This 1572 edition of the ›Dialecticae libri duo‹ is the last and most influentical of Petrus Ramus (Peter Ramus) works. In the tradition of Agricola, it provides an introduction to the Ciceronian topos and reflects on the extent to which systematic instructions for reaching a judgment are possible. Drawing on the literary classics (Virgil, Ovid und Cicero), it is a stylistic sign of the dissociation from the Scholastic tradition. Although Ramus does deal with formal elements of Aristotelian logic, he does so with a special method which allowed Ramism to become the the counter-concept to Aristotelian Scholastic philosophy in the 16th and 17th century. This edition makes this pivotal text of Ramism available once again, along with a new translation and introduction.

Reuchlin‹s ‹Kunst der Kabbala‹ (On the Art of the Kabbalah) was published in 1517 in Hagenau by Anshelm and is dedicated to Pope Leo X. In this work, Reuchlin summed up his research and his thoughts on the Jewish secret doctrine of the Kabbalah. This work is a continuation of his previous thoughts from ‹De verbo mirifico‹. It is set up as a dialogue, divided into three books, of which the first and the third deal with issues surrounding the Kabbalah whereas the second book deals with Pythagorean thought. In its time, this work was admired more – or also rejected more – than it was properly understood by scholars. Nevertheless it could contain an important key to Reuchlin‹s thinking and his view of the world. This work, which is not easy to understand, will be published in the original Latin in a text-critical, edited version and with a transation into Modern High German which will be followed by a comprehensive interdisciplinary commentary.

Post-Kantian idealism is expressed principally also as a study of the history of philosophy, particularly in the works of Schelling and Hegel. This also is due to Kant. The critical turn opened up a fundamentally new approach to tradition and its foundation in antiquity, above all to Plato and Neoplatonism, to the Platonic tradition among the Church Fathers, Augustine in particular, and to the Renaissance. His departure from East Prussia signaled a new era in Fichte's scientific life. In his ›Spekulation zu Kopenhagen‹ he located as a »task« those points on which he wished to clarify and deepen his ›Wissenschaftslehre‹ even further. The draft of a ›Beantwortung des Jacobischen Schreibens von 99‹ served as the prospectus for »establishing a philosophical journal«, a project that soon had to be abandoned because of difficulties arranging for a publisher. Upon his return to Berlin, Fichte was commissioned by Minister Beyme to prepare for the Prussian government a ›Plan einer zu Berlin zu errichtenden höhern Lehranstalt‹. In this plan Fichte proposed that the Prussian University be modeled upon a college system. But Fichte's plan was rejected in favor of Wilhelm von Humboldt's ideas. Fichte's unpublished papers contain scarcely any references to his ›Reden an die Deutsche Nation‹ (December 1807 – March 1809). Following these lectures, Fichte was engaged in a general revision of his ›Wissenschaftslehre‹. These drafts show which problems Fichte thought still needed to be addressed, and they also demonstrate that his reflections on the philosophy of history during the years from 1806 to 1809 were also highly relevant to his conception of the Wissenschaftslehre. Fichte began his lectures at the then still unofficial University of Berlin with an ›Anleitung zur Kunst des Philosophierens‹; followed, in February and March of 1810, with lectures on the ›Wissenschaftslehre‹.

The editorial report provides insight into the history of its origins, and the annotations provide information on the theological literature which Schelling used. The logical and semantical theories of the Middle Ages originate in the interpretation and explication of the Aristotelian texts. Their development can be seen as a movement towards a purer Aristotelian and empiricist approach to logic, as against the more Platonic and rationalist interpretations of the Logica vetus. The discovery of the complete Aristotelian Organon during Abelard's time, the consistent Aristotelian philosophy of science in Aquinas and Boethius of Dacia as well as the the clear-cut distinction between logical order and reality in the writings of Ockham and his contemporaries are all important steps in this direction. The Aristotelian concept substance, which in spite of its inherent contradictions remained the base of medieval logic, is one of the main reasons why the Middle Ages have never accomplished a consistent semantic theory not a completely formal logical calculus. The growing empiricism, however, did never diminish the interest in the formal relations between logical entities. – Some of the problems discussed in the Middle Ages, e.g. the relations between logic, linguistics, and ontology or those between technical and ordinary language, are still of great interest to the modern debate.

Unfortunately the manuscript of the ›Wiener Logik‹ (Vienna Logic) was not discovered until all the plans for the Academy edition of Kant‹s collected works had almost been completed. The index volume attempts to show the significance of these little known lecture notes. Here as well, a lemmatized main index provides the entire language used in the lectures, a concordance facilitates the determination of places in the notes related to a certain subject, especially for those terms which are used often. About 20 pages of annotations establish the references to the ‹Kritik der reinen Vernunft‹; (Critique of Pure Reason), the reflections in the literary remains as well as the other transcripts and supplement the bibliographies of the Academy edition. In addition, the volume also corrects errors in this edition which alter the meaning in numerous places.
