Wo sich Calder, Dalí und Herold eine App teilen! David Czupryn (*1983) hat bei Georg Herold, Lucy McKenzie und Tomma Abts in Düsseldorf studiert. Er ist ein Meister des Trompe-l’Œil-Effektes; jener jahrhundertealten Kunst der Augentäuschung, die bei ihm ein unerwartetes Comeback feiert. Mit Pinsel und Farbe bildet er mimetisch Oberflächen nach, Handschrift und Gestus werden so geradezu provokativ negiert. Die Bilder – David Czupryn arbeitet mit starken harmonischen Kontrasten und trägt die Farbe transluzid auf – wirken wie aus einem Guss, sie sind nicht fotorealistisch, sondern illusionistisch dreidimensional. Den ruhigen Gründen, Standflächen und Bewegungsmotiven werden Pfeile und andere grafische Elemente beigesellt. Neben ausgreifenden Gliedmassen ziehen gebrochene Symmetrien, Fallendes, Schwebendes, Verbundenes, Verschränktes, Geöffnetes und Durchsichtiges die Aufmerksamkeit auf sich – gleichsam Bilder im Bild, aber auch einander umspielende Versatzstücke. Kein Wunder, dass der Maler die Surrealisten schätzt, aber auch eine gewisse Vorliebe für Alfred Kubin bekundet. Die Verrätselung, die er betreibt, steht aber nicht in der Tradition der Schwarzen Romantik, sondern erinnert an Alexander Calder und Naum Gabo, aber natürlich auch an das spitzbübische Werk von Georg Herold. So lassen sich David Czupryns Bilder denn auch ohne Umschweife als gemalte Installationen begreifen, in denen Konstruktivismus, Kinetik und Surrealismus ironische Urständ feiern. All dreams are in us prophetic Rockets, guns, body fragments, collages, stencils, spray paints and crazy colours are the characteristic elements that populate Kiki Kogelnik’s multicoloured universe. Kogelnik was born in 1935 in Graz and grew up in Klagenfurt, Carinthia. After her time at the Vienna Academy, she left for the USA in 1961, ultimately settling in New York City in 1962. It is then no accident that the East-Coast Pop Art canon, popularised by her male counterparts at this time, resonates in her work. But contrary to the material games or pronounced brand fetishism of her contemporaries, the young Austrian hoisted the standard of expanding consciousness and, from Pop Art’s very inception, viewed the relationship between the love of technology and conquest mentality with an extremely critical eye. It is possible to see this in her paintings, alternatively they can be read as critical statements, as well as a naïve contemporary witness to sixties’ euphoria. Utopia is the magic watchword that sums up Kiki Kogelnik’s formal and thematic peregrinations; she is interested in transformation, in overcoming the perplexities of space and time, and she always considered the present to be the start of a better future. Small wonder than that she espoused Women’s Lib and, from that point on, devoted herself to issues of gender affiliation. The retrospec-tive exhibition at the Kunstverein Hamburg and the elaborately designed and printed catalogue, bear eloquent witness to all these various stages in the oeuvre of an unusual artist. Kiki Kogelnik died in Vienna in 1997.

Painting with RustGiovanna Sarti (born 1967 in Cervia, Italy, lives in Berlin) studied under Per Kirkeby at the Städelschule in Frankfurt. In 2013, she took part in the exhibition »Painting Forever« at Deutsche Bank Kunsthalle in Berlin. Giovanna Sarti is a nonfigurative painter. For her, painting is first of all an intensive examination of the possibilities of the material; besides pigment, ink, varnishes and coal she uses metal powders, and has recently began working in layers using rust. She initially applies it onto the canvas and then has it fixed before working the canvases at her studio using acrylic paints, ink and/or varnish. Occasionally the various paint mediums react chemically with one another. Such processes cannot entirely be controlled, and the artist is deliberately using the inherent dynamics of the material, because she places great importance to precisely this processual way of working. Thus, the layered structure of her work is to be seen less in reference to external conditions but, rather, as an analogy to existential psychological processes, since the paint layers are superimposed, like memories. »The daily slow layering of images, thoughts and feelings allows me to experience my work as real, and not as an abstraction«, says Giovanna Sarti. And as nature, memory, and life, Giovanna Sarti’s work combines beauty with roughness. Even when the images shimmer with metal dust, or even when the colour pink comes into play, as soon as rust rages across the rough linen of the canvas in a great big dance, they maintain the tension.Exhibition:Kunstverein Heilbronn, 24/9–20/11/2016

Objects on a higher level Lamps, furniture, bicycles, typography, museum pedestals – the work of Mathieu Mercier, winner of the Prix Marcel Duchamp (2003), born 1970 in Conflans-Saint-Honorine and now living in Paris, moves confidently between art and everyday culture. He keeps referring back to the work of his heroes Marcel Duchamp and Piet Mondrian. Yet, Mathieu Mercier does not want to make inaccessible art, but works that are »instantly descriptive and attractive«. The banal everyday objects he presents are indeed at first simply beautiful. Mercier speaks in this regard of »sublimation«, of a finishing process that guides the objects to a higher level. The targeted change of position, the permanent exchange between high and low, raises the question as to the status of things between functionality and artistic purposelessness. Mathieu Mercier skillfully reflects the concepts of Western culture of the 20th century in the field of tension between modern architecture, design and visual arts.

These paintings from Allan Kaprow never had been seen Allan Kaprow (1927–2006) is internationally renowned mainly as an action artist. Not only did he coin the term Happening – he gave distinction to this art form in New York in the late 1950s. Also his environments – huge, changeable installations, made from material such as car tires, drums and ice blocks – are regarded as milestones in recent art history. Allan Kaprow did, however, began his artistic career as a painter, not least in connection with his studies under Hans Hofmann; in addition, he studied art history under Meyer Shapiro and composition with John Cage. He was, therefore, not only open to theory at an early stage, but also to various artistic and interpretative approaches. He always moved between the tension-filled areas of intuition, open form and time reference on the one hand, and the reflexive practice as a theoretician and art historian on the other. The exhibition at Villa Merkel in Esslingen was, for the first time, exclusively dedicated to his early paintings from the time between 1946 and 1957, and reveals the role models the young artist chose to follow and work on, and, in particular, his interest in questions on space as well as his endeavor to somehow contextualize the achievements of Jackson Pollock and John Cage. This extends to the works created during the mid-1950s, which he called »action collages« and in which he gradually incorporated everyday materials and objects. When looking through the works which are constantly periodically interrupted by one of the »drafts«, it is very quickly possible to see in the rhythm of Günther Förg’s pictures the extent abstract painting is and remains superior to figurative ideas of these years.

Georg Herold has truly experienced many moments of success and brilliance, distinctions and presentations. That is why now, after he turns 70 in July 2017, he can look back on an impressive career, and calmly prepare a retrospective at Kunstmuseum Bonn. He is now regarded as one of the most prominent international art personalities of the past 30 years, not least because his work embodies an exuberant joy of experimentation. No Walk, no Art Hamish Fulton, born in London in 1946, is working on an entirely independent body of work that is rather poetic and borne by a distinguished, authentic and open-minded attitude. For over 40 years, he has been conveying and acknowledging »walking« as an art form: Walks. Fulton makes Walks in all corners of the world, such as a walk »From Coast to Coast« in the UK, for instance. Art, an emotional piece In 2015, Martin Creed realized a range of site-specific installations for the Kunstverein Heilbronn in the six large halls of the Kunsthalle Vogelman; the following year he did an equally site-specific presentation at Taxispalais in Innsbruck. These exhibitions are both premieres, in Germany as well as in Austria. Martin Creed does not settle for any medium in particular, he produces videos, paintings, sculptures and works in neon, he makes music and stages ballet productions. The physical environment always plays an important role. In 2001, the London-based Scottish artist was awarded the prestigious Turner Prize, for a work that »only« consisted of regularly switching the light in a room on and off. What at first glance appears rather reduced, is highly relevant for the entire room and the visitors who move in it. Martin Creed's brilliant work on one hand appears playful and amazingly friendly, but in its result it is preemptory and rigorous. In a very personal interview, Martin Creed was asked why he made art. His answer was: to make myself feel better.
