Hier sind alle Werke Kurtágs für Ensemble sowie für Ensemble und Chor versammelt. Die präzisen Darbietungen legen von der intensiven Vorbereitungsarbeit des Ensemble Asko Schönberg Zeugnis ab. Dirigent Reinbert de Leeuw weist darauf hin, man habe "Kurtágs Oeuvre Schritt für Schritt studiert und diese Stücke über einen Zeitraum von zwanzig Jahren wieder und wieder aufgeführt." De Leeuw beriet sich intensiv mit György und Márta Kurtág vor und nach jeder Aufnahmesitzung. "Es gab Momente, in denen ich schon beim ersten Hören überwältigt war", sagt Kurtág, "und wo wir das Resultat sofort annehmen konnten. Aber mitunter hatten wir Kritik. Dass Reinbert stets auf unsere Anmerkungen hörte und Fragmente oder gar ganze Stücke nochmals einspielte, macht diese Veröffentlichung authentisch.". Das Booklet enthält alle Liedtexte mit Übersetzungen, ein Interview mit Reinbert de Leeuw, Begleittexte von Wolfgang Sandner und Paul Griffiths sowie eine Anmerkung von György Kurtag.

Michel Claude hat sich auf die Suche begeben und ist fündig geworden. Paul Wranitzky was born in the same year as Mozart, 1756, and died a year before Haydn, 1809. As a leading figure in the musical life of Vienna he knew both of them and featured in Beethoven's career too. Born in Moravia Wranitzky's early education seemed to anticipate a career in the church, but his abilities as a violinist and fledgling composer gradually began to move the focus of his life towards becoming a freelance musician in Vienna. The three trios on this disc were composed in the later 1780s and early 1790s just as Wranitzky was beginning to establish himself as a major figure in Vienna's music life. His easy mastery of the medium in terms of a balanced and continually varying sonority is evident in all three works. The sound is a rich one and all three players contribute to the dialogue, exchanging material informally as in the first movements of Op.17 No.1 or taking it in turn as in the variations that open Op.3 No.1. Ensenble Cordia have specialised in historically informed, stylish performances of the music of this period, unearthing much neglected but lovely music in the process. Their previous disc on Brilliant Classics was of chamber music by Paul Wranitzky's brother Anton, and it won critical success. Other information: - World premiere recordings, made in 2010. - Includes booklet notes by the Beethoven scholar David Wyn Jones. - Wranitzky was an influential musician (composer, violinist) in Vienna, an acquaintance of Beethoven, a fellow Freemason Lodge-member of Mozart, and composer for the Imperial Court and the Esterhazy court in Hungary. - The string trios, are composed in the Viennese classical style, full of spirit, invention and a some very personal touches. - Performed on period instruments by the Ensemble Cordia, which received some excellent reviews for their earlier issues on Brilliant Classics: Telemann Sonatas & Concertos (BC 94208) and Anton Wranitzky Chamber Music (BC 94168).

For many Mozart is more 'perfector' than 'innovator', a composer who drew on an already extant vocabulary to create some of the greatest works in European culture. In this recording, however, we are introduced to Mozart the 'trailblazer': the first composer in history to take wind instruments seriously. Whereas his colleagues were inclined to employ the so-called Harmonie merely to reinforce the general sonority, Mozart took it upon himself to exploit the character of each of these instruments, endowing them with a much more individualistic, distinctive role - as soloists, in the orchestra or in chamber music, the subject of this engaging release. Such writing is evident in the Quartet for oboe and strings, a work of wide leaps and brilliant passages that was composed for the Mannheim virtuoso Friedrich Ramm, and the Flute Quartet in D - written for the highly accomplished amateur musician Ferdinand Dejean and in which the principal voice, equipped with pearling runs in the first movement, is treated with great care, displaying nothing of the composer's supposed aversion to the instrument. Both works are milestones of their respective genres, and they are joined on this recording by three pieces originally composed for mechanical organ (and arranged for this recording by flautist Markus Brönnimann), originally commissioned by Count Deym to be used as accompaniment for a newly erected mausoleum in Vienna. Among these, the Fantasia in F minor K608 stands out as the most intense and dramatic, combining rigorous harmonic invention with memorable melody, polyphonic complexity and compositional virtuosity. Brönnimann's suggestion as to a possible comparison with the works of the American-born composer Conlon Nancarrow, as mentioned in the booklet note, reveals just how forwardthinking this music was for its time. At hand to perform these works is Ensemble Pyramide, a group whose diverse repertoire ranges from Baroque to 21st century and whose recital programmes are often based around the juxtaposition between new and old. Based in Zurich and awarded the city's cultural stipend 'Werkjahr für Interpretation' in 2006, its recordings for radio and on CD (which take in labels such as Naxos and Ars Musici) are complemented by an active recording schedule throughout Europe. Other information: - Recorded in 2013 in Switzerland. - At the centre of this new recording are beautiful arrangements for wind ensemble of three works written originally for mechanical organ, works of surprising dramatic and emotional character, two of which are in the dark and tragic key of F minor. Eislermaterial ist eine Hommage des Komponisten Heiner Goebbels an Hanns Eisler, der in Goebbels' künstlerischer und politischer Biografie eine grosse Rolle gespielt hat: Schon Eisler selbst stand als Schönberg-Schüler und gleichzeitig linkspolitisch engagierter Agitprop-Komponist im scharfen Spannungsfeld zwischen bourgeoiser Kunst- und klassenkämpferisch funktionalisierter Gebrauchsmusik; in ähnlicher Weise scheint sich auch Goebbels, der nicht nur Musik, sondern auch Soziologie studiert hat, hinsichtlich seiner Entscheidung für den Musikerberuf zwischen den Extremen orientiert zu haben. Im Zentrum des Eislermaterials stehen einige Lieder von Hanns Eisler, die Goebbels für die Ausführung durch das Ensemble Modern praktisch nur eingerichtet oder arrangiert hat. Gesungen werden sie von dem Schauspieler Josef Bierbichler. Im Eislermaterial ergeben sich vielerorts auch komische Effekte, die mit der Ernsthaftigkeit und Radikalität vieler Aussagen in den Interview- und Liedertexten kontrastieren. Dies sorgt nicht nur für ein kurzweiliges Hörerlebnis, sondern trägt auch zu Goebbels' Absicht bei, die Musik Eislers einerseits durchaus konkret, andererseits gleichzeitig auch mit der für heutige Rezipienten angebrachten Distanz in Erscheinung treten zu lassen. --Michael Wersin
