Just under 100 sources, most of which have not been published for more than two centuries, show how an Enlightenment interested in the welfare of society had evolved from the new orientation of a social class of scholars and educated people and how then the idea originated to provide the common man with the new findings on natural science so that these could be put into practice. The early debates about the goals and the means of enlightening the common man are fascinating, since it was in these that for the first time ideas were expressed stating that in addition to economic enlightenment it would be necessary to create an entire educational movement which was aimed at changing the mentality of the farmers. This also meant a change in the literary instruments of the Enlightenment of the common people.

The youthful works contain a chronological table as well as a bibliography of the works by and about Feuerbach. This reprint contains previously unpublished Feuerbach letters which have been added to the edition of the letters from and by Feuerbach, edited by W. Bolin and published in 1904. Among the letters which have been added there are 18 addressed to Arnold Ruge, and these provide some insight into the Left or Young Hegelians who were in the process of formation.

‹Priscianus‹ und ‹Iulius‹ are Frischlin‹s two most well-known dramas. This is the first publication in a modern German translation. The appendixes contain the dedications, the prefaces and the afterwords from all of the editions published during Frischlin‹s lifetime, also with a German translation. In his work »Priscianus» (first published in Strasbourg in 1580) Frischlin went back to the early years of humanism. In the course of the play Priscianus, the old Latin grammarian,the embodiment of classical Latinity, meets members of all four faculties who almost torture him to death with their technical jargon. In the end, Erasmus and Melanchthon appear as representatives of humanism and cure the mistreated old man of his sufferings by using drastic measures. Praise of the standard which had been reached in imitating ancient Latinity is also a main subject in ‹Iulius‹ (first published in Strasbourg in 1580). Caesar and Cicero, risen from the underworld, admire the splendor of the large German cities, the art of war made possible by the German invention of gunpowder and the high level of literary education as well as the art of printing, also invented in Germany and useful as a magnificent medium for propagating these.

Meiers big ›Vernunftlehre‹ (Doctrine of Reason) is not a random source used by Kant in addition to numerous others. In fact it appears that Kant used Meier‹s big work as a compendium for his lectures to begin with and then switched over to Meier's ›Auszug aus der Vernunftlehre‹ (Excerpts from the Doctrine of Reason) after a few semesters. When he switched, he wrote down numerous excerpts from the big ›Doctrine of Reason‹ in his personal interleaved copy of this compendium, as Erich Adickes demonstrated. In her study of ›Kants Logikvorlesungen als neuen Schlüssel zur Architektonik der Kritik der reinen Vernunft‹ (FMDA I,9) (Kant's Lectures on Logic as a New Key to the Architectonics of the Critique of Pure Reason), Elfriede Conrad listed these meticulously. Thus this volume is an important supplement to the index volumes previously published concerning his works on logic. It shows precisely how Meier's big ›Doctrine of Reason‹ left a lasting mark on Kant's thinking.

›Der frühe Fichte‹ (The Early Fichte) was not published until 35 years after the scheduled date of publication, since the outbreak of the Second World War was not exactly conducive to inspiring an interest in philosophical reflection. In the following years most of the copies printed were destroyed in fires. The unchanged work deals with the early philosophy of Fichte, who is described as a level-headed philologist, whose main achievement according to the author was dispensing with metaphysical speculations at that time. He did however accuse Fichte of making excessive use of these later on.

Valentin Weigel's theology of mystical speculation represented the culmination of German mysticism in the 16th century. Traditional schools of thinking of various origins are united in Weigel's works. His Protestant-spiritualist piety, which was influenced by Sebastian Franck, drew upon medieval mysticism, primarily upon Eckart, Tauler and the ›Theologia Deutsch‹. His thinking incorporated Boethius' neoplatonist ideas and Paracelsus' ideas on natural philosophy, and he developed them into Christological-cosmosophical speculations. The continuing influence of his thinking, which often emerges unexpectedly, such as for example in the works of Johannes Arndt und Kepler, has presented researchers with many unsolved problems, in particular regarding Böhme's relationship to Weigel and to Weigelianism. They will be able to be solved on the basis of this Weigel edition, which also includes the writings attributed to him. This first complete critical edition of Valentin Weigel's works is based on seminal research done by Winfried Zeller. His study of the handwritten works which have been preserved made it possible to resolve the previously contentious issues regarding the question of authenticity, to determine which writings were definitely done by Weigel, as well as their chronology, and led to the discovery of previously unknown manuscripts.
