The logical and semantical theories of the Middle Ages originate in the interpretation and explication of the Aristotelian texts. Their development can be seen as a movement towards a purer Aristotelian and empiricist approach to logic, as against the more Platonic and rationalist interpretations of the Logica vetus. The discovery of the complete Aristotelian Organon during Abelard's time, the consistent Aristotelian philosophy of science in Aquinas and Boethius of Dacia as well as the the clear-cut distinction between logical order and reality in the writings of Ockham and his contemporaries are all important steps in this direction. The Aristotelian concept substance, which in spite of its inherent contradictions remained the base of medieval logic, is one of the main reasons why the Middle Ages have never accomplished a consistent semantic theory not a completely formal logical calculus. The growing empiricism, however, did never diminish the interest in the formal relations between logical entities. – Some of the problems discussed in the Middle Ages, e.g. the relations between logic, linguistics, and ontology or those between technical and ordinary language, are still of great interest to the modern debate.

In der Antike (Kap. 1) taucht der Begriff Eklektik nur bei Diogenes Laertios (der massgeblichen Quelle für den Begriff der philosophischen Auswahl-Eklektik), bei Clemens von Alexandria (patristische Eklektik) und in zwei medizinischen Texten auf. Im Blick auf die einschlägigen Argumentationsmuster der Neuzeit sind daneben aber auch mehrere antike Zitate und Gedanken begriffsgeschichtlich wichtig. Aus dem selben Grund muss die Behandlung der neuzeitlichen Autoren mit Petrarca einsetzen und Denker wie Valla (Freiheitsidee) und Vives sowie den Begriff des Synkretismus heranziehen. Das zweite Kapitel stellt aber auch das Auftauchen neuzeitlicher Spuren des Begriffs Eklektik dar, z. B. bei Bembo, Ramus, Lisius, Alsted und in der Philosophiegeschichtsschreibung. In sachlicher Hinsicht (Auswahl) ist besonders der Mediziner Sennert interessant. Die Zeit von 1640 bis 1650 zeigt den Begriff u. a. bei dem Historiker Selden, dem Theologen Taylor und dem Philosophen Heereboord; es handelt sich, so könnte man sagen, um die Zeit der Inkubation (Kap. 3), an die sich die Zeit des Durchbruchs des Begriffs (1650–1675; Kap. 4) anschliesst – eines Durchbruchs vor allem auf den Feldern der Geschichtsschreibung und der Naturwissenschaft. Die Jahre von 1675 bis zur Jahrhundertwende umschliessen die Blütezeit (Kap. 5), womit in erster Linie der überragende Beitrag gemeint ist, den Sturm als Naturwissenschaftler für den Begriff Eklektik leistete. In dieser Zeit schickte sich aber bereits die im Entstehen begriffene Idee des Selbstdenkens an, die Eklektik sowohl zu beerben als auch zu verändern (Thomasius; Budde und die ›Sache selbst‹). Das achtzehnte Jahrhundert zeigt daher den Abstieg des Begriffs in Form seiner Ausbreitung, Entleerung (Eklektik ohne Auswahl) und Auflösung (Kap. 6). Diese Entwicklung setzte also bereits lange vor Wolffs Einfluss (›System‹) ein, der gleichwohl eine deutliche Zäsur bildet – allerdings nicht in dem Sinne, dass nach dem Abklingen dieses Einflusses die Eklektik wieder ihr Haupt erhoben hätte. Auch wenn die katholische Eklektik noch einmal den Begriff der freien, selbstständigen Auswahl aufgriff, so bedeutete Eklektik am Ende des Jahrhunderts doch bei wichtigen Autoren, genauso wie heute, unselbstständige Vermischung, also Synkretismus im pejorativen Sinn. Dennoch gelang dem Begriff eine dreimalige Wiederkehr (Kap. 7): Cousins eklektischer Theaterdonner, der aber sowohl wegen der darauf bezogenen Kritik der Künstler wichtig ist als auch wegen der Zustimmung in der französischen Medizin; die eklektische Richtung (bzw. Sekte!) in der amerikanischen Medizin des 19. Jahrhunderts; die eklektische Psychotherapie des 20 Jahrhunderts.

This thesis is a systematic reconstruction of Hobbes’ work. It focuses on the relation between his mechanistic ontology and the manifestation of modern subjectivity in his philosophy. Hobbes wants to elaborate a self-conception of man within the new mechanistic paradigm which enables physics to be a successful science of the world. That is why he admits feelings, perceptions, thoughts and intentions as phenomena of self-experience and applies the mechanistic paradigm to them. Paradoxically enough, this very application is shown to make man emerge as a subject in contrast to nature as an object in Hobbes’ work. Although the theory of this subjectivity cannot be deduced from the materialistic ontology, the way Hobbes considers this subjectivity depends on this ontology. Nevertheless, Hobbes fails to establish this subjectivity within the mechanistic order of the world. Hence reflecting on Hobbes’ theory as a product of this subjectivity results in scepticism: Each person has his or her own private reason. No proposition can claim an objective validity. This book reveals these sceptical consequences in Hobbes’ theory of knowledge. His theory of unrestricted sovereignty is shown to be the political consequence of this epistemological scepticism. In contrast to common belief, the results of the book culminate in the thesis that it is Hobbes (not Descartes) to have worked out an entirely modern philosophy for the first time: He considers reason and subjectivity to be eo ipso active. This feature of his theory is a landmark to modern philosophy. This book shows that the seperation between subject and object, mind and nature cannot be traced back to the admission of classical metaphysical conceptions in modern philosophy of mind: In Hobbes’ philosophy, the mechanistic paradigm immanently gives rise to this separation – just because Hobbes wants to develop a self-conception for man within this paradigm.

This volume contains approximately 240 letters in which Reuchlin deals with questions pertaining to grammar and exegetics among other things and in his capacity as a judge of the Swabian League corresponds with litigants. The private correspondence during these years focused on Reuchlin’s conflicts with the Faculty of Theology in Cologne regarding his expert assessment of Jewish literature which he had defended in his pamphlet ›Augenspiegel‹ in 1511 against the hostilities of Johannes Pfefferkorn’s. Reuchlin’s official correspondence on the other hand dealt with various protracted court cases; this is presented in the appendices, in context, each case supplemented by overviews of the oral proceedings. This also includes a chronological list of all the letters which illustrates the sequence and the juxtaposition of the humanistic correspondence and the official correspondence.

Rhetoric once had a kingly position. Deposed and transformed, it is effective today under changed conditions and other names. A barely discovered, yet productive ferment of postmodernism is the rhetorical use of reason. This thesis is one of the motives of reasearch fo Rhetorica II, which follows up on Rhetorica I with a re-reading of Aristotle, Quintilian and Augustine. Two rhetorically conceived models of the conjectural use of reason are brought to light in theis epistemic-historical study: Vico's Metaphysics and Lévi-Strauss' Mythologica. Both prove to be guiding references in finding answers – based on principles that are, however, not of scientific-dogmatic nature – to those questions asked by reason, which are dependent on conjecture and combination, disentanglement and relation, and communication and emotion.With reference to Vico, rhetoric was already a driving force in the change of paradigm from the rationally directed metaphysics of the ideal world to the rhetorically conceived criticism of reason as a reconstruction of the mondo civile. rhetorica II shows that Lévi-Strauss abides by Vico's productive concept of reason and understands the myth to be a spiritual product of rhetorical origin. This approach makes it possible to enter wild thinking into the history of reason. Through Rhetorica II, conjectural rationality regains its place in the universe of knowledge. The book invites philosophers to take a new look at rhetoric and outlines o philosophy of finiteness. It advises us to strengthen the competence of reason regarding contingency in order to deal with the threats of the present age.

The lectures which Bernard Bolzano held from 1805 up to his dismissal in January of 1820 as a professor for Catholic religious education at the University of Prague in the context of the philosophical studies were published anonymously in 1834 in a four-volume edition with which Bolzano was very unhappy. As part of the collected works of Bolzano there is now for the first time a new critical edition of this work which includes the corrections and variants of a master copy authorized by Bolzano. The textbook is divided into three parts: In the first part Bolzano explains the concept of religion and other terms which are essential for his philosophy of religion and presents the most important theories of natural religion and rational religion, divided into “natural dogmatics” and “natural morality.” In the second part, Bolzano studies the miracles which serve as a confirmation of Catholic Christianity. In the third part, he describes the individual individual articles of faith of “Old Catholic dogmatics” and those of “Old Catholic morality.”

The student transcripts of this volume considerably facilitate our understanding of Fichte’s difficult and terse preparatory texts. This not only holds for the revised lectures of the later works on the ›Rechtslehre‹ and ›Sittenlehre‹ of 1812, but also for ›The Facts of Consciousness‹ and the ›Wissenschaftslehre‹ (both from early 1813), the ›Introduction to the Wissenschaftslehre‹ (Fall, 1813) and the 1814 ›Wissenschaftslehre‹. The lecture transcript entitled ›Darstellung des Christenthums‹ documents a portion of the lectures on the ›Staatslehre‹. Because of its various hypothetical approaches to the elements that constitute consciousness, ›The Facts of Consciousness‹ merely serves as an introduction to the ›Wissenschaftslehre‹. Whereas it is the task of the ›Wissenschaftslehre‹ itself to supply a complete deduction of the cognitive presuppositions of these elements within a systematic framework. War forced the suspension of these lectures, and in winter 1813/14 Fichte renewed his attempt. Of these there is extant a hitherto unpublished transcript of a comprehensive ›Introduction‹; followed by five lectures from the 1814 ›Wissenschaftslehre‹. The latter was cut short by Fichte’s death.

Sebastian Franck’s so-called ›Geschichtsbibel‹ (Historical Bible), published in 1531, became part of the history of ideas. It is however the five books written between 1528 and 1530, which are compiled in the first volume of the edition, which are more useful for gaining a deeper understanding of his background and of his novel and controversial point of view. Sebastian Franck›s early works were without exception translations whose meaning was however changed and even partially reversed by the editor. The process of a paraphrasing problematization, which was typical of Franck, made a commentary imperative, and that is what has been done here. The significance of the idea of a spirituality which transcended all confessions and religions, an idea which was extremely dangerous at that time, emerges when all the modifications in Franck‹s editing become visible. The commentary gives a picture of the young writer’s search in his thoughts and works which will be of interest not only to experts in this field but also to those readers who are less familiar with early Early New High German.
