Fuel costs and gas emissions are a major concern for transport operators. The rail freight industry must curb rapidly rising fuel costs if it wishes to remain competitive. Researchers at UniSA have been studying the problem of determining driving strategies that minimise fuel use. Their research has led to the development of in-cab system that helps drivers stay on time and reduce energy use. A critical part of constructing an optimal strategy is determining where the control should be changed. Switching points are normally determined from necessary conditions derived via the Pontryagin Principle. In this book we use perturbation analysis to develop an alternative form for the necessary conditions for an optimal strategy over a steep section of track. The new conditions show that the optimal strategy involves a local trade-off between energy used and time taken on each steep section. They have also allowed us to develop more efficient numerical calculation algorithms. Mathematicians, engineers and rail operators will find this book a useful reference for their interests in developing sustainable technologies for rail.

Die Grundidee der DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) ist es, die Input- und Outputfaktoren der jeweiligen DMUs (Decision making unit) so zu gewichten, dass die Produktivität der jeweils betrachteten DMUs maximiert wird und in Relation zur Produktivität aller anderen DMUs gesetzt wird. Geometrisch gesehen wird eine konvexe Hülle über alle beobachteten DMUs gespannt. Um diese Überlegungen graphisch darstellen zu können, werden in einem Diagramm die Effizienzhülle und die ineffizienten DMUs dargestellt. Für den zweidimensionalen (2D) Fall, also den Fall eines Inputs und eines Outputs, gibt es viele Darstellungsmöglichkeiten, für die mittels DEA konstruierte Effizienzhülle. Im dreidimensionalen (3D) Fall, also im Fall eines Inputfaktors und zweier Outputfaktoren oder zweier Inputfaktoren und eines Outputfaktors, besteht die Effizienzhülle aus einer konvexen 3D Fläche, einem sogenannten Produktionsgebirge. Ziel dieser Magisterarbeit ist es, ein Programm zu entwickeln, welches die mittels DEA generierte Effizienzhülle für eine gegebene Datenmenge in einem 3D Diagramm inklusive der schwach effizienten Abschnitte darstellen kann.

Der deutsche Mathematiker Rudolf Otto Sigismund Lipschitz (1832–1903) befasste sich mit nahezu sämtlichen Gebieten der Mathematik. Sein bedeutendstes Werk ist sein „Lehrbuch der Analysis“; welches in zwei Bänden erschien (Bonn 1877 und 1880). Vorliegendes Buch ist der erste Band. Lipschitz studierte in Königsberg und Berlin Mathematik. Nach seiner Promotion bei Gustav Dirichlet und Martin Ohm hielt er zunächst Vorlesungen in Berlin und Breslau, bis er schliesslich einen Lehrstuhl in Bonn erhielt. Der bekannte Mathematiker Felix Klein zählte unter anderem zu seinen Schülern und war auch sein Assistent. Auf Lipschitz geht der Begriff der „Lipschitz-Stetigkeit“ zurück, welcher noch heute in der Mathematik von grosser Bedeutung ist.

Der deutsche Mathematiker Moritz Pasch (1843-1930) beschäftigte sich insbesondere mit den Grundlagen der Geometrie. Nach ihm ist das "Axiom von Pasch" benannt, das eine Lücke in Euklids axiomatischen Aufbau der Geometrie schliesst. Nach dem Studium in Breslau und der Promotion (1865) habilitierte sich Pasch 1870 an der Justus-Liebig Universität in Giessen mit einer Arbeit "Zur Theorie der Komplexe und Kongruenzen von Geraden". 1873 wurde er zum ausserordentlichen Professor ernannt und zwei Jahre später zum ordentlichen Professor berufen. 1887 wurde ihm die Direktion des mathematischen Seminars übertragen.

Surface defects, such as gauge corner cracking on the railway track can be a difficult class of defects for existing on-line non-destructive testing techniques to detect and size accurately at high speed. There are economic and safety benefits to have an accurate, fast and reliable NDT technique to detect such defects. The EMAT pitch-catch ultrasonic testing technique, using the Rayleigh surface wave, has been shown to be able to detect and size surface defects. The pitch-catch geometry also allows this technique to be used at high speed on-line NDT applications. This research has also identified a number of ultrasonic signal features that arise from the interaction between the surface wave and surface defects, such as: the non-linear laser generation effect, the signal enhancement effect, and the Rayleigh wave recovery effects. They can have potential NDT applications for detecting and sizing surface defects. The ferrite enhanced EMAT is able to generate similar ultrasonic surface waves to the conventional EMATs, in some cases, with higher generation efficiency and better stand-off performance. This research should be of interest to those in ultrasonic NDT community.

Die Riemannsche Vermutung ist eines der wichtigsten noch ungelösten Probleme der heutigen Mathematik. Sie geht auf den deutschen Mathematiker Georg Friedrich Bernhard Riemann zurück, der sie 1859 aufstellte. Der Grund für die grosse Bedeutung der Riemannschen Vermutung liegt in der Verbindung der komplexen Analysis mit der analytischen Zahlentheorie. In dem Spezialfall für Kurven über endlichen Körpern können wir die Vermutung beweisen. Dieser Beweis wurde von André Weil 1940 erbracht. 1973 wurde er von Enrico Bombieri erneut geführt, wobei Bombieri den Beweis vereinfachte und fast nur Techniken der algebraischen Geometrie nutzte. Der Spezialfall der Vermutung hat ebenfalls wichtige Folgerungen. Mit ihrer Hilfe lassen sich Abschätzungen über die Anzahl rationaler Punkte von Kurven über endlichen Körpern herleiten, die z.B. zur Optimierung geometrischer Codes verwendet werden. Zudem war dieser Spezialfall von Bedeutung für den Beweis des letzten Satzes von Fermat. In diesem Buch werden die benötigten Grundlagen für den Beweis der Riemannschen Vermutung für Kurven über endlichen Körpern zusammengetragen und der Spezialfall wird ausführlicher und elementarer bewiesen.

Intestinal parasites usually inhabit the gastro- intestinal tract during part or the whole of their life cycle. Parasitological analysis of foodstuffs and stool samples was done at Kisii Provincial Hospital.. The prevalence of intestinal parasites was significantly high in the meat samples stored in the wire mesh compared to those stored in the refrigerator ( 2 = 37.628, df = 2, p=0.000). There was a significantly high prevalence of intestinal parasites on meat samples whose surfaces had houseflies ( 2 =65.737, df = 2, P=0.000). This study has shown that there were risks of acquiring pathogenic intestinal parasitic infections from various sources with meat posing the highest risk of intestinal parasite transmission (75.9 %), followed by vegetables (65.5 %) and food handlers (41.1%). The risk of infections by intestinal parasites from various sources indicated a statistically significant difference between various sources ( 2 = 214.966, df = 2, p0.00).

Will German car advertisings be successful in a French environment if translated literally and vice versa? This study elaborates an analysis methodology for print advertising that results from a broad overlook over related issues. Advertising is seen as a mirror of society that reflects its specific culture. As such, significant data about the German and the French culture can be extracted from advertisings by analyzing the verbal and non-verbal content. This study relates research in semiology, text gendres, verbal and non-verbal communication, and content analysis. The extracted information is useful in synthesizing qualitative and quantitative aspects of current research in the domain of advertisings. The results indicate that nowadays advertisings show important differences in the appeal as well as in the stylistic design/execution in form of written texts and images. The conclusion of this research is antagonistic to the influencial thesis of the world as one "global market" (Levitt, 1983).
