This Supplement is intended to provide a diverse and extensive range of additional practice material for use in mastering the grammatical content of Introducing Biblical Hebrew by Allen P. Ross (Grand Rapids: Baker Academic, 2001). It is based upon the writing system, vocabulary, morphology and syntax of Biblical Hebrew as these are presented in Introducing Biblical Hebrew, running parallel to the first 41 chapters of that volume. Chapters 1-6 deal progressively with the introductory issues of writing and pronouncing Hebrew, with practice based upon Genesis 1-2. Three types of exercise accompany the study of vocabulary, morphology and syntax: parsing of isolated forms, with emphasis upon the verb (chapters 10-41); two sections of sentences composed in Hebrew, the first focussed upon the material of the current chapter and the second containing longer sentences drawn from all the material encountered up to that point (chapters 3-41, with isolated phrases initially); and three sections of passages drawn directly from the Hebrew Bible (chapters 9-41) - isolated verses containing salient features of the grammar studied at that point, longer prose passages (Gen 1:1-2:4, 22:1-19, Deut 8-11, Ruth 1-4, Gen 37:12-36), and short poetic passages from the Psalms (Ps 1, 121, 133, 100, 103, 19, 113, 27, 91, 34, 8). Unfamiliar forms and syntax in the OT passages are footnoted, making it possible to read them without recourse to additional language tools. David M. In this book the author presents an historical examination of sound change and other developments in the very-nearly extinct Gurage language known as Mesmes while also considering the linguistic and social environments in which the language has been lost. The study provides evidence for Mesmes linguistic relatedness with the other Gurage languages and with the Peripheral West Gurage subgroup in particular. The account also considers the impact of phenomena related to language loss and the linguistic effects of contact with Hadiyya, the language to which the Mesmes people have shifted today. The temporal categories of tense and aspect have received much attention in linguistic literature. But often scholars concentrate on their grammatical description without regard to their function in discourse. This work is a comprehensive and systematic description of the function of tense and aspect in the Obolo language. The data for this study are ten texts, both written and oral, from the Ngo dialect of Obolo, which is spoken in southeastern coastal Nigeria. They represent the four main discourse genres of narrative, procedural, expository, and hortatory. In the model adopted for this work, the discussion of tense and aspect in the sentence correlates with the referential component, while the discussion of the discourse functions of tense and aspect correlates with the textual component.

The purpose of this book is to describe the grammatical structure of Akoose, also known as Bakossi, one of the north-western most narrow-Bantu languages of Cameroon. After a brief sketch of the phonology the structure of the noun is presented, including the noun class system typical for Bantu languages. The chapter on the noun phrase includes a discussion of different noun phrase types as well as the noun modifiers, both those that agree with the head noun and those not manifesting any agreement. The form of the associative noun phrase and the semantic relations expressed are also covered. In the chapter on the verb, the verbal extensions (derivational suffixes) and their effect on verb valency are described. Also covered are verb tense, aspect, mood and negation. All the verb forms are illustrated with paradigms showing a complex verbal system. The chapter on the verb phrase includes a discussion of auxiliary verbs which have an interesting range of different functions. There is a chapter on clause types and their constituents. Questions, topicalisation and relative clauses take up another chapter. Reported speech, indirect questions and other clause combinations are covered under complex sentences. There is an appendix giving lists of ideophones, exclamations, comparative wordlists, loanwords and an interlinerised text. The book is aimed at both linguists with an interest in African and in particular Bantu languages as well as a local audience interested in their own language.

These two phonologies of the Chadic languages Muyang and Mbuko present typologically unusual data, the bulk of which is found in the vowel systems. Prosodies of labialization and palatalization can span entire words, affecting both vowels and consonants. Morphemes are of three types: neutral, labialized, and palatalized. At a deep level, these languages have only one or two basic vowels; all other vowel qualities result from the interplay of other factors. The labialization and palatalization prosodies do not operate identically, but may co-occur in Muyang, and possibly in Mbuko. The consonantal and tonal systems also have points of interest. Both Muyang and Mbuko have lateral fricatives, implosive stops and prenasalized voiced stops. Both have three tone levels but no contour tones or downstep. Voiced obstruents and voiced fricatives in Muyang and Mbuko are tonal depressors. These phonologies are written in a broadly generative rule-based framework, but theorists from various persuasions will find much of interest, including Muyang labialization patterns related to adjacency and consonant/prosody/vowel interactions, Mbuko tones and adjacency, and a Muyang [+cor] autosegment causative morpheme. The works in this volume are the result of years of intensive contact with the speakers of Muyang and Mbuko by the authors.

Ukraine has joined these newly independent states with little reliance on the institutions of the civil society. The developments within the Ukrainian art reflect the implications that the failure of the civil society institutionalization has for this particular domain of Ukrainian society. Ukrainian contemporary art that is presented at the major international art museums and art festivals of the contemporary art is a post-Soviet phenomenon that occupies the junction between Ukrainian art, international institutions and civil society. As a field of artistic activity Ukrainian contemporary art strives to differentiate itself from Ukrainian art that originated in the environment largely formed in the pre-independence, Soviet period. The struggles for authority within the field of Ukrainian contemporary art have involved Ukrainian institutions that are outside of it. Both institutional and personal agency within the field of Ukrainian contemporary art is affected by the lack of institutionalized civil society in Ukraine. In the theoretical terms of Pierre Bourdieu it is the case of the lack of autonomy that the field of Ukrainian contemporary art has. The sought-for autonomy would allow the field of Ukrainian contemporary art to exercise control over the resources of artistic authority. How this finds its articulation in the personal narratives of the major Ukrainian contemporary art figures and in the conflicts that happen in the field of Ukrainian contemporary art is the topic of this research. The methodology of multi-sited anthropology adopted in this research makes it possible to trace the contours of the authority relationships among contemporary artists, art institutions and curators at the time of inquiry. The research draws on twenty in-depth interviews arranged in 2001 with the leading figures of the Ukrainian contemporary art, with the prominent art curators that cooperate with the Ukrainian contemporary artists, and with the representatives of the major contemporary art galleries and foundations of Ukraine.
