Les faux amis sont des mots d'orthographe identique, ou presque, en anglais et en français, mais qui ont des significations différentes. Comprendre ou employer mal un de ces mots, risque de vous mettre dans une situation cocasse, voire gênante. D'où vient ce nom « faux ami » ? Ces mots s'appellent des « amis » parce qu'en parlant ou lisant l'anglais, ils semblent familiers, comme un ami. Et c'est vrai que beaucoup de mots ont le même sens, ou presque, en anglais et en français. Après avoir découvert que similar signifie similaire, different signifie différent, stupid signifie stupide et intelligent signifie intelligent, vous serez peut-être surpris de découvrir que, malheureusement, sensible ne signifie pas sensible. Pas du tout ! Et preservative, ne signifie pas un condom, mais un agent conservateur. (Vous pouvez vous imaginer les embarras que vous pourriez avoir avec cela !). Si un mot n'a réellement pas la même signification en anglais, il s'avère être donc un « faux ami ». On peut se tromper en l'entendant ou en le lisant. Mais si vous l'utilisez, et s'il a une signification très différente de celle que vous avez supposée, cela peut produire des effets vraiment embarassants. Ce livre vous présente les faux amis les plus courants et vous explique comment les utiliser et, peut-être même plus important, comment ne pas les utiliser. Thus the French word "colon" means a colonial settler, "patron" can be a pattern (as for a dress) or an employer, while "defiance" means distrust, "une bombe" can mean art insect spray or also an elaborate dessert! And "impotent" is not necessarily sexually impotent, which in French is impuissant, but seriously crippled. The individual entries also provide the wide social and cultural context within which the words are used in French. This book is very instructive as well as great fun.
