This volume traces the external and internal history of the Academy Plato‹s school, up to the time of Cicero (and up until its official closing in 529 AD) and focuses on the question of how much was known of the teachings of Plato and his followers in the 1st century BC, i.e. what were the foundations of knowledge which formed the basis of Platonism as it emerged during the early imperial period. Dörrie comes to the conclusion that "the tradition established by Plato had suffered several breaks.» As a consequence, Platonism of the imperial period did not have its origins in the Academy but instead had to be newly established outside it.

This is the first monograph about the young Leibniz’s basic philosophical position since Willy Kabitz’s work seventy years ago. In the 18th century there was a surprisingly large amount of interest in the thinker, author and human being David Hume (1711–1776); and this interest reflected the entire range of requirements and goals of the German Enlightenment. To begin with, the focus was on Hume‹s theories of the philosophy of religion, theories which were rejected without exception and often only polemically repudiated. Just when there was a chance of having an objective assessment of Hume‹s work, Kant revolutionized philosophy, and Hume was seen merely as the factor which triggered Kant‹s metaphysics. The controversial question of when and in which of his works Hume interrupted Kant's dogmatic slumber is brought to a head, and thus at the same time a new theory pertaining to Kant's philosophical development is presented.

Between April 1784 and June 1788, the draft for a ‹General Code of Law for the Prussian State‹ was published in Berlin. The advance notice it was given called upon the public to give their evaluation of this and encouraged the scholars of legal philosophy in Germany and other countries to engage in a thorough criticism, for which substantial prizes were offered. Included in the new edition in 6 volumes is an account of the development and further revision of the draft. There is a list of critical suggestions (monita), made by the courts, the administrative authorities, the three estates, and private individuals. In each of the sections and articles, reference is made to the monita, a subsequent extract of these and Svarez' evaluation (revisio) as well as the the ‹General Code of Law‹ and the ‹Prussian Civil Code‹.

The edition by Wilhelm Bolin and Friedrich Jodl was published by our company for the first time between 1903 and 1911 in 10 volumes. Among the works written in his youth, this is the first publication of two of them, both of which are indispensable for gaining insight into Feuerbach‹s (1804-1872) philosophical development: his dissertation from 1828 and the ›Gedanken über Tod und Unsterblichkeit‹ (Thoughts on Death and Immortality) published anonymously in 1830, a work which denied Feuerbach a university career for all of his life. The youthful works contain a chronological table as well as a bibliography of the works by and about Feuerbach. This reprint contains previously unpublished Feuerbach letters which have been added to the edition of the letters from and by Feuerbach, edited by W. Bolin and published in 1904. Among the letters which have been added there are 18 addressed to Arnold Ruge, and these provide some insight into the Left or Young Hegelians who were in the process of formation.

Richard Koch (1882–1949) was one of the most important medical theoreticians and historians of the 20th century. He was in addition a co-founder of the Free Jewish School in Frankfurt am Main, which was established by Franz Rosenzweig. Koch‹s unfinished memoirs, published here for the first time, were written in Soviet emigration. Although they basically end in 1911, many of them are however written from the perspective of the experience of National Socialism. Remarks on Judaism and Germany‹s social position show Koch to be an acute observer of the events at that time. The particular significance of his memoirs lies in the description of medicine in a phase of reorientation. Koch studied and worked with some of the most influential and inventive clinicians of his time: Ernst [Schweninger{Schweninger, E.}, Ludolf von [Krehl and August Bier. The autobiographical notes document the study of these experiences against the backdrop of reflections on philosophy and medical theory and describe Koch‹s path to his theory of medicine.

The first volume of the Kant Index of the University of Trier is devoted to the ›Auszug aus der Vernunftlehre‹ (Excerpt from the Doctrine of Reason) by the Wolffian G. F. Meier. Kant used it as a compendium for more than 40 years and as a basis for his own lectures on logic. In his notes, he refers to it constantly. This is why the Academy edition reprinted the ›Auszug‹ along with the literary remains of the logic in Volume XVI. In contrast to Baumgarten's ›Metaphysica‹ however there is not even a normal index in this edition which could facilitate work for the reader, a lack which is particularly noticeable. In his ›Auszug‹; Meier made a point of summarizing the Latin school terminology of logic in the 18th century once again. Numerous terms from the ›Kritik der reinen Vernunft‹ (Critique of Pure Reason), such as amphiboly, antithesis, analytic, dialectics, doctrine, dogmatic etc have their source material here. Meier‹s handbook is one of the most important sources for Kants own terminology. For anyone studying Kant, and also for the study of Wolffianism and the German Enlightenment as a whole, this index volume is an indispensable tool.

The principles of the edition for series III are at the beginning of the first volume. Since their transition from theology to modern science in the 17th century, basic terms such as identity, person, subject, ego have been associated with considerable difficulties. This work documents the complications using the identity theory approaches of the pre-Kantian era as an example, which although failing theoretically in their monologic-monadic orientation were however able to affirm that the concept of identity was indispensable in practical terms. In addition it proves that there was already a concept of empirical psychology in the works of Leibniz and that interpretations of the key term apperception will not be able to avoid this in the future. The study concludes with an introduction to Tetens, who can justifiably be seen as the one who did the groundwork for and also was a contributor to the Copernican Revolution.
