Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) stammt aus einer angesehenen Musikerfamilie in Bonn. Der talentierte Junge wird Meisterschüler des Hoforganisten Christian Gottlob Neefe und vertritt ihn bereits im Alter von 11 Jahren an der Orgel. Bereits 1783 spielt er als Bratschist im kurfürstlichen Orchester und seine ersten drei Klaviersonaten werden verlegt. Neefe lobt seinen Schüler im "Magazin der Musik" als zweiten Mozart. Beethoven reist nach Wien, um Kompositionsschüler bei Mozart zu werden, Mozart empfängt ihn jedoch nicht. Joseph Haydn, bei dem er vorspielt, bestärkt Beethoven darin, 1792 erneut nach Wien zu reisen. Der 22-Jährige findet in Wien schnell Bewunderer und Gönner wie Graf Ferdinand von Waldstein, Franz von Brunswik, Fürst Franz von Lobkowitz und Fürst Karl Lichnowsky, dem Beethoven seine drei als Opus 1 erschienenen Klaviertrios widmet. Beethoven soll fortan die "Wiener Klassik" prägen. Aber Wien wird auch die Stadt sein, in der er Frauen hoffnungslose Anträge macht und Ablehnung erfährt. Ab 1795 erkrankt Beethoven an Schwerhörigkeit, er wird zunehmend zum Einzelgänger. 1802 verfasst er als Brief sein "Heiligenstädter Testament", ein bewegendes Zeugnis der Ohnmacht des 31-jährigen gegenüber seiner gesundheitlichen und psychischen Verfassung. Unterhaltungen sind fortan nur noch schriftlich per Konversationsheft möglich. Ab 1808 leidet das Genie unter so starker Schwerhörigkeit, dass Beethoven keine Konzerte mehr gibt. 1819 wird er völlig taub, dennoch komponiert er unablässig weiter. Er stirbt 1827 mit 56 Jahren zurückgezogen in Wien, tausende Musikfreunde nehmen Abschied. Der musikalische Erneuerer Beethoven hinterlässt ein umfangreiches Werk, unter anderem neun Symphonien, fünf Klavierkonzerte, 16 Streichquartette, 32 Klaviersonaten sowie die Oper "Fidelio", welche im Amor Verlag als Hörspiel erschienen ist. Das Hörbuch liest der erfahrene Sprecher René Wagner mit gewohnt angenehmer Stimme.

Variation form occupied Beethoven throughout his composing career. This first volume of G. Henle Publishers’ two-volume edition of all his piano variations includes works from Beethoven’s time in Bonn as well as his early years in Vienna, composed between 1783 and 1799. Beethoven mostly took his themes from arias or songs from stage works that were popular at the time. Besides offering simple figurations around the melodic lines, he also made more radical variations of his chosen material, pointing the way forward to his future “character variations”. For decades, the two-volume Henle Urtext edition of Beethoven’s piano sonatas has maintained its status across the globe as the standard edition of reference among pianists. After its publication at the beginning of the 1950s, edited by the Munich musicologist Bertha Antonia Wallner – with the support of the Beethoven Archive in Bonn – this outstanding editorial achievement was quickly recognised by the world of pianists as a new benchmark. Its decades-long, rigorous field testing led to improvements and refinements such that this Henle Urtext edition of Beethoven’s piano sonatas is universally regarded today as the reference source. The printed fingerings provided by the pianist and important musical pedagogue Conrad Hansen are regarded as meaningful suggestions for solving technical and musical problems: “as few fingerings as possible, albeit instructive ones” (Hansen). G. Henle Publishers also offers the Beethoven sonatas in an alternative Urtext print edition without any fingerings (HN 1032 and HN 1034), as well as a pocket score in our study score series (HN 9032 and HN 9034) And interested parties may also find the sonatas in the digital version in the “Henle Library” app, here in conjunction with a variety of subjective, selectable fingerings by the likes of Eugen d’Albert; Claudio Arrau, Conrad Hansen and Artur Schnabel. Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas unfurl before us a virtually inexhaustible wealth of pianistic and musical flights of fancy, predominantly works of the greatest familiarity in piano lessons, concert halls, and recordings. Hans von Bülow emphasised the importance and significance of Beethoven’s piano sonatas with his bon mot that they constituted the “New Testament of music.” The 32 sonatas with opus numbers are a conscious choice; the three “Electoral” Sonatas by the thirteen-year-old boy, WoO 47, are not included in the “New Testament.” These are available from Henle in a separate Urtext edition (HN 255). Both of these works for two oboes and cor anglais, which Beethoven composed in the 1790s, belong to the lighter genre of serenades and divertimentos. He might have written them in response to a commission or have been inspired by the prevailing popularity of this delicate combination of instruments. Beethoven’s three Piano sonatas op. 2 were the first works in this genre to which he gave an opus number, thus signalling to the music world the special importance that he assigned to them. The model for the work was provided by the legend around the tragic fate of the Ancient Roman hero Coriolanus. Beethoven was referring to the very popular tragedy of the time with the same name by the Austrian writer Heinrich Joseph von Collin. Yet he only composed the overture in 1807, at a time when the play had long since been taken off the programme. Apparently it no longer mattered to the composer whether his music was played in conjunction with the play or not – and he thus wrote one of the earliest and to date best-loved concert overtures in musical history. The text of the Beethoven Complete edition was carefully reviewed for the study edition and there is a new preface.

The five string quartets in this volume are generally designated as Beethoven’s “middle quartets;” even though stylistically they do not all build a closed unit. More than three years lie between the inception of the three quartets op. 59 (1806) and the quartet op. 74 (1809/10). In the quartets op. 59, Beethoven sprinkled several Russian folksong themes – an homage to Prince Razumovsky, who had commissioned the works.This is why the pieces are often called the “Russian Quartets.” The next quartet, op. 74 in E flat major, was also given a nickname: thanks to extended pizzicato passages in the first movement, it is frequently called the “Harp Quartet”. The f minor Quartet op. 95, in turn, bears in the autograph title “Quartett serioso.” All five quartets are mature masterworks which demand high interpretative and technical mastery.

“My compositions are very profitable for me and I can say that I have more orders than are almost possible for me to fulfil.” Beethoven wrote the latter to a friend in 1801. He had only just completed his “Moonlight Sonata” op. 27 No. 2, when he began writing down the first sketches for his Sonata op. 28. Elements of pastoral music, such as the dance-like triple metre as well as pedal notes and fifths in the bass which seem to imitate bagpipes, are reminiscent of the later 6th Symphony. The rustic character gave rise to the work’s epithet “Sonate Pastorale”. Following a thorough revision, we are now presenting this sonata in an affordable single edition for the first time. The fingerings were provided by none other than Murray Perahia.
