Strange Fish opens with a semi-naked woman hanging Christ-like from a cross, singing. The piece ends with a similar scene, in which the woman lies crumpled on her stomach on the hard, dusty ground – shaken down from the cross by the protagonist (Wendy Houston), who having searched for a man to love is instead visited by nightmarish, biblical plagues. Enter Achilles is set in a pub, a place where men meet to drink, sing karaoke and carry out their male rituals, and ends the following morning with a view of the club from the outside. Lloyd Newson’s psychodramas unfold in enclosed spaces such as these. In Dead Dreams of Monochrome Men a bare and unfurnished set, structured using light and shade, a wall, an opening, a bathtub; the hotel in Strange Fish – empty, dusty and abandoned; or the old-world comfort and traditional authenticity of the pub in Enter Achilles. The characters that occupy these spaces react savagely, longing desperately for human company, tenderness and recognition.

Das Stück endet mit einer ähnlichen Szene, in deren Verlauf die Frau bäuchlings auf dem harten, staubigen Boden liegt – heruntergeschüttelt von der Protagonistin (Wendy Houston), die den Mann zum Lieben sucht und statt dessen von alptraumhaften, biblischen Plagen heimgesucht wird. Nigel Charnock hält einen seiner fiebrig-manischen Monologe, mit dem er die anwesenden Paare belästigt und so verhindert, was sein grösster Wunsch ist: „It’s nice if you can find somebody special, somebody who is special in your live. (…) because there’s no need to be alone.“ Die Szene steigert sich in ein hysterisches Delirium, in dem alle Partygäste in ein hektisches Einander-Anspringen und Herumrennen verfallen, bis sie vom umtriebigen Charnock vertrieben werden. So, wie er die Party sprengt, platzt später auch eine Frau in die intime Zweisamkeit eines Paares, bringt ihren Körper als handfesten Widerstand in den reibungslosen Ablauf erprobter Paar-Choreographie. Die kann allerdings auch zum Selbstläufer werden, wenn sich der Auserwählte auf dem Bett so in automatenhafte, narzisstische Rage steigert, dass er überhaupt nicht merkt, wie seine Partnerin unter ihm weg gleitet und sich entfernt. Witzige, komische Szenen lockern die düstere Atmosphäre auf. Trotzdem scheinen die Darsteller nicht zu vergessen, dass der Boden, auf dem hier alle agieren, morsch ist. Tatsächlich droht darunter das Wasser. Kieselsteine fallen von der Decke. Die herkömmliche Ordnung löst sich auf. Dead Dreams of Monochrome Men: „If it sounds shocking, it is“; schrieb der englische Guardian über Dead Dreams of Monochrome Men. Im blau-grauen Licht geschlossener Räume ist ein halbnackter Mann in eine Badewanne bugsiert worden, ein anderer baumelt kopfüber von der Decke, ein dritter liegt seltsam verkrümmt auf dem Boden. Der vierte Mann hat sie alle auf dem Gewissen. Das hört sich nicht nur schockierend an, es ist schockierend, was in diesem Stück von Lloyd Newson an Gewaltexzessen im Homosexuellen-Milieu vorgeführt wird. Wo das Splatter-Movie mit den bekannten blutrünstigen Tricks arbeitet, greift der australische Choreograph in dieser Inszenierung zu waghalsigen Bewegungsaktionen und reduzierten, aber drastischen Bildern. Im Mittelpunkt der Produktion steht der Londoner Serienmörder Dennis Nilson, der Ende der 1970er Jahre eine Reihe junger Männer getötet hat. Dead Dreams of Monochrome Men entstand 1988 als Bühnenstück, ein Jahr später wurde es für den Film bearbeitet, und zählt somit zu den frühen Werken der 1986 gegründeten...
