Arno Schmidt war schon Anfang 40, als er den "Ulysses" von James Joyce 1956 zum erstenmal las, und was wichtiger ist: er war schon ein Autor von eigenem Format. Schmidt blieb Schmidt, auch nachdem er Joyce für sich entdeckte, und er wurde nie zu dem Joyce-Epigonen, für den ihn manche Kritiker immer noch halten. Allerdings ist unverkennbar, dass bei der Neuorientierung Schmidts ab 1960 Joyce (und vor allem dessen Spätwerk "Finnegans Wake") eine immense Rolle spielte, die allenfalls noch mit derjenigen Sigmund Freuds zu vergleichen ist. Schmidt sah an den Joyce'schen Schreibweisen, welchen Reichtum an Möglichkeiten die moderne Prosa eröffnete, erkannte für sich selbst allerdings auch Grenzen, die Joyce bereitwillig überschritten hatte. Alle strukturellen und punktuellen Bezüge (Titel- und Namensnennungen, Anspielungen, Zitate und Übernahmen) zur Joyce-Rezeption hat Friedhelm Rathjen in einem annotierten Fundstellenverzeichnis und chronologischer Folge versammelt und mit Erläuterungen versehen, die Quellen erschliessen und Verständnishilfen geben. Der Band konzentriert sich auf "Zettels Traum" und Schmidts Werk der 1970er Jahre; hinzu kommen Nachträge zum Vorgängerband Rathjens ("...schlechte Augen": James Joyce bei Arno Schmidt vor "Zettels Traum", 1988).

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Didactics - English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,7, University of Münster, language: English, abstract: In James Joyce¿s novel "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" a variety of narrative techniques is used. In this research paper I want to explore how the use of different narrative techniques correlates with and indicates the protagonist¿s development towards both an artist and an autonomous adult. Except of the concluding diary entries, the novel is narrated by a third-person narrator who has got a limited point of view since he is focalized through Stephen. The narrator presents Stephen¿s consciousness and activities in various ways; an important aspect about his narration is that he persistently adapts his style to Stephen¿s idiom and mood. In some passages the narrator reports almost objectively on events, however, often he renders Stephen¿s consciousness, for which he uses different narrative techniques. Since Dorrit Cohn is thought to be one of the most important researchers on the field of narrative techniques concerning the presentation of consciousness, I will base this research paper on her definitions. Cohn distinguishes three ways a third-person narrator can use for rendering a person¿s consciousness: psycho-narration, narrated monologue and quoted interior monologue, all of which are used in the novel. I will focus on psycho-narration and narrated monologue since these are the techniques predominantly used. Psycho- narration is the narrator¿s description of a character¿s thoughts and feelings, thus, it is the most indirect way of rendering a character¿s consciousness. The third-person reference and the tense of narration are maintained. The presence of a narrator is marked since a verbum dicendi is always used. Narrated monologue uses the third person singular and the preterite as well; however, at the same time the syntactical structure remains that of direct discourse with exclamations, questions, repetitions, interjections and exaggerated emphases. The effect of narrated monologue is to reduce as far as possible the distance between the narrator and the character existing in all third person narrations. Since psycho- narration and narrated monologue use a third-person narrator and the same time span, the two techniques can alternate without perceptible transitions. As a result, the narrator can weave in and out of the character¿s thoughts and the distance between narrator and character can be eliminated.

James Joyce: Developing Irish Identity follows the increasing focus on Irish identity in Joyce’s major works of prose. This study traces the development of the idea of Ireland, the concept of “Irishness;” the formation of a national identity and the need to deconstruct a nationalistic self-conception of nation in Joyce’s work. Through close reading of Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Stephen Hero and Ulysses, Joyce articulates the problems that colonialism poses to a nation-state that cannot create its identity autonomously. Furthermore, this reading uncovers Joyce’s conception of national identity as increasingly sophisticated and complicated after Irish independence was won. From here, Halloran argues that Joyce presents his readers with ideas and suggestions for the future of Ireland. As Irish studies become increasingly imbricated with postcolonial discourse, the need for re-examination of classic texts becomes necessary. James Joyce: Developing Irish Identity provides a new approach for understanding the dramatic development of Joyce’s oeurve by providing a textual analysis guided by postcolonial theory.

Setting of from the assumption that Freud's ground-breaking claims must have found their way into the complex, allusion-laden writing of his contemporary Joyce, it works out elements in the hallucinatory "Circe" chapter that refer to Freud's theory on dreams, concentrating specifically on the portrayal of Bloom. After an overview of the central aspects of Freud's Interpretation of Dreams, the structure of "Circe" will be introduced, justifying the analogy to dreams and tackling the general problem of applying psychoanalysis to literary criticism. The next chapter will take a closer look at Freud¿s idea of regression and enumerate elements that may be considered allusions to this in ¿Circe¿. Building on this, the final chapter will then be an attempt at a psychoanalytic reading of Bloom, also drawing upon some additional ideas from Freud¿s later theories.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2000 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Komparatistik, Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft, Note: 2,3, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: ,,Ich habe nichts gelesen, das ihn übertrifft, und bezweifle , je etwas gelesen zu haben, das ihm gleichkäme" (A.Bennett) Ohne Frage ist James Joyces ,,Ulysses" ein Jahrhundertbuch: Ein Buch das immer wieder mit Marcel Prousts ,,A la Recherche du Temps Perdu" auf diversen Bestenlisten um Platz 1 in der Kategorie des ,,grossartigen" Buches aller Zeiten konkurriert, ein Buch das zwar nur an einem Tag, dem 16.Juni 1904 spielt, aber trotzdem von einer Komplexität und Beziehungsfülle ist, die seines gleichen sucht. ,,Ulysses" ist mit seiner Vielschichtigkeit an Bedeutungen, den angewandten Erzähltechniken und seiner Motiv- und Symbolfülle einzigartig in der Literatur des 20.Jahrhunderts, eine ,,spasshaft-geschwätzige allumfassende Chronik mit vielfältigstem Material", wie Joyce selbst einmal erwähnte. Aber eben der Detailreichtum des Buches, seine unzähligen, auch noch so kleinen Anspielungen machen es selbst dem geübten Leser schwer, den Überblick zu behalten und zieht damit nicht nur Bewunderung, sondern auch starke Ablehnung an, weil ,,Ulysses" einfach schwer zu verstehen ist, vielleicht nie ganz verstanden werden kann. ,,Ich habe so viele Geheimnisse und Rätsel hineingesteckt, dass es die Professoren jahrhundertelang im Streit darüber halten wird, was ich wohl gemeint habe und nur so sichert man sich Unsterblichkeit" hat Joyce einmal dazu gesagt. Eine Möglichkeit, einen Teil dieser Geheimnisse zu entziffern, besteht darin sich die Biographie des Autors anzuschauen, eine Methode, die vor allem bei einem Autor sinnvoller erscheint, über den sein berühmtester Biograph, Richard Ellmann hinsichtlich ,,Ulysses" feststellt: ,,Nichts in diesem Buch wurde aufgenommen, was nicht irgendwie persönlich und mit Joyce verknüpft ist". Zwar wird von Kritikern immer wieder das Argument vorgebracht, biographisches Material sei nebensächlich oder sogar bedeutungslos um bedeutende Kunst zu verstehen, es verzerre nur die Kunst oder mache sie, indem sie mit der Biographie des Künstlers in Verbindung gebracht wird, geringfügiger, weil das Hauptaugenmerk auf den Künstler und nicht auf die Kunst an sich gerichtet wird. James Joyce and the Mythology of Modernism examines anew how myth exists in Joyce’s fiction. Using Joyce’s idiosyncratic appropriation of the myths of Catholicism, this study explores how the rejected religion still acts as a foundational aesthetic for a new mythology of the Modern age starting with A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and maturing within Ulysses. Like the mythopoets before him—Homer; Dante, Milton, Blake—Joyce consciously sets out to encapsulate his vision of a splintered and rapidly changing reality into a new aesthetic which alone is capable of successfully rendering the fullness of life in a meaningful way. Already reeling from the humanistic implications of an impersonal Newtonian universe, the Modern world now faced an Einsteinian one, a re-evaluation which includes Stephen's awakening from the "nightmare" of history, a re-definition of deity, and Bloom's urban identity. Written with both the experienced Joycean and the beginner in mind, this book tells how the Joycean myth is our own conception of the human being, and our place in the universe becomes (re)defined as definitively Modernist, yet still, through Molly Bloom’s final affirmation, profoundly human.
