This volume presents all of Schelling’s publications from the year 1801. These include his essays from volume two of the ›Journal of Speculative Physics‹ as well as shorter texts such as reviews and poems and finally the notification in the Critical Journal of Philosophy. The most significant essay in this volume is the ›Darstellung meines Systems der Philosophie‹ (Presentation of My System of Philosophy), which opened a new chapter in the history of Schelling’s thinking. In it, his philosophy emerged explicity as a ›system of identity‹. The text is – in Schelling’s own words – the only »strictly scientific« presentation of this new system.

In his lectures held first in Jena in 1802/3 and then repeated in Würzburg in 1804 and 1805, Schelling developed his new philosophy of art, which was radical when compared to all previous aesthetics, subsequent to the ›System‹ of 1800 and the lectures ›On the Method of Academic Study‹. Schelling dismissed the effect aesthetics and the imitation aesthetics which had been common right up to Kant in favor of an aesthetics of medium and genre. This was based on the insight that »art represents a world which is as self-contained and complete as nature is«. In the philosophy of art, Schelling implemented the approach of identity philosophy paradigmatically from the perspective of system and content. This edition will make the text accessible in a new editorial form as a catalogue (available on a CD-ROM) of references to music, the visual arts, architecture and literature. The edition is based on the texts from the literary estate in the ›Sämmtlichen Werken‹ and will include the previously unknown unpublished transcripts from Jena and Würzburg.

In his work ›Bruno oder über das göttliche und natürliche Princip der Dinge‹ (Bruno, or On the Natural and Divine Principle of Things), published in the summer of 1802, Schelling describes the main features of his identity philosophy based on the model of a Platonic dialogue. All the essays that Schelling published in the first volume of the ›Critical Journal of Philosophy‹ originated in 1802. These included ›Ueber das absolute Identitäts-System‹ (On the Absolute Identity System), a critical dispute with Reinhold, as well as ›Rückert and Weiss, oder die Philosophie zu der es keines Denkens und Wissens bedarf‹ (Rückert and Weiss, or the Philosophy Which Requires no Thinking or Knowledge). In the text structure, the edition has taken all other editions into consideration and makes these accessible in editorial reports and explanatory annotations.

The letters deal with the philosophy and theology taught in Tübingen. Evidence of this background is provided in an abundance of explanatory annotations, as is the evidence of Spinozas influence. It is due to this historical-critical edition that Schellings position can be understood precisely for the first time. Five different versions were used for the text structure of the ›Philosophische Briefe‹ (Philosophical Letters). In the ›Deduction des Naturrechts‹ (Deduction of Natural Law), Schelling only mentions a single name, contrary to his previous practice. It is established in the editorial report that he was familiar with the names of the important teachers of natural law of his time. The volume concludes with the first complete reprint of the ›Anti-Critique‹ in a collected edition – including the critique which instigated it.

The ›Allgemeine Übersicht‹ (›Abhandlungen zur Erläuterung des Idealismus der Wissenschaftslehre‹); (Treatises on the Explanation of the Idealism of the Theory of Science) 2nd edition 1809, was published anonymously between November 1796 and July 1798 in the ›Philosophical Journal‹ edited by Niethammer and Fichte . Schelling intervened in the dispute surrounding Kantian philosophy in order to take a stand against the conservative Kantians and against Reinhold and to indicate his own position. The edition incorporates five different versions of the first printing and gives a bibliographical analysis of the literature which Schelling quoted or to which he alluded. Schelling’s scathing criticism of Schlossers anti-Kantian missives, which had caused a stir (Schiller: »miserable emptiness and platitude«, is also in the context of the Kant debate. The editorial report deals with this controversy. In his review entitled ›Ueber Offenbarung und Volksunterricht‹ (On Revelation and National Education) of Niethammer›s dissertation ›De Revelatione‹; Schelling enlarges upon Niethammer‹s criticism of the concept of revelation, which excludes this concept from the use of reason and restricts it to an educational usefulness. The subsequent atheism dispute was forthcoming.

The edition by Wilhelm Bolin and Friedrich Jodl was published by our company for the first time between 1903 and 1911 in 10 volumes. Among the works written in his youth, this is the first publication of two of them, both of which are indispensable for gaining insight into Feuerbach‹s (1804-1872) philosophical development: his dissertation from 1828 and the ›Gedanken über Tod und Unsterblichkeit‹ (Thoughts on Death and Immortality) published anonymously in 1830, a work which denied Feuerbach a university career for all of his life. The youthful works contain a chronological table as well as a bibliography of the works by and about Feuerbach. This reprint contains previously unpublished Feuerbach letters which have been added to the edition of the letters from and by Feuerbach, edited by W. Bolin and published in 1904. Among the letters which have been added there are 18 addressed to Arnold Ruge, and these provide some insight into the Left or Young Hegelians who were in the process of formation.

This last volume of regesta, which goes up to Melanchthon’s death, begins with an attempt to settle the Flacians’ dispute with Melanchthon and the Wittenbergians. The purpose of this was to enable a common approach by the Protestants at the second Colloquy of Worms in 1557. This was a failure on both counts. The documents and letters pertaining to this are the largest set of issues dealt with in these last years. Apart from this, the controversy concerning the Lord‘s Supper had broken out once again. Melanchthon advised his friend Hardenberg in Bremen, and he wrote his report for Frederick III, Elector Palatinate, which ultimately led him to Calvinism. The Counter Reformation visitation or inquisition in Bavaria inspired Melanchthon to a final reckoning with the Roman Catholic church, and for him this had the significance of a last will.

Together with Camerarius, Melanchthon had to inspect the Fürstenschulen and to examine the scholarship holders and also to interrogate recalcitrant predicants, since the dispute concerning the adiaphora was still not over. The controversy with Osiander concerning the correct doctrine of justification had to be assessed for Prussia, Pomerania and the imperial city of Nuremberg. Electoral Brandenburg demanded information on Christological problems, which resulted in Melanchthon’s finest theological treatise, created during many months of work. The scholars of Augsburg wanted clarification of Schwenckfeld’s theories, which for Melanchthon was a tedious and unresolved task. With the advent of Peter Canisius, he became aware of the first Jesuits. His friendly correspondence with the Danish king remained untroubled. His close relationship to the neighboring princes of Anhalt suffered greatly due to Georg of Anhalt’s premature death.

The lectures which Bernard Bolzano held from 1805 up to his dismissal in January of 1820 as a professor for Catholic religious education at the University of Prague in the context of the philosophical studies were published anonymously in 1834 in a four-volume edition with which Bolzano was very unhappy. As part of the collected works of Bolzano there is now for the first time a new critical edition of this work which includes the corrections and variants of a master copy authorized by Bolzano. The textbook is divided into three parts: In the first part Bolzano explains the concept of religion and other terms which are essential for his philosophy of religion and presents the most important theories of natural religion and rational religion, divided into “natural dogmatics” and “natural morality.” In the second part, Bolzano studies the miracles which serve as a confirmation of Catholic Christianity. In the third part, he describes the individual individual articles of faith of “Old Catholic dogmatics” and those of “Old Catholic morality.”
