Reuchlin‹s ‹Kunst der Kabbala‹ (On the Art of the Kabbalah) was published in 1517 in Hagenau by Anshelm and is dedicated to Pope Leo X. In this work, Reuchlin summed up his research and his thoughts on the Jewish secret doctrine of the Kabbalah. This work is a continuation of his previous thoughts from ‹De verbo mirifico‹. It is set up as a dialogue, divided into three books, of which the first and the third deal with issues surrounding the Kabbalah whereas the second book deals with Pythagorean thought. In its time, this work was admired more – or also rejected more – than it was properly understood by scholars. Nevertheless it could contain an important key to Reuchlin‹s thinking and his view of the world. This work, which is not easy to understand, will be published in the original Latin in a text-critical, edited version and with a transation into Modern High German which will be followed by a comprehensive interdisciplinary commentary.

This 1572 edition of the ›Dialecticae libri duo‹ is the last and most influentical of Petrus Ramus (Peter Ramus) works. In the tradition of Agricola, it provides an introduction to the Ciceronian topos and reflects on the extent to which systematic instructions for reaching a judgment are possible. Drawing on the literary classics (Virgil, Ovid und Cicero), it is a stylistic sign of the dissociation from the Scholastic tradition. Although Ramus does deal with formal elements of Aristotelian logic, he does so with a special method which allowed Ramism to become the the counter-concept to Aristotelian Scholastic philosophy in the 16th and 17th century. This edition makes this pivotal text of Ramism available once again, along with a new translation and introduction.

Between April 1784 and June 1788, the draft for a ‹General Code of Law for the Prussian State‹ was published in Berlin. The advance notice it was given called upon the public to give their evaluation of this and encouraged the scholars of legal philosophy in Germany and other countries to engage in a thorough criticism, for which substantial prizes were offered. Included in the new edition in 6 volumes is an account of the development and further revision of the draft. There is a list of critical suggestions (monita), made by the courts, the administrative authorities, the three estates, and private individuals. In each of the sections and articles, reference is made to the monita, a subsequent extract of these and Svarez' evaluation (revisio) as well as the the ‹General Code of Law‹ and the ‹Prussian Civil Code‹.

The correspondence of 1785 was influenced mainly by Jacobi’s publication of the »Spinozabriefe« (Spinoza Letters). During this year he corresponded primarily with Johann Georg Hamann, as well as the young theologian Thomas Wizenmann, Princess Gallitzin, Goethe, Herder, Gleim, Forster, Lavater, Kleuker and Soemmerring. More than one quarter of the letters of 1875 had not been published up to now; this includes just under 90 letters. The volume contains an appendix which includes 138 previously unknown letters written between 1764 and 1784 (either handed down or made available), among which is the previously unpublished correspondence with F. K. v. Hompesch (temporarily responsible for finances as a minister of Karl Theodor’s); which document Jacobi’s political activities in Munich, among other things. The volume concludes with a detailed index of persons.

The return of the classical philosophers«: with this formula Eugenio Garin described a special feature of our Modern Age. He pointed out, however, that this was not only about philologically restoring classical sources but about a fundamental reshaping of an intellectual possession that was again made available. Among all the traditions of classical antiquity, it certainly was the Epicurean tradition which had the most radical character compared to the widely known traditions of Platonism and Aristotelianism. None the less, there is no complete or satisfying picture of the great philosophical and cultural phenomenon of modern Epicureanism today. It is also peculiar that the historians‹ attention has been extremely selective in this case: among the three great partitions (logic, physics and ethics), physics has largely dominated the scene. The fields of law and politics and their connection to anthropology (especially regarding the concepts of the historic development of mankind and of religion) have much less been taken into account. The essays in this book deal with different aspects of the question whether Epicureanism has played an important role for the foundation of the legal, political and moral culture of the Modern Age. They make clear that the influence of Epicureanism has been much more penetrating than one could have assumed. They also show that Epicureanism directly concerned politics, moral, law and practical experience in general, in which it produced new elaborations that were relevant to the Modern Age.

In this work, Schelling presented the first system of German idealism. It summarizes the reflection of his early philosophizing and leads into the system of identity. Containing individual chapters on history and art, it introduced subjects which attained great significance in the contemporary discussion and in Schelling’s subsequent philosophy. Schelling’s ›System des transscendentalen Idealismus‹ (System of Transcendental Idealism) was first published in 1800 and then in 1816 in a previously almost unknown Swedish edition. These two editions as well as the publication in the ›Sämmtlichen Werken‹ have been incorporated into the text structure. The known copies of the first printing have been collated. Entries made by Schelling in his own personal copy, which have been handed down in the ›Sämmtlichen Werke‹; are given separately. The letters deal with the philosophy and theology taught in Tübingen. Evidence of this background is provided in an abundance of explanatory annotations, as is the evidence of Spinozas influence. It is due to this historical-critical edition that Schellings position can be understood precisely for the first time. Five different versions were used for the text structure of the ›Philosophische Briefe‹ (Philosophical Letters).
