Neun Tänzer und sieben Sänger und Musiker tanzen vor einer, einem Königssohn angemessen opulent gestalteten Kulisse, zu Buschtrommeln. Klassischer Gesang vermischt sich mit Popmusik. The piece ends with a similar scene, in which the woman lies crumpled on her stomach on the hard, dusty ground – shaken down from the cross by the protagonist (Wendy Houston), who having searched for a man to love is instead visited by nightmarish, biblical plagues. Enter Achilles is set in a pub, a place where men meet to drink, sing karaoke and carry out their male rituals, and ends the following morning with a view of the club from the outside. Lloyd Newson’s psychodramas unfold in enclosed spaces such as these. In Dead Dreams of Monochrome Men a bare and unfurnished set, structured using light and shade, a wall, an opening, a bathtub; the hotel in Strange Fish – empty, dusty and abandoned; or the old-world comfort and traditional authenticity of the pub in Enter Achilles. The characters that occupy these spaces react savagely, longing desperately for human company, tenderness and recognition.

Die Elegance-Serie ist eine Sammlung atemberaubendster Ballettaufführungen, sowohl klassische als auch moderne, aus international anerkannten Häusern mit den beliebten Tänzern unserer Zeit. Darunter sind Produktionen von den grossartigen Choreographen der heutigen Zeit sowie natürlich das Vermächtnis des legendären Marius Petipa. Der Geburtsort des Dance Theatre of Harlem war eine stillgelegte Garage im New Yorker Schwarzenviertel Harlem. Arthur Mitchell, Gründer und bis heute künstlerischer Leiter, wollte sich mit der Gründung einer Ballettschule für eine fundierte Ausbildung afro-amerikanischer Tänzer einsetzen, die wegen ihrer Hautfarbe Schwierigkeiten hatten, in den Vereinigten Staaten ein Engagement in den Compagnien zu finden. Seit den bescheidenen Anfängen im Jahr 1969 – die Gründung fand kurz nach der Ermordung von Martin Luther King statt – hat das Dance Theatre of Harlem weltweit grosse Bedeutung erlangt. Heute gibt das Repertoire einen repräsentativen Querschnitt durch die Geschichte des künstlerischen Tanzes wieder. Neben den Klassikern der russischen Schule wie Schwanensee und Schéhérazade wurden die erfolgreichen Tanzstücke des Neoklassizismus der Jahre nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg ebenso gezeigt wie Arbeiten von zeitgenössischen Choreografen. Die DVD enthält mit Fall River Legend, Troy Game, The Beloved und John Henry eine Auswahl der beliebten Werke des Dance Theatre of Harlem.

The 7th Symphony by Beethoven is often referred to as a 'dance symphony' and was described by Wagner as a 'grand apotheosis of the dance', but van Schayk hears in the music the voice of an almost obsessive idealism. Beethoven wrote the his Symphony No. 7 between 1812 and 1813, the last years of the Napoleonic Wars, and the choreographer feels that it expresses the composer's ecstatic longing to reach the sublime future he was convinced lay ahead at the end of the dark period of the war. Music performed by The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, conducted by Bernard Haitink. A great admirer of George Balanchine, Hans van Manen was once told that Beethoven was one of the few composers whose work was impossible to choreograph. Van Manen rose to the challenge, creating Grosse Fuge to Beethoven's String Quartets, opus 133 in B flat major (Grosse Fuge) and the Cavatina from opus 130 in B flat major. The resulting work is an abstract ballet on van Manen's favourite theme - the tension and relationships between human beings. He once said, "As soon as I place two people in an empty room I express a mood or a relationship." Set Design - Jean-Paul Vroom, Costume Design - Hans van Manen, Musicians - Quartetto Italiano With a good deal of ironic and sometimes sarcastic humour eroticism and aggression between man and women are expressed in the Piano Variations choreographed on Prokofiev's Sarcasms Op. 17, to Satie's Gnossiennes Nos. 1, 2 & 3 and Debussy's Etudes No. 12, 2 & 4. In the interview with van Manen he talks about the Piano Variations and his ideas in choreography.
