Berühmte Arien von VERDI, DONIZETTI, ROSSINI, BELLINI, PUCCINI, WAGNER, PONCHIELLI, MASCAGNI, CILÈA, MASSENET, DEBUSSY Aufgezeichnet im August 1988 in der Arena di Verona, anlässlich des 75jährigen Jubiläums der dort jährlich stattfindenden Opernfestspiele, gehört dieses Galakonzert zu den herausragendsten Konzertereignissen der letzten Jahrzehnte. Die musikalische Resonanz war spontan, vielfältig und international. Den weitaus nachhaltigsten Erfolg verzeichnete die „Misa Criolla“; die Ariel Ramirez bereits 1963 konzipiert hatte und die seit ihrer Uraufführung in Buenos Aires in aller Welt populär geworden ist. Auf höchst individuelle Weise fliessen hier musikalische Inspiration, handwerkliche Meisterschaft, tiefreligiöser Geist und profundes Wissen um authentische südamerikanische Folklore zusammen, verbinden sich zu einem Werk, das zugleich Volksmusik und Kunstmusik ist. Das Ganze ist zu einem musikalischen Amalgam verschmolzen, das so in der mitteleuropäischen Musiktradition kaum denkbar wäre. Umso überraschender, dass die „Misa Criolla“ auch ausserhalb von Südamerika zum Erfolgsstück geworden ist. Am 21. Juni 1990, zwei Jahre nach Carreras’ sensationellem und weltweit bejubeltem Comeback auf Opernbühne und Konzertpodium, war er als Tenorsolist der „Misa Criolla“ zu erleben in der im 18. Jahrhundert vom spanischen Pater Serra gegründeten Mission Dolores in San Francisco. Beide Male war der Komponist Ariel Ramirez selbst am Klavier bzw. an der Orgel an den Aufführungen beteiligt. Gleichsam als musikalische Einleitung der Aufführung von Ramirez’ „Misa Criolla“ vorangestellt sind vier Lieder süd-, mittelamerikanischer und spanischer Komponisten, bei denen José Carreras vom italienischen Pianisten Lorenzo Bavaj begleitet wird. Famous ballads, arias and duets from VERDI, PUCCINI, ROSSINI, VIVALDI, BELLINI, SCARLATTI, LARA, STRADELLA, TOSTI A mere three weeks after his much-acclaimed return to operatic and concert performance at the Salzburg Festival in August 1989, José Carreras appeared in another important musical event – a joint concert with his Spanish compatriot, singer Montserrat Caballé, held in Moscow’s famous Bolshoi Theatre. For this concert, the two singers put together a programme that was extremely colourful and varied and at the same time tasteful and well-balanced. The concert opens with a medley of baroque and belcanto gems from the 17th and 18th centuries, including a rendition by José Carreras of arie antiche by Alessandro Scarlatti. Italian and Spanish songs form a central element in the programme for this concert, including three canzoni by Francesco Paolo Tosti and one by Salvatore Cardillo, which are favourites from Carreras’ concert repertoire. These popular Italian songs are matched by several Spanish canciones popolares, sung by Montserrat Caballé. Last but not least, José Carreras and Montserrat Caballé could not be expected to neglected opera - even though it is a genre that is not central to this particular programme. It is represented by “Brindisi”; Violetta and Alfred’s champagne-fuelled drinking song from Act I of Verdi’s La Traviata, and Lauretta’s enchanting aria from Puccini’s one-act opera Gianni Schicchi.

Just one year after his successful and highly acclaimed comeback at the Vienna State Opera he returned to the same opera stage where he made his brilliant debut in 197, as a thirty-year-old: the Grosses Festspielhaus in Salzburg. This recital was staged a second time and was also relayed live to a giant screen at the city’s Domplatz – a clear indication of the enormous affection with which he was received by the Salzburg public. The Spanish tenor repays such lively interest with an exclusive programme that includes no less than 23 songs and five encores. Whereas the first half of the evening was divided into three parts – works from the Italian baroque, French mélodies by Jules Massenet and canzoni by Francesco Paolo Tosti, the second half consisted entirely of Spanish works and focused principally on the songs of Manuel de Falla. And if not the final encore of the evening, certainly its crowning moment is the song we have come to associate with José Carreras as his vocal trademark – Granada by Agustìn Lara.

Set to Haydn’s Symphony No.101 (The Clock) and Symphony No. 73 (The Chase), it is an affectionate send-up of classical ballet poses and is performed with great wit and style by the Nederlands Dans Theater. STAMPING GROUND Stamping Ground is a unique and original ballet, inspired by Kylián’s experience of Aboriginal culture and dance, which led him to seek out the universal qualities that underlie both modern ballet and a style of dancing that has survived in Australia for over 40,000 years. Stamping is the most important element in Aboriginal dance. Each tribe has its own way of dancing and his own Stamping Ground. In his ballet, Kylián allows the dancers to develop their individual personalities and relationships with each other within the dance group through the idiom of the choreography.

Von Händels fünfter Oper „Teseo“ liess sich das Festspielpublikum 2004 zu wahren Beifallsstürmen hinreissen. Unter der musikalischen Leitung Wolfgang Katschners machte die Lautten Compagney mit einem Staraufgebot an Sängern die fünfaktige Zauberoper um den Amoklauf einer in ihrer Eitelkeit gekränkten, eifersüchtigen Zauberin Medea zu einem wahren Spektakel des barocken Gesangs. Beschwingt von dem Erfolg der Oper “Giulio Cesare“ komponierte Georg Friedrich Händel „Tamerlano“ innerhalb von drei Juli-Wochen des Jahres 1724. Die hier auf DVD vorliegende Gemeinschaftsproduktion der Händel-Festspiele, des Goethe-Theaters Bad Lauchstädt, des Theâtre des Champs-Elysées Paris und des Sadlers Wells Theatre London mit dem English Concert unter der Leitung von Trevor Pinnock aus dem Jahr 2001 ist die erste Inszenierung des “Tamerlano“ im Goethe-Theater Bad Lauchstädt. Die Dokumentation „Barockstar“ erzählt Georg Friedrich Händels Reise als Komponist durch das barocke Europa. Stars und Spezialisten der Barockmusik, darunter Christopher Hogwood, Alan Curtis, Trevor Pinnock, Sandrine Piau und Christine Schäfer und Nachkommen seiner Freunde und Förderer kommen darin zu Wort."
