Empfohlen für Hörer von 0 bis 99 Jahren. Joe Zawinul (Josef Erich Zawinul) - am 7. Juli 1932 in Wien geboren um am 11. September 2007 ebenfalls in Wien verstorben - war ein Jazz-Pianist, Keyboarder, Komponist, Bandleader und Arrangeur. Gemeinsam mit Miles Davis entwickelte er die Stilrichtung des Electric Jazz, auch Jazzrock oder Fusion Music genannt. Er gilt als einer der sehr wenigen Keyboard-Spieler, die am eigenen Spiel und an einem warmen, natürlichen Klang erkennbar sind. Über Jahrzehnte hinweg erhielt Zawinul unzählige Auszeichnungen für sein künstlerisches Werk, darunter mehrere Grammys und 16 Grammy-Nominierungen, insgesamt 28 Down-Beat-Readers'-Poll-Gewinne als bester "Electic Keyboard Player" (davon 25 Mal in Folge), Hans-Koller-Preis (2000), Ehrenring der Stadt Wien (2002) und den "Miles Davis Award" des Montreal Jazz Festivals (2003). Mehrere Musiker widmeten oder benannten Kompositionen nach Zawinul: Brian Eno mit Zawinul/Lava, John McLaughlins mit Jozy und Biréli Lagrène mit Josef.2001 und 2003 gewann er jeweils den Amadeus Austrian Music Award für das "Beste Jazz-/Blues-/Folk-Album des Jahres". Am 24. November 2003 wurde die Musikschule Gumpoldskirchen in Joe-Zawinul-Musikschule umbenannt. Am 24. Mai 2004 ehrte ihn die Österreichische Post mit einer Sondermarke. 2006 wurde Zawinul mit der Ehrenurkunde des "Preises der deutschen Schallplattenkritik e.V." ausgezeichnet.

Throughout his compositional work, Benjamin Britten did his bit to support young people with their musical education – one has only to think, for example, of works such as The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra: Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Henry Purcell op. 34, written in 1945. His Entertainment for Young People written in 1949 and entitled Let’s Make an Opera op. 45, is another example of this didactic approach to composition, although its goals lie beyond simply encouraging children and young people to discover the world of opera. Let’s Make an Opera is also a morality tale that condemns the abuse of children, particularly those suffering social deprivation – represented in this instance by Sam, an apprentice chimneysweep. Let’s Make an Opera is divided into three parts, the first two of which are conceived as pure drama and feature little in the way of musical interludes. In Act One, Mrs. Parsworthy tells a story she had once heard from her grandmother to the children in her care at Iken Hall. It is the tale of Sam, a young chimneysweep. The children are so fascinated by the story that they decide to turn it into an opera. Act Two shows them hard at work rehearsing for the performance. And Act Three, which is an independent entity and suitable for performance on its own, narrates the actual tale of The Little Sweep. In this film, the director Petr Weigl has reworked and enriched the two-part prologue to the story through the introduction of additional characters. Britten himself developed a great personal attachment to the work. In his own words, he associated its composition with “an indescribable feeling of happiness.”

His most famous ballets enjoy a position of honor in the Classical Ballet repertoire on account of their melodic intensity and instrumental brilliance. In the fairy tale “The Nutcracker and the King of the Mice” written by the German Romantic E. T. A. Hoffmann and published in 1814, on which Tchaikovsky’s ballet is based, Christmas provides the realistic setting for a fantastic plot. Fiction and reality are woven together by means of strange and wondrous occurrences to produce a fascinating and unfathomable labyrinth. Both Hoffmann and Tchaikovsky, who began to compose the ballet in his fiftieth year, could identify with the literary figure of the watchmaker Drosselmeier, who gives order to his life through his work. In 1999, exactly 107 years – to the day – after the first performance in St. Petersburg, Patrice Bart’s choreography of Tchaikovsky’s worldwide success The Nutcracker was premiered at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin. Bart placed a prologue before the ballet in which Marie is abducted as a child and in which everything is placed in a modern context.

When Canadian opera director Robert Carsen produced his intense and cogent staging of Francis Poulenc’s compelling opera Les Dialogues des Carmélites at the Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam in 2001, it impressed audiences and critics alike, and also gained the interest of Riccardo Muti, then musical director of La Scala in Milan. He arranged for the production to be staged by the famous Milanese opera company. Muti himself conducted Orchestra and Chorus of the Scala and a superb, handpicked cast of singers. German soprano Dagmar Schellenberger, who received much critical acclaim for this, her debut at La Scala, takes the role of the young aristocrat Blanche who, during the French Revolution, seeks salvation from her terror in a convent. The action takes place in Paris and Compiègne between 1789 and 1794 and highlights the impacts of the Revolution and later Robespierre’s Reign of Terror on religious institutions. Following a decree dissolving all the country’s religious houses, the Carmelite nuns take a vow of martyrdom and sing their way to the scaffold. The last to die is Blanche, together with Soeur Constance, her close friend in the convent, sung by the American soprano Laura Aikin. American mezzo Barbara Dever gave her debut at La Scala in this production in the role of the assistant prioress Mother Marie. The production was particularly notable for the participation of Anja Silja as Madame de Croissy, and this recording allows us to experience one of the greatest singing actresses of our times.
