Die Goldberg Variationen, BWV988, sind eine Folge von 30 Variationen für Cembalo von Johann Sebastian Bach, die dieser im Auftrag des Grafen von Keyserling schrieb. Der russische Gesandte am sächsischen Hof litt unter anhaltender Schlaflosigkeit und erhoffte sich durch den Zauber der Musik eine Linderung von diesem Leiden. Mit den Goldberg Variationen, die als vierter Teil der Serie Clavierübung 1742 zum ersten Mal verlegt wurden, entstand, dank der Insomnia von Keyserling, eine der wichtigsten Kompositionen im Bereich der Variation überhaupt. Ihren Namen erhielten die Goldberg Variationen nach Johnann Gottlieb Goldberg, dem Schützling Keyserlings und Schüler Bachs, der das Werk in einem angrenzenden Raum des schlaflosen Adeligen zum ersten Mal vorgetragen haben soll. Der Pianist Andrea Bacchetti, Jahrgang 1977, gibt eine aus künstlerischer und menschlicher Perspektive ausserordentlich spannende Einführung in die Goldberg Variationen vor dem Hintergrund ihrer Entstehung.

Die Goldberg-Variationen aufzunehmen war für Lang Lang ein Lebenstraum: Nun präsentiert der Star-Pianist sein erstes Barock Album. Mehr als 20 Jahre beschäftigte er sich mit dem Werk von Bach, das als eine der grössten Herausforderungen für Pianisten gilt. Bereits als 17-Jähriger spielte er es auf eine Art und Weise, die den Pianisten und Dirigenten Christoph Eschenbach damals - nachts, in einem leeren Theater - staunend zurückliess: »Auswendig, perfekt studiert, mit enormem Stilvermögen - welches Erlebnis!«, erinnert sich Eschenbach. The “Goldberg” Variations are without a doubt the most important piano cycle of the 18th century. Only Beethoven’s “Diabelli” Variations from the 19th century can be compared to them as far their far-reaching significance is concerned. Bach’s own manuscript might not have survived, but the corrected first printing of the “Aria mit verschiedenen Veraenderungen vors Clavicimbal mit 2 Manualen” (thus the title) has done so. This first edition serves as the primary source for our edition; furthermore the musical text was compared to other sources as, for example, with Bach’s own record of the “Aria” (not yet referred to as such) in the little notebook for Anna Magdalena .

The Clavierübung published in four sections belongs to the few works of Bach that he allowed to be printed during his lifetime. Part I, which appeared in print in 1731, contains the six Partitas; Parts II–IV were issued in 1735, 1739 and 1741/2. These are the parts that form the basis for the compilation that we find in this volume. The Italian Concerto and the French Overture constitute Part II and, in a way, serve as a kind of echo of French and Italian orchestral music of the time, here transposed to the keyboard. The Four Duets are contained in Part III of the Clavierübung, next to important works for the organ; however, since they are conceived for two parts, they are ideal for piano or harpsichord.Finally, the Goldberg Variations form Part IV of the Clavierübungen. According to Bach’s first biographer, Johann Nikolaus Forkel, a Count von Keyserlingk had requested a work from Bach. It was intended for the nobleman’s harpsichordist Johann Gottlieb Goldberg so that he could play pieces of “a gentle and light character” during the Count’s sleepless nights. The result was art-works of the very highest order.
