In diesem Buch wird erstmals der Leibnizschen ‘Janusköpfigkeit‘ Rechnung getragen, d. h. es wird versucht, das Leibnizsche Denken von zwei Seiten zu sehen und darzustellen. Seine philosophische Herkunft aus der Scholastik, wie seine Bedeutung für die gegenwärtige Logik und Philosophie werden gewürdigt und ausführlich dargestellt. Leibniz ist ein Vertreter des protestantischen Aristotelismus. Seine Bildung war scholastisch, seine Terminologie ist scholastisch. Er hat als erster logische Kalküle entwickelt und wurde ausserdem durch seine Theorie der möglichen Welten zum Vorläufer der sog. possible world Semantik für die Modallogik. Auch die deontische Modallogik findet sich bei ihm zum ersten Mal, Originell ist seine Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie, die den Zusammenhang mit der Logik noch nicht verloren hatte. Die Leibnizschen Leistungen in Logik und Semiotik wurden erst aufgrund der Entwicklung der mathematischen Logik durch Boole und Frege verstanden. Eine Interpretation seine Logik und Semiotik setzt deshalb die Kenntnis verschie¬dener Zweige der gegenwärtigen mathematischen Logik voraus, deren Vorläufer er war, Leibniz war ebenso ein origineller Linguist. Es finden sich bei ihm eine Reihe von rationalgrammatischen Analysen und Theorien, die noch wenig beachtet wurden. Im Einzelnen werden in diesem Buch analysiert: die Syllogistik, die rationale Grammatik, die characteristica universalis, die Kombinatorik, die Entwicklung der Kalküle, das Verhältnis von Algebra und Logik, die Geometrie, die ontische und deontische Modallogik, die Beziehung von Logik und Wahrscheinlichkeit, das Verhältnis von Ontologie, Logik und Semiotik.

The systems of cumulative logic treated in this book are introduced as generalisations and at the same time as extensions of the simple theory of types predication is taken to be cumulative in the sense that objects of a fixed type may be predicated of objects with arbitrary lower types, and not only, as in the case of normal simple type theory, of objects having the immediately preceding type. Formal systems of the Gentzen-sequence sort are established with appropriately generalised quantification and abstraction rules. Since the type-homogenous membership relation ( of set theory can he defined in terms of cumulative predication, certain element extensions of the ,pure' Systems of cumulative logic lend themselves to the formalisation of set theory. There are natural extensions of this sort in which Zermelo's set theory can be deduced. The consistency of these Systems is proved and decidability problems are considered At the end of the book, a special system of cumulative logic is set up with close connections to Frege's System in his Grundgesetze der Arithmetik on the one hand, and to Quine's New Foundations on the other. The presentation is broad enough for the book to serve as an introduction to proof theory and to the model theory of type-logics. For example, a semantic proof of the cut-elimination theorem for simple type-theory (following Prawitz) has been included. Der Autor hat sich in der Fachwelt schon vor fünfzehn Jahren durch sein Buch „Die Lehre der Proprietates Terminorum Sinn und Referenz in mittelalterlicher Logik“ (Philosophia Verlag München 1989) einen Namen gemacht… Auch wer die philosophische Grundposition des Autors nicht teilte, hatte keine Mühe, in dem Opus eine herausragende wissenschaftliche Leistung und im Verfasser eine ungewöhnliche philosophische Begabung zu erkennen. Dieser Eindruck bestätigt sich hier erneut… Gegliedert ist diese Untersuchung in zwei Teile, deren ersten der Verfasser als „Vorfragen einer ontologischen Betrachtung" betitelt, während er den zweiten, weit umfangreicheren schlicht mit „Aufbau" überschreibt, weil er hier sein System einer Ontologie von Eigenschaft(en) und Inhärenz errichtet, Die Erörterung von „Vorfragen" in Teil I dient einerseits dazu, den Ort des vom Verfasser überzeugt und überzeugend vertretenen ontologischen Zugangs zu den (klassischen wie modernen) Hauptproblemen der Philosophie neben erkenntnistheoretischen und sprachphilosophischen Zugangsarten auf- zuweisen. Zum anderen wird für einen Primat ontologischer Analysen argumentiert, indem nicht nur gezeigt wird, dass einige wichtige Probleme der Philosophie mit rein erkenntnistheoretischen oder sprachphilosophischen Mitteln nur unzureichend behandelt werden können, wohingegen ontologische Mittel dabei weiter tragen und zur Lösung des philosophischen „puzzles" führen. Diese Argumentation enthält natürlich überwiegend Kritik, die sich z.B. gegen idealsprachliche Versuche oder auch gegen solche des methodischen Konstruktivismus richten, der die ontologische Rede von Eigenschaften oder von Wahrheit durch Reduktion auf die Ebene der Sprachhandlungen vermeiden will. Dufour macht nicht nur allgemein plausibel, dass eine formale Semantik nicht alle Aufgaben einer Ontologie übernehmen kann, sondern auch im Detail, dass die (u.a. durch Quine bewirkte) „Renaissance" ontologischer Betrachtungs- oder zumindest Redeweisen in der Philosophie der Logik die klassischen Ansätze nicht überflüssig macht (weil auch die Entscheidung zwischen konkurrierenden Logiksystemen mit verschiedenen ontologischen „commitments" aufgrund echter ontologischer Erwägungen getroffen werden muss). Positiv wird ver- merkt, dass die erfolgreiche Durchführung z.B. sprachkritischer Analysen eine heutige Ontologie durchaus von Ballast befreien kann; sie kann daher „ontologische Forschung nur begünstigen". Repräsentationistische Theorien, nach denen man „direkte Einsicht nur in die eigenen Vorstellungen gewinnen kann" werden sowohl in ihrer sprachphilosophischen Variante als auch in allen Formen des Idealismus abgelehnt. Es gelingt repräsentationistischen Auffassungen nicht, Brücken zwischen Vorstellung(en) und Realität zu schlagen, ein vom Verfasser mit Recht als crux philosophorum bezeichnetes, die ganze Philosophiegeschichte durch- ziehendes Problem. Petrus Hispanus Portugalensis (ca. 12101205-1277) hat dieses Kompendium der Logik verfasst. Die wichtigste antikehistorische Quelle stellt das Organon des Aristoteles dar, aus dem einerseits die Kernstücke der formalen Logik entnommen wurden, wie assertorische, modale und hypothetische Sätze samt der assertorischen und modalen Syllogistik, sowie die Anwendung für Lösungsversuche von Trugschlüssen, andererseitsandrerseits auch syntaktische und semantische Analysen von Sätzen, und Satzarten, von Teilen gesprochener und Satzteilen, sowie geschriebener Sätze und von der Wahrheit von Aussagen. Ausserdem finden sich[ Ansätze zu einer Philosophie der Logik und] ontologische Betrachtungen über Prädikamentezu Prädikamenten und Universalien. Das Spezifikum der Logica moderna mittelalterlichen Logik ist die Lehre von den proprietates terminorum, d.h. die von den referentiellen Eigenschaften oder Funktionen der Termini, wie suppositio naturalis, simplex undformalis, personalis und materialis, ampliatio, copulatio und appellatio. In dieser Lehre fliessen Sprach-, Begriffs- und Gegenstandsanalysen zusammen, entsprechend einer dreistelligen Semantik, die durch vox-intellectus-res gekennzeichnet ist. Die Summulae Logicales waren für über zwei Jahrhunderte das Standardwerk der Logik und sie erlebten noch in der Zeit des Buchdrucks eine grosse Anzahl von unveränderten Auflagen. Der Übersetzung liegt die kritische Ausgabe von Lambert M. de Rijk aus dem Jahre 1972 zugrunde. Die Übersetzer: Wolfgang Degen arbeitet und lehrt am Institut für Informatik der Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. Er hat über Philosophie, philosophische und mathematische Logik publiziert. Seine mathematischen Schriften beschäftigen sich vorwiegend mit Modelltheorie, Beweistheorie, rekursiver Kombinatorik und Mengenlehre, insbesondere mit verschiedenen Aspekten des Auswahlaxioms. Ein Hauptthema seiner Forschungen sind formale Versionen des Logizismus. Er ist Autor der Systeme der Kumulativen Logik, Philosophia 1983. Bernhard Pabst, geb. 1960, Studium der Fächer Mittellatein, Klassische Philologie und Philosophie, lehrte in Jena und München und ist derzeit Privatdozent an der Universität zu Köln. Seine Publikationen umfassen u.a. Monographien zur Literaturgeschichte und Naturphilosophie des Mittelalters und zum Geistesleben des 13. Jahrhunderts. Between 1100 and 1500 the scholastic philosophers composed about 95 commentaries on the topics. These works concern Aristotle's Topics and Boethius' De Differentis Topicis which together with Boethius' In Ciceronis Topica exerted a significant influence upon the development of medieval logic. Boethius and the medieval authors pay great attention to the question what a locus (topos) is. The function of the locus is described in connection with all the inference-forms which were known to the medieval logicians, viz. categorical and hypothetical syllogism, enthymemes, consequences, the modus ponens and the modus tollens. Boethius is the first author from whom we know the concept of the maxim. Both in the commentaries and in the medieval manuals of logic, for example, of Abelard, Albert the Great, William of Sherwood, Ockham and Buridan, discussions of the topics connect with and contribute to several important logical and philosophical debates, such as those about dialectic, the theory of argumentation, axiomatics, formalism, universals, modal logic, and the theory of consequences, as well as the distinctions between object- and meta-language, inventio and iudicium, and first and second intentions. The discussions in this volume therefore mainly concern the philosophy of logic, which constitutes a uniquely thorough and original treatment of an important logical tradition. Dieses Buch versucht, eine solche Theorie der Akteursverursachung zu entwickeln. Timothy O'Connor und Randolph Clarke brachten die Akteursverursachung in jüngster Zeit wieder in die Debatte ein und stellten sie in den Kontext der analytischen Philosophie. Das Buch zeichnet diesen Kontext nach. Ausgehend vom Konsequenzargument (Peter van Inwagen u.a.) wird geprüft, was für und was gegen eine Theorie der Akteursverursachung spricht. W. van Orman Quine is one of the leading philosophers in America today. His thinking, however, has received little attention from philosophers in continental Europe. This book is a systematic and critical account of Quine’s philosophy which aims at isolating what is of lasting value in his work. Each of his major theses is submitted to a thorough examination both from within and from without his general standpoint. Quine’s positions have changed a great deal over the years in response to external criticism and to internal stresses and strains. These changes are described and assessed. Quine’s rejection of the analytic-synthetic dichotomy is considered in the light of non-monotonic logic. The multi-farious versions of his holism are brought together and evaluated. Dummett’s objection to the effect that holism is inconsistent with empiricism is refuted. lt is argued, however, that the controversial thesis of the indeterminacy of translation becomes implausible as soon as learnability constraints are brought to bear on the matter. Quine’s new definition of logical truth in terms of grammatical structure is vindicated. It is shown how the apparent conflict between his earlier and his later views on ontology can be superseded. Can Quine hold a relativist view of ontology and at the same time maintain a non-relativist theory of truth? Can he hold that truth is internal to theories and claim that scientific theories are underdetermined by observational data without lending support to relativism? An affirmative answer to the first question is defended. It is argued, however, that Quine could not meet the second challenge. Quine’s penetrating criticism of modal logic has prompted several research programs. Paul Gochet exhibits the interrelations between these programs and argues that Quine’s objections against modal logic can be met without any commitment to doctrines such as essentialism. Hickman’s work is a comprehensive investigation, from the standpoint of contemporary logic, of the scholastic theory of secundae intentiones. This theory treats of the problem of what we would now call iterated predication, the problem of properties of properties. Historically it is the scholastic philosophy of the Neuzeit, sometimes called second or post-medieval scholasticism (c. 1500-1800) which forms the object of Hickman’s investigation. The extensive post-medieval discussions of the problem of universals, the realist, conceptualist and nominalist positions of the principal representatives of the epoch, are analyzed and expounded on the basis of their relation to the problem of the secundae intentiones. In the course of his investigations the author has consulted a wealth of manuscript material, much of which is almost unknown, and he extensively cites the most important of these works. The result is therefore more than an exposition: it is also an important source for further scholarly research in this and related fields. This book deals with philosophical issues raised by P.F. Strawson in his Individuals. Strawson there provides a detailed criticism of Leibniz's metaphysics. The present volume argues that while Strawson may find his picture of Leibniz's world a useful foil for his own argument, that picture is fundamentally inconsistent with any possible world attributable to Leibniz himself, and even further removed from what Leibniz himself took to be the actual world. The importance of Leibniz's sources is stressed and documented, especially his correspondence with DeVolder and Des Bosses. But the focus of this book is not solely one of historical accuracy. Strawson's account of the nature of individuals has justifiably stirred great interest among contemporary philosophers, and this present reply to Strawson shows that certain perspectives of the historical Leibniz remain trenchant and relevant to the contemporary discussion of the issue involved. The author distinguishes three ontological levels for Leibniz and details the relations within and among those levels. A critical distinction between full and complete concepts is drawn, and it is further shown that Leibniz makes careful discriminations among the varieties of the principle of the identity of indiscernibles. It is argued that for Leibniz irreducible relations must necessarily obtain among individual substances, and that this claim does not violate the general framework of his logic. The reality of a public space and of bodies as the objective correlatives of our perceptions is maintained. The arguments are a substantive recasting of positions traditionally ascribed to Leibniz, and they will provide the basis for broad discussion and continuing research. Zur Rekonstruktion der Leibnizschen Meta- physik werden formale, insbesondere mathematische, Mittel verwendet, deren Trag- fähigkeit sich gut an der vorgelegten Re- konstruktion der Leibnizschen Theorie von Raum und Zeit zeigt. In dieser Hinsicht versteht sich das Buch der analytischen Tradition ver- pflichtet. Aus der Perspektive des späten Leibniz ist konkret die Aufgabe gestellt, drei grosse Bereiche seiner Metaphysik in einem systematischen Zusammenhang zu verbinden: den monadischen Bereich, den ideellen Bereich und den phänomenalen Bereich. Diese Verbindung verdeutlicht und situiert die grossen Probleme, die die Leibnizsche Metaphysik birgt. Hier ist vor allem Leibniz´ Freiheits-begriff, insbesondere seine Auffassung von der „Freiheit Gottes“;zu nennen.

The present collection of studies by the well-known logician and philosopher J. M. Bochenski include as its principle contribution an analysis of authority, dealing with both cognitive authority in the epistemic sphere and deontic authority in the sphere of action. Where cognitive authority is closely bound up with concepts such science and rationality, the concept of deontic authority can be used to analyse and make precise notions such as freedom, tolerance and anarchism and the concept is shown to be indispensable to the analysis of the concept of a free society. The analytic method which runs through all the studies here collected proves its worth particularly in the author’s highly original studies of social and economic institutions such as the university and the industrial concern. Bochenski’s philosophy of the industrial enterprise in particular establishes results and lines of inquiry which will be of importance to future research. Two of the contributions concern themselves with the relation of philosophy to Weltanschauung and religion providing analyses which are seen by the author as a prolegomena to a still to be written major work in the philosophy of religion. The volume includes also a study of the much-discussed problem of animal experiments, the author proposing a general framework of discussions resting on a new and fruitful application of decision theory. The studies published in this volume are written not by a social scientist but by a logician and a methodologist. Thus they are characterized both by conceptual clarity and by methodological precision. But they are rare in the field of social philosophy. The work may indeed be regarded as a collection of scientifically well-established guides to action, for they represent a rare attempt to come to grips with practical problems using analytic methods, and to show how one might successfully deal with such problems from a scientific point of view. The present volume is a detailed and original study of the traditional, doctrine of terms. It can be regarded as an attempt to tackle the question: ,How would the scholastic philosophers have conceived and defended their doctrine bad they bad at their disposal the methods and techniques of contemporary logic and semantics? The answer provided, a systematic reconstruction of a number of important ideas in the history of logic, is both formally illuminating and entirely faithful to the relevant text. The work begins with a general exposition of the doctrine of terns oriented around the basic semantic opposition between significatio and suppositio, analogues of the more familiar notions of sense and reference. As a means of providing a precise and coherent reconstruction of the doctrine the author does not simply provide the predictable translation of the more amenable passages into the language of predicate logic. Rather he develops, on the basis of a careful systematization of the texts themselves, a formalization of his own, incorporating an ontology of substance and accident. The advantages of this approach are revealed in its capacity to provide both a simple reconstruction of syllogistic logic by means of a sequent-calculus and a natural extension of this logic to a theory of supposition. Taking into consideration the categories of substance and accident in place of the more usual apparatus of set and element allows the author to develop a formalized theory of objects in which the two categories are allowed to yield composite objects of various sorts. This makes possible an illuminating application of the theory of concreta and abstracta (square of permutations) both to the theory of ampliatio and appellatio and to modal syllogistics. The work concludes with a sketch of possible further developments and an attempted demonstration of the philosophical relevance of the theory in the light of a critical consideration of the relevant secondary literature.
