centuries, show how an Enlightenment interested in the welfare of society had evolved from the new orientation of a social class of scholars and educated people and how then the idea originated to provide the common man with the new findings on natural science so that these could be put into practice. The early debates about the goals and the means of enlightening the common man are fascinating, since it was in these that for the first time ideas were expressed stating that in addition to economic enlightenment it would be necessary to create an entire educational movement which was aimed at changing the mentality of the farmers. This also meant a change in the literary instruments of the Enlightenment of the common people.
