Bilder – Objekte – Plakate Eine Serie seiner Acrylbilder nennt Klaus-Martin Treder (*1961) »Orientierungsverlust und Ästhetik«. Demgegenüber aber strukturiert sich sein Œuvre in drei klar voneinander unterscheidbare Formate, sodass Orientierungsverlust also wohl eher als das Motiv der Arbeiten und weniger als die operative Grundlage ihrer Entstehung aufgefasst werden darf. Da gibt es zunächst die als »Bilder« in Serien und Werkgruppen zusammengefassten Gemälde und Papierarbeiten, sodann die »Objekte« und des Weiteren die »Plakate«. Sein Werk steckt voller selbst- und fremdreferenzieller technischer und diskursiver Bezüge. Durch die freie Kombination der einzelnen Produktionsschritte bringt der Künstler per Montage Farbhäute, schlanke Tropfenkaskaden oder gar plumpe Girlanden mit gedropten und geschütteten Farbgründen zusammen. Da stehen Bildelemente prekär von der Oberfläche ab, treten oder hängen frei über die Umgrenzung hinaus, um bei Luftzug in sanfte Bewegung zu geraten oder selbst bei sensiblem Handling abzufallen zu drohen. Das unterstreicht den Objektcharakter, den gemalte Bilder zwangsläufig haben, und wirft zugleich die Frage nach dem Raum auf, in dem sich ein Bild als Bild präsentiert und begreifen lässt. Die Frage nach Wirkung und Bedeutung von Bildern wird zudem durch die auf die Bildoberfläche applizierten Elemente verschärft – ein kunterbuntes Arsenal von Dingen, die aus dem Alltag vertraut sind: Bonbons und Süssigkeiten, Lippenstift und Shampoo, Kaffeebohnen und Krawatten, Asthmaspray und Farbtuben, sogar Kopf- und Körperhaar. Ins Auge sticht zudem die unbändige Farbigkeit, die weder expressiv noch formalistisch daherkommt. In der konzeptionellen Materialisierung der Farbe aus der Tube – gleichsam als »ready made«! – wird Malerei hier als Institution der Kunst in ihrem ontologischen Status neu bestimmt. In der Gestaltung folgt das Buch einem Konzept des Künstlers, indem um jeden zweiten Druckbogen ein vierseitiger, andersfarbiger, aber unbedruckter Bogenteil gelegt, also eine Art kontemplative »Pause« eingeschaltet wird. So ist diesem Band die wahre Lust an der Buchkunst mitgegeben, nämlich etwas zum Blättern, zum Bewegen und zum Innehalten in den Händen zu haben.

Art, an emotional piece In 2015, Martin Creed realized a range of site-specific installations for the Kunstverein Heilbronn in the six large halls of the Kunsthalle Vogelman; the following year he did an equally site-specific presentation at Taxispalais in Innsbruck. These exhibitions are both premieres, in Germany as well as in Austria. Martin Creed does not settle for any medium in particular, he produces videos, paintings, sculptures and works in neon, he makes music and stages ballet productions. The physical environment always plays an important role. In 2001, the London-based Scottish artist was awarded the prestigious Turner Prize, for a work that »only« consisted of regularly switching the light in a room on and off. What at first glance appears rather reduced, is highly relevant for the entire room and the visitors who move in it. Martin Creed's brilliant work on one hand appears playful and amazingly friendly, but in its result it is preemptory and rigorous. In a very personal interview, Martin Creed was asked why he made art. His answer was: to make myself feel better.
