This thesis is a systematic reconstruction of Hobbes’ work. It focuses on the relation between his mechanistic ontology and the manifestation of modern subjectivity in his philosophy. Hobbes wants to elaborate a self-conception of man within the new mechanistic paradigm which enables physics to be a successful science of the world. That is why he admits feelings, perceptions, thoughts and intentions as phenomena of self-experience and applies the mechanistic paradigm to them. Paradoxically enough, this very application is shown to make man emerge as a subject in contrast to nature as an object in Hobbes’ work. Although the theory of this subjectivity cannot be deduced from the materialistic ontology, the way Hobbes considers this subjectivity depends on this ontology. Nevertheless, Hobbes fails to establish this subjectivity within the mechanistic order of the world. Hence reflecting on Hobbes’ theory as a product of this subjectivity results in scepticism: Each person has his or her own private reason. No proposition can claim an objective validity. This book reveals these sceptical consequences in Hobbes’ theory of knowledge. His theory of unrestricted sovereignty is shown to be the political consequence of this epistemological scepticism. In contrast to common belief, the results of the book culminate in the thesis that it is Hobbes (not Descartes) to have worked out an entirely modern philosophy for the first time: He considers reason and subjectivity to be eo ipso active. This feature of his theory is a landmark to modern philosophy. This book shows that the seperation between subject and object, mind and nature cannot be traced back to the admission of classical metaphysical conceptions in modern philosophy of mind: In Hobbes’ philosophy, the mechanistic paradigm immanently gives rise to this separation – just because Hobbes wants to develop a self-conception for man within this paradigm.

For those books whose title does not indicate clearly that they deal with rhetoric a short commentary has been added which calls attention to the part of the work dealing with rhetoric. A comprehensive index of subjects classifies the bibliography according to fields of research and scholarly disciplines as well as to the genres dealt with, the themes, motifs, topoi and arguments. A chronological table shows the historical progress of research on rhetoric in the FRG from 1945 on.

Along with his ›Neuen Organon‹; Lambert‘s ›Anlage zur Architectonic‹ (Architectonics) was one of the most influential philosophical works of the 18th century. The second and third part of this work in particular continue to deal with the problems of Wolff’s ontology – which Wolff and Baumgarten had already called ›architectonics‹ – while at the same putting them in a larger context. Kant in particular was influenced considerably by this. The objective of these indices, which were compiled using EDP methods, is to contribute to a better understanding of Lambert’s philosophy and to make and to enable a precise examination of its influence. To begin with, they contain the entire linguistic heritage, each part of which is in a main index, and list all the places each word is mentioned with the number of the page and the line. In view of the fact that there are not many reliable reference works for the 18th century, these indices are of interest not only to philosophers but also to literary scholars and philologists, since they document the language of that era unerringly and provide information on dates which can help with questions of historical language analysis. In addition, the volumes also contain several special indices which will serve special research interests. These include an index of persons as well as an index of the linguistic heritage in Latin, which is an important addition in view of the lack of lexica which are relevant to the Latin of the 18th century.

Valentin Weigel's theology of mystical speculation represented the culmination of German mysticism in the 16th century. Traditional schools of thinking of various origins are united in Weigel's works. His Protestant-spiritualist piety, which was influenced by Sebastian Franck, drew upon medieval mysticism, primarily upon Eckart, Tauler and the ›Theologia Deutsch‹. His thinking incorporated Boethius' neoplatonist ideas and Paracelsus' ideas on natural philosophy, and he developed them into Christological-cosmosophical speculations. The continuing influence of his thinking, which often emerges unexpectedly, such as for example in the works of Johannes Arndt und Kepler, has presented researchers with many unsolved problems, in particular regarding Böhme's relationship to Weigel and to Weigelianism. They will be able to be solved on the basis of this Weigel edition, which also includes the writings attributed to him. This first complete critical edition of Valentin Weigel's works is based on seminal research done by Winfried Zeller. His study of the handwritten works which have been preserved made it possible to resolve the previously contentious issues regarding the question of authenticity, to determine which writings were definitely done by Weigel, as well as their chronology, and led to the discovery of previously unknown manuscripts.

This study attempts to describe J. G. Fichtes original reception of Kant which resulted from pre-Kantian philosophy, in particular from the examination of the dilemma of determinism, and its significance for the creation of the ‹Wissenschaftslehre‹ (Doctrine of Science). It was mainly Fichte‹s preoccupation with the ‹System der Notwendigkeit‹ (System of Necessity), developed by Karl Ferdinand Hommel (1722– 1781), a criminal law theoretician from Leipzig motivated by natural law, which played a key role this. This was due to the fact that Hommel‹s determinism, in particular its basic assumption resulting from the theory of capability, namely the interpretation of reason as a mere epiphenomenon of natural causality and the assertion of a constitutive primacy of the mind over the will, can be interpreted as a counter-matrix to Fichte‹s ‹System der Freiheit‹ (System of Freedom), in which the basic prerequisites of a theory of capability are reversed. Fichte‹s endeavors to systematically reconstruct the unity of reason in Kantian transcendental philosophy becomes clearer against this backdrop.

The student transcripts of this volume considerably facilitate our understanding of Fichte’s difficult and terse preparatory texts. This not only holds for the revised lectures of the later works on the ›Rechtslehre‹ and ›Sittenlehre‹ of 1812, but also for ›The Facts of Consciousness‹ and the ›Wissenschaftslehre‹ (both from early 1813), the ›Introduction to the Wissenschaftslehre‹ (Fall, 1813) and the 1814 ›Wissenschaftslehre‹. The lecture transcript entitled ›Darstellung des Christenthums‹ documents a portion of the lectures on the ›Staatslehre‹. Because of its various hypothetical approaches to the elements that constitute consciousness, ›The Facts of Consciousness‹ merely serves as an introduction to the ›Wissenschaftslehre‹. Whereas it is the task of the ›Wissenschaftslehre‹ itself to supply a complete deduction of the cognitive presuppositions of these elements within a systematic framework. War forced the suspension of these lectures, and in winter 1813/14 Fichte renewed his attempt. Of these there is extant a hitherto unpublished transcript of a comprehensive ›Introduction‹; followed by five lectures from the 1814 ›Wissenschaftslehre‹. The latter was cut short by Fichte’s death.

The edition by Wilhelm Bolin and Friedrich Jodl was published by our company for the first time between 1903 and 1911 in 10 volumes. Among the works written in his youth, this is the first publication of two of them, both of which are indispensable for gaining insight into Feuerbach‹s (1804-1872) philosophical development: his dissertation from 1828 and the ›Gedanken über Tod und Unsterblichkeit‹ (Thoughts on Death and Immortality) published anonymously in 1830, a work which denied Feuerbach a university career for all of his life. The youthful works contain a chronological table as well as a bibliography of the works by and about Feuerbach. This reprint contains previously unpublished Feuerbach letters which have been added to the edition of the letters from and by Feuerbach, edited by W. Bolin and published in 1904. Among the letters which have been added there are 18 addressed to Arnold Ruge, and these provide some insight into the Left or Young Hegelians who were in the process of formation.

Edelmann (1698–1767) was a forerunner of the German Enlightenment. He stood up quite openly for the English deists and their religion of reason, which he associated with the idea of logos and the commandment of love. He was the first to invoke Spinoza and his radical criticism of the Bible. Edelmann was vigorously opposed to every kind of orthodoxy and ultimately denied the historical Christian faith. His polemic pamphlets are examples of classic polemics. In the course of the Edelmann'schen Streites (Edelmann dispute), his books were burned by the hangman. It was because of the Brethren church and his work on the Berleburg Bible translation that Edelmann became more open in relation to the scriptures and eventually had a purely human image of Christ. This edition of his works contains facsimile reprints of the original editions of all the writings Edelmann published himself as well as a reprint of his autobiography and previously unpublished works from his literary estate. Walter Grossmann has provided an introduction for each work.
