The edition by Wilhelm Bolin and Friedrich Jodl was published by our company for the first time between 1903 and 1911 in 10 volumes. Among the works written in his youth, this is the first publication of two of them, both of which are indispensable for gaining insight into Feuerbach‹s (1804-1872) philosophical development: his dissertation from 1828 and the ›Gedanken über Tod und Unsterblichkeit‹ (Thoughts on Death and Immortality) published anonymously in 1830, a work which denied Feuerbach a university career for all of his life. The youthful works contain a chronological table as well as a bibliography of the works by and about Feuerbach. This reprint contains previously unpublished Feuerbach letters which have been added to the edition of the letters from and by Feuerbach, edited by W. Bolin and published in 1904. Among the letters which have been added there are 18 addressed to Arnold Ruge, and these provide some insight into the Left or Young Hegelians who were in the process of formation.

The philosophical method in the 17th and early 18th centuries was governed by the example of the mathematical method. This work shows that there were however varying types of methods concerned. From the 15th to the beginning of the 18th century, texts of various origins show an intensive reception of the Church Fathers. The reappropriation of the patristic tradition developed mainly due to two historical and systematic factors: on the one hand under the conditions of the Reformation theology of the emerging denominations, as a result of which the »consensus patrum« guaranteed the authenticity of the »true church.» On the other hand, this reception of the Church Fathers became significant due to the tradition of the »philosophie perennis,» a tradition in the history of philosophy and theology which had begun in the 16th century. From antiquity to contemporary scholarship, the »consensus patrum« along with the »translatio sapientiae« were the prerequisites for this tradition.

The dialogue ‹De veritate‹ is actually the first monograph with this title. Anselm‹s designation of truth as »rectitude which can only be determined by reason» makes it possible to perceive the unity of the logical, the ontological and the ethical, the source on which this thinking draws.

Reuchlin’s official correspondence on the other hand dealt with various protracted court cases; this is presented in the appendices, in context, each case supplemented by overviews of the oral proceedings. This also includes a chronological list of all the letters which illustrates the sequence and the juxtaposition of the humanistic correspondence and the official correspondence.

The lectures which Bernard Bolzano held from 1805 up to his dismissal in January of 1820 as a professor for Catholic religious education at the University of Prague in the context of the philosophical studies were published anonymously in 1834 in a four-volume edition with which Bolzano was very unhappy. As part of the collected works of Bolzano there is now for the first time a new critical edition of this work which includes the corrections and variants of a master copy authorized by Bolzano. The textbook is divided into three parts: In the first part Bolzano explains the concept of religion and other terms which are essential for his philosophy of religion and presents the most important theories of natural religion and rational religion, divided into “natural dogmatics” and “natural morality.” In the second part, Bolzano studies the miracles which serve as a confirmation of Catholic Christianity. In the third part, he describes the individual individual articles of faith of “Old Catholic dogmatics” and those of “Old Catholic morality.”
