Edelmann (1698–1767) was a forerunner of the German Enlightenment. He stood up quite openly for the English deists and their religion of reason, which he associated with the idea of logos and the commandment of love. He was the first to invoke Spinoza and his radical criticism of the Bible. Edelmann was vigorously opposed to every kind of orthodoxy and ultimately denied the historical Christian faith. His polemic pamphlets are examples of classic polemics. In the course of the Edelmann'schen Streites (Edelmann dispute), his books were burned by the hangman. It was because of the Brethren church and his work on the Berleburg Bible translation that Edelmann became more open in relation to the scriptures and eventually had a purely human image of Christ. This edition of his works contains facsimile reprints of the original editions of all the writings Edelmann published himself as well as a reprint of his autobiography and previously unpublished works from his literary estate. Walter Grossmann has provided an introduction for each work.

This study opposes the view held by Paulsen, Adickes, Riehl, Kemp- Smith, Strawson etc. that Kant adopted his division into two parts in the ›Critique of Pure Reason‹ without thinking and for purely systematic reasons from the logic of his time. The analysis of transcripts of Kant‹s lectures on logic and his reflections shows that Kant developed the two major parts of his main work, transcendental doctrine of the elements and transcendental doctrine of method (Chapter 2) and transcendental analytic and dialectic (Chapter 3), in his lectures in an analysis of traditional logic which he did over a period of many decades.

This study attempts to describe J. G. Fichtes original reception of Kant which resulted from pre-Kantian philosophy, in particular from the examination of the dilemma of determinism, and its significance for the creation of the ‹Wissenschaftslehre‹ (Doctrine of Science). It was mainly Fichte‹s preoccupation with the ‹System der Notwendigkeit‹ (System of Necessity), developed by Karl Ferdinand Hommel (1722– 1781), a criminal law theoretician from Leipzig motivated by natural law, which played a key role this. This was due to the fact that Hommel‹s determinism, in particular its basic assumption resulting from the theory of capability, namely the interpretation of reason as a mere epiphenomenon of natural causality and the assertion of a constitutive primacy of the mind over the will, can be interpreted as a counter-matrix to Fichte‹s ‹System der Freiheit‹ (System of Freedom), in which the basic prerequisites of a theory of capability are reversed. Fichte‹s endeavors to systematically reconstruct the unity of reason in Kantian transcendental philosophy becomes clearer against this backdrop.

This critical edition of Bolzano’s main philosophical work incorporates his own corrections, among other things. It originated as Bolzano’s attempt to refute skepticism. In order to do so, he had to analyze the concept of the truth in itself to begin with, and this analysis led him to the concept of the proposition in itself. In this context he developed his theory of the reduction of sentences to a basic form which all have in common. In the imaginary gallery of philosophical figures, Nietzsche is represented on several occasions. He is there both as a classicist of philosophical thinking and as a lonely, misunderstood outsider, as a systematic thinker and as an aphoristic writer. Nietzsche the founder of a religion stands alongside the abrasive critic of all conventional religion and thought. One is constantly confronted with the question of which, if any, is the authentic figure of Nietzsche´s thinking. The present study does not postulate any new interpretation of Nietzsche´s philosophical deliberations but analyses their various self-statements, the emphasis, however, being on one in particular: At the beginning of Human All-too-Human, Nietzsche rejects »metaphysical« philosophising in favor of a »historical« one. He returns to this repeatedly and affirms it. There is no doubt that this self-statement provides an important key to an understanding of Nietzsche´s philosophy. And in fact any interpretation of the concept of historical philosophy, if pursued sufficiently carefully and sufficiently deeply, will come up with a number of characteristics which are common to those figures called Nietzsche. With Nietzsche, historical philosophy means neither the history of philosophy nor the philosophy of history, unless it be history in the broadest and most comprehensive sense of the term. Nietzsche´s historical philosophy expressly draws on the becoming as its sphere of thought. The focal point is actually the becoming of the inner world, the internalisation and processing of experiences into new instruments for the interpretation of experience. The central idea behind historical philosophy is a historical investigation of the conditions for a human understanding of both the self and the world. These conditions are not interpreted as the forms of a pure, universal and constant structure of human reason but above all as the marks and monuments of those who emerged victorious from earlier conflicts over the issue of interpretation. Nietzsche´s texts are accounts of travels into this inner world – more or less common to us all – of historically shaped models of interpretation. It is no accident that lurking behind the »metaphysical need« they also discover quite different needs; and in the ruins of metaphysical philosophy they discover the sometimes gruesome instruments of torture and sheer endless experimental fields which once enabled man to introduce ultimate truth, meaning and conceptual clarity into his world (and to immortalise this in an imaginary gallery of philosophical figures).
