Here is the first book to focus on college writing teachers and the ways in which they are affected by graduate rhetoric pedagogy courses. Wendy Bishop observed teachers enrolled in a doctoral seminar, titled "Teaching Basic Writing," and then conducted case studies of five of those teachers in their college writing classrooms to investigate how their teaching practices changed and how their previous professional and personal histories influenced their ability to make those changes.

Robert Brooke and John Hendricks examine the difficult task of teaching "writing for an audience" in a classroom where students know that the teacher, not the addressed audience, assigns the grade. The authors describe in detail a particular writing class, taught by Brooke and observed by Hendricks, that attempted to teach writing for an audience. 1896 starb in St. Gallen der angesehene Bankier Jakob Laurenz Gsell-Lutz im Alter von 81 Jahren. 110 Jahre später macht sein Name im US-Bundesstaat Illinois in der Presse von Chicago Schlagzeilen. Seine Vergangenheit als erfolgreicher Unternehmer in Rio de Janeiro in den 1840er-Jahren hatte ihn eingeholt. Gsell berichtete damals seinen Eltern in unzähligen mehrseitigen, eloquent geschriebenen Briefen von seinen Erlebnissen in der von weissen Einwanderern und farbigen Sklaven geprägten Zwei-Klassen-Gesellschaft Brasiliens, wo er sich aus eigener Kraft vom Handlungsgehilfen zum Unternehmer empor arbeiten konnte. Dank der Veröffentlichung der Briefe durch seine Urenkelinnen ist bekannt, dass er in Geschäft und Haushalt dunkelhäutige Menschen beschäftigte, die nach damaliger Gepflogenheit zu mieten oder zu kaufen waren. Nach 15 Jahren kehrte Gsell als wohlhabender Mann nach St. Gallen zurück, wo er sich in Bankenvorständen sowie als Firmengründer engagierte. Heute müssen die global tätigen Rechtsnachfolger dieser Finanzinstitute (z.B. UBS Securities) in einzelnen amerikanischen Bundesstaaten ihre Firmengeschichte offen legen und für Profite aus der Zeit vor der 1888 erfolgten Sklavenbefreiung gerade stehen, wollen sie dort weiterhin Geschäfte tätigen.
