The logical and semantical theories of the Middle Ages originate in the interpretation and explication of the Aristotelian texts. Their development can be seen as a movement towards a purer Aristotelian and empiricist approach to logic, as against the more Platonic and rationalist interpretations of the Logica vetus. The discovery of the complete Aristotelian Organon during Abelard's time, the consistent Aristotelian philosophy of science in Aquinas and Boethius of Dacia as well as the the clear-cut distinction between logical order and reality in the writings of Ockham and his contemporaries are all important steps in this direction. The Aristotelian concept substance, which in spite of its inherent contradictions remained the base of medieval logic, is one of the main reasons why the Middle Ages have never accomplished a consistent semantic theory not a completely formal logical calculus. The growing empiricism, however, did never diminish the interest in the formal relations between logical entities. – Some of the problems discussed in the Middle Ages, e.g. the relations between logic, linguistics, and ontology or those between technical and ordinary language, are still of great interest to the modern debate.

In the 16th and 17th century, logic was the philosophical discipline which was pursued most intensively. Nevertheless today our knowledge of the logic of this time is only fragmentary. There are cracks in the interpretation of this vast amount of material, since it is difficult to conceive of all of the problems in logic at that time and to show how logic gradually abandoned Aristotle and scholasticism in search of a new foundation. The second volume deals with the history of logic from the emergence of Cartesianism up to the end of the Enlightenment. The logic of that time was intertwined with epistemological, metaphysical and also psychological problems. Thus it is not formal logic. On the other hand, the idea of a mathematical method was becoming increasingly important in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Kant's logic lectures are anything but a special course of lectures on the problems of logic. They are more like a first introduction to philosophy in general and in a unique way they reflect the intellectual world of the German Enlightenment. In the third volume of the Kant Index, a transcript of such a logic lecture is broken down lexically for the first time. As a result of this, the language and terminology of Enlightenment philosophy in the 18th century are readily accessible. The Logik Blomberg (Blomberg Logic) goes back to the beginning of the seventies and is thus one of the earliest of the completely extant transcripts. Together with the first two volumes of the Kant Index, this index volume is an important resource for understanding the variety of references in the lecture notes, the compendium which Kant used and the reflections in the literary remains on logic. The repeatedly discussed questions pertaining to the reliability, the origins and the age determination of the transcripts are thus at least somewhat closer to being solved. With the aid of comprehensive lists of typographical errors and errors in transcription, emendations and conjectures, several hundred errors in Volume XXIV of the Academy edition have also been corrected on the basis of the transcript.

The book of Jezirah, a Hebrew treatise from late antiquity, gives an account of the divine creation of the world and of the ensuing course of events. In the 18th century there was a surprisingly large amount of interest in the thinker, author and human being David Hume (1711–1776); and this interest reflected the entire range of requirements and goals of the German Enlightenment. To begin with, the focus was on Hume‹s theories of the philosophy of religion, theories which were rejected without exception and often only polemically repudiated. Just when there was a chance of having an objective assessment of Hume‹s work, Kant revolutionized philosophy, and Hume was seen merely as the factor which triggered Kant‹s metaphysics. The controversial question of when and in which of his works Hume interrupted Kant's dogmatic slumber is brought to a head, and thus at the same time a new theory pertaining to Kant's philosophical development is presented.
